Hi there, we are paying €12 for a 20kg bag Staffords polish coal. The coal is not great and really small. Any one know of better value around the Wicklow Town area? Can't help feeling ripped off for what I am getting. I think we paid around €8 last year for better quality.

Any one know the price of a bag of coal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭sxt

Check your local "coal merchant" for prices;) should be alot cheaper than what you would pay at petrol station anyways

http://www.goldenpages.ie/category_Coal+Merchants_Ireland-1.html and then search for your area

I am looking for specific prices. My point is that it is a huge difference of price within one year. Hence a possible rip off. The coal merchant price is cheaper but why should the general public have to pay over the odds in a petrol station. A small difference of price is acceptable.

I know that a petrol station in Belview, Waterford is selling 40kg bags for €17.95 which is actually cheaper than our local coal merchant.

    How can this be?

Mulligans oF Kilcock, Co. Kildare are selling large bags of coal for €8.

People from all over midlands etc going there to buy from him.

Just saw Rip Off Ireland forum. Maybe this should be moved to it as now I really feel we are being ripped off on coal prices from petrol stations.

40kg bag is €18 delivered, carried through the house and left in the garden, here in Sligo. Worth every cent.

In case it helps anyone else in future, just found out it's €19 for a 40kg bag of smokeless from Martin Brady in Dublin 9.

Wasn't sure how good that was, but now that I see the above prices I suppose I'm not paying way over the odds. Ok for a couple of bags as we've (just) run out, and it'll be delivered "next day"!

any idea how far he delivers to?

    Am in Dublin 15,

No idea brightkane, look him up on goldenpages and give him a shout. Just had mine delivered, it's a little "rough" (i.e. not smooth roundy shaped pieces like "posh" coal :) ) and turns out it was 19.50 a bag, but there's plenty of it, and I'll see what it burns like over the weekend.

Burn it now and report back!!!

I have found a huge difference over the years in some coal, some burn with loads of ash and very little heat, some burn red hot for hours on a bucket full!

Paying €15 for the same thing here in Limerick so maybe it isn't worth every cent ?

I work in a shop in Offaly, up to about 2 months ago a 25kg bag of texan coal used to be 8.50 and is now 10.50 a bag. The 40kg bags used to be 14.50 and are now gone up to 18.50. As a matter of interest how much are people paying for briquettes ?? We are selling them for 4.10 a bale.

I have always preferred Texan coal, tends to be quite "tarry" and joins together in a big lump in the grate and burns for ages with great heat! Although I'm sure it's carbon footprint is massive!

Select Stores in Dalkey is €19 for 40KG black diamond. I don't know of any other merchants locally here but it sure beats the 20KG bags at 11 or 12 quid each in the garages!

Excellent coal, seems to be a coal and briquette mix, burns long and very little ash and great heat from it.

Seems to be a lot of different coal varieties.. anybody want to point out which is best? Preferably with evidence instead of just opinion.

    Okgirl

Just wondered if you found out any more information about coal in Wicklow town?

I too buy the smaller bags in the local garages and they are incredibly expensive, and last for about 3 days.

I found a number of a coal merchant "Dunne and Sons" on golden pages, but cant see to get through as only a mobile number of provided.

Have you had any more luck?

I reckon you are talking about Michael Dunne & Son. Not abad choice. I used him for a long time and he is very accommodating. Always available if you are stuck. I do think he was slightly deerer as he delivers. Not sure though I think the delivery is worth it. We got a lot of coal delivered before Christmas in 40kg bags. I will get back on later with supplier and price. From what I remember it was a good price. Also looking to source a good supplier of wood for a wood burning stove. Anyone know of any trees down in Wicklow area?

Thanks a mill for the info, I called Dunne and Sons and he delivered that day, got 2 X big bags of coal for €19 each - brought into the shed and everything, really handy. The coal is really good, much better that the stuff was buying at the garage, and Mr. Dunne is really friendly - Will certainly be using him again.

As for wood, Kings across from the Beehive was highly recommended by a friend.

    Thanks again

Anyone know the cheapest place to buy coal in the Kilkenny area? I cut my pension contributions and am going to stockpile some coal instead as it should not depreciate as much as my pension has.
I want to buy it a ton at a time and I will collect.
    thanks

I know one think, bag of polish coal (40kg)cost in Poland €5.
Somebody making big money on it.
Is anybody would like make some bussines on it?
I bring it , you sell it:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Even if you were to fill up a Ford Transit with bags of coal, you'd only be able to fit 37.5 40kg (1.5tn) bags in before you'd be over the weight load, to compete with the guys above, you'd want to sell each bag for 15 quid, so you're making 10 euro off each bag, that's only €375 profit for a full van load but it would cost more than that in fuel to get to Poland from Ireland and back so you'd be losing money I'm afraid :o

truck rented from polish company €0.50/1km
    4000 km both way - 4000 x €0.50 = €2000
    coal cost 30 ton - €3000
other (space for keep coal, petrol for "transit" to deliver etc) - €1000
    all €6000

    30 tone 30 000 kg
    30 000 kg/40 kg = 750 bags
    750 bags x €15 each = €11 250

Now you can think how cost are changed when you have own truck.
I gave you a simple description, but belive me when you buy a space on ship for a 100tone or more, you will make a 30% savings on transport.
This is how some persons are doing in Sligo port.
Do you think it will be a hard to sell 50 bags a day for that price:)?
even if you go for 12 and sell for some local shops you can make a few euro.

    regards,
and sorry for language but as you know im only
    polish man

Ah, I thought you were only thinking of throwing a few bags in a van or a car if you were to drive home for Christmas instead of taking the plane, but with a truck it's a whole different story :)

You'd probably run into a load of legal crap though.
