I'm doing a presentation on education in Ireland and nearly have the final draft finished all I need is views of fellow students.

So, could a few people please post what they think about education in Ireland and how it could be improved???

It'd be a great help. Thanks!!!!

Computing should be a Leaving Cert subject. Almost every profession under the sun requires the use of computers in some form or another, whereas how many require Irish??

I think that admission to college should be based on an interview aswell as Leaving Certficate points.
Also I think there should be a built in work experience element in all 3rd level courses.

I think this sums up what I think of education at third-level in Ireland. I assume I can post this link since its a public site, the attitudes and comments of this lecturer I stumbled across are incredible. You almost feel like crying for him cause the bold students aren't interested in his classes....despite this hardship he does manage to cut class for a job interview and leave early when only a few students turn up...seriously its worth a read, we're all in the wrong careers!

the problem here is that people who would, for example, perform remarkably in a lab environment may not be very good at an interview. an interview scenario would allow for people to b*llsh*t their way into college. with the points system, you have to earn your place. of course, the points system does have to be reviewed. Why should someone doing a science subject need languages etc etc...but that discussion is for a different day...
Also I think there should be a built in work experience element in all 3rd level courses.

    yes, definitely.

Why?? Cos people who want to be Doctors or scientists have to be good at English, Irish, and let's not forget, a third language?? God forbid you'd end up on the operating table of a guy who didn't speak French and Irish!!

IT in all secondary schools and possibly computing as a LC subject.

I started an IT course in college in 2000, I'd never used MS Word or Excel, wasn't able to open or save documents. Hell, I never even used email until a few months into my course. :o

Seems mad to people on boards who are all able to use computers but I wasn't the only one in my course with zero knowledge.

You won't get away with that these days so make Computing a subject

I agree. Computing of some form has to be an LC subject - especially if Irish is. How many people use Irish in their jobs?? How many use computers??

Just out of curiosity - what IT course did you do??

Don't work in IT now but it's vital to have a basic understanding of computing

Can I ask you what you work in now?? Irrelevant to the discussion I know but I'm nosey...and wondering about the ould future in IT myself...

Realy unaceptable to have this gap missing in your education.

Completely agree. Especially as there is so much useless material in there.

Edit: imo every student leaving secondary school should try the ECDL. It's recognized and while it might be basic to many people on boards, don't forget many people lack confidence with computers. This is one way to get a basic understanding. Even if they don't go onto college you'll need this for many jobs, like a warehouse worker monitoring stock for example.

Hmmmm, I do think ECDL would be too basic as an exam subject. The Leaving Cert Higher Level papers have a high standard. ECDL would be very easy compared to the other higher level sciences. I think something more along the lines of what Computer System Organisation etc, some boolean and the likes, would be better...Perhaps ECDL as Junior Cert, and something more advanced for the Leaving??
