Its the dog's bollix for email, business and phone features and is exceptionally neat in hand and pocket. For me you cant beat a real qwerty keyboard. GPS/HSPDA/WIFI all included. I find it very usable and particularly like the web/wap browser which is very responsive. First symbian phone I have had also and I really like interface and ability to download apps etc.

Havent owned an iPhone but have used one and I must say I find this E71 much neater in hand and pocket. The screen on the iPhone is obvisouly bigger and better. The iPhone is better also for video and music. E71 has a radio and iPhone doesnt (I use radio alot on train)

The phone reception on the iPhone is notoriusly rubbish. E71 has top of the range antenna reception.

E71 is best phone I have ever had and my first time back with Nokia since 2000/1 (been SE since before the first colour phone T68i).

If you are more interested in email/business features than media then I suggest this is a better option

another option would be the blackberry storm which is out on friday, be warned tho..if you think the iphone tarrifs are expensive wait till u see the rip off plans vodafone expect to to pay for the storm and with no wifi i mite add...see here

    http://www.vodafone.ie/planscosts/paymonthly/access/.jsp

    50 quid for 100 mins and 100 txts with 3g infotainment(1 gig)

this makes the iphone plan look like great value!

E71...best ever ;) got one from vodafone and my lady's got an o2 one, and I feel like getting another one! It's really really really good!!!

I have an E71 and my wife has an iphone 3g. They are very different beasts. Firstly, I wouldn't, and my wife wouldn't call the iphone a business phone or even a smartphone. Its a consumer gadget and it does browsing and music very well.

The E71 is a business/email/connection handset that does everything very well. As other have said it is a great size and comes packed with so much.

Its really up to you and what you want to use it for. If its browsing and music and you really really want touch screen then stick with the iphone. If its multiple email accounts, podcasting, working disconnected (offline storage) and other stuff then the E71 is best.

The E71 is possibly the best business phone Nokia has ever made

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭strecker

Absolutely! And as I love to repeat: boygeniusreport.com reckon it's the best phone Nokia ever made :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,691 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

    +1

For the E71...does everthing you need a phone to do....iphone is a gadget (fad) it's not pratical....the E71 feels like quality and is a decent companion for any power phone user....wifi, sat nav, querty keyboard, big screen, easy in the pocket, great battery, i'm using a 3 one, very light firmware works well.....

I'd like to add sth that might be relevant for an iphone user:
Yes, the e71 is a business phone... And the boxed earphones aren't great for music (low volume, weak sound). BUT: I shelled out 25 euro for a pair of 2.5mm sennheisers, and wow: what an improvement! they really turn the e71 into a competent mp3 player. Not ear(th) shattering, but good enough to leave your ipod at home. It's actually my only nag re the 71: it's one of the best built devices I have ever used, and the bundled earphones/handsfree look/feel/sound cheap...fine for handsfree calls, but not good for anything else... So, if you like music on the go, I'd suggest adding anothe 20-30 euro to the price!

Where'd you buy the sennheisers? You got a link?
I lost my zen recently so I figure the e71 might as well take over as my music player, but you're right that those headphones that come with it are awful (and I think I've lost them anyway).

If you're going to get a new set of 'phones, just get a regular 3.5 mm set and an adaptor from Deal Extreme about a euro delivered.
    Can't link I'm afraid - posting on a phone.

    1) Well its fast, really fast. No lag in the menus, just really really fast.

    2) Battery life. Easy 2 days on a battery. I've gone to 2.5 days and thats with push mail (exchange) on from 7am to 12 midnight, browsing and some radio (yes it has an FM radio)

    3) mail, mail and mail. I am using exchange mail (2007) and Roadsync with full html emails and its just really really good. I also have google mail connecting to other imap and pop accounts.

    4) Most things can be done 1 handed. When you're in a rush and writing down notes at the same time its a must

    5) In a meeting (demo) yesterday my 02 mobile broadband failed. No prob - I just connected the pc to the phone and connected over its 3g. Was back online in about 3 minutes!

    6) applications! There are tons. I have the phone full of really useful apps that make the handset really useful.

    7) Small size. Its a perfect size for a business phone. Fits in the pocket and doesn't weigh a ton.

    I could go on but I won't.

I found using the adapter not so nice what with the input socket being on the side... also, the adaptor I used gave really bad sound through really good earphones :(

    right on
battery life's amazing. used 2hrs of web yesterday, my lady listened to 6 hours of audiobooks later on while checking the odd email... and meanwhile I tried joikuspot for my laptop for a good hour and a half, and the battery is still going strong!

I still dont see what makes it such a better phone than the iphone(the reason for this thread)

The battery perhaps being the only one i dont see the iphone being able to compete with

One of the biggest reasons for me would be the fact that you're no longer beholden to the whims of a technological tyrant.

All of the new e-series phones are fantastic, light-years ahead of the last generation. I've an e-51 myself (and a ipod touch), but plan on getting the e71 this month. The iPhone is a nice gadget but a pretty poor phone.

Well I never claimed it was great I was asking why those terms were bandied around, plus aren't some of the claims here that the e71 is the best business phone im not sure what type of business your in that a phone camera is needed surely if your business is photographic related you might want an actual dedicated camera not a phone with a camera function

But style is one factor to consider
and for viewing any form of video, iphone will win.
Surfing the net looks better on an iphone in landscape.

what makes it a pretty poor phone and the Iphone can be jailbroken which gives access to many other functions

Health Inspectors I work with have found camera phones to come in very handy from time to time. For others, it's just a nice extra like the radio.

And exactly how many codecs does the iPhone support? The big screen is an advantage, but i'd rather the option to install a browser of my choice- We'll see how the situation with Opera turns out.

It's totally different, and for what it does it's certainly one of the best! But let me check:...oh, gosh, you're right, it doesn't have a touchscreen! Nor does it have the steve-jobs kill-switch! :P

core player doesn't cost a thing, and plays every format video more or less. it serves as mass storage/plug'n'play on any pc... also serves as a very fast modem without asking stevie boy for permission... etc etc!

The iphone is a very nice feature/fashion phone, but it's so pointless to compare it to the e71 it's ludicrous; and copy/paste-absence means the iphone is pretty re-tarded as a business phone...

oh, why do I even bother? :p;):pac:

the op just wanted to know if it's good, not if its an iphonekiller

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭elderlemon

YOU asked what makes it a good business phone. Looking at videos, listening to music and browsing the net is not what people in business spend their time doing.

That said - I listen to music, podcasts and radio (oh sorry the iphone doesn't have one of those :-) ) and browse the net but mail, contacts, voice calls, maps are what I do day in day out.

Also forgot to mention - I have 8gb on the phone for local storage and its loaded with audio and video podcasts, word, excel and powerpoint presentations which I can listen to/view at any time (and edit, change, forward to others).

For business use its does exactly what it says on the tin and it does it well.

If you want a fashion accessory then get the iPhone, if you want a good email/ business phone then get an E71 and if you want a good camera then get a good camera. I can see that the iPhone looks good and has a big screen, but you cannot really use it for more than watching/ listening to stuff and making phone calls. For stuff that requires interaction, emails, browsing, sending texts (as opposed to sndng txts) etc you can't beat the E71.

Next you explain how you can multitask much better on an iphone cause it can't... Hahaha.

I never said it was better i never said it was the best in fact all I did was offer a side by side comparison with what people were saying the e71 does im sorry that you dont like my simple Iphone being compared to your truly great business phone, but you have yet to deny it can do any of the things i have said it can do.

The title of the thread is "Should I swap over to E71 from Iphone " so i think comparing the features of both is valid.

now time for justified use of

I never said you couldn't do those things on the iPhone, just that they are so much easier to do on the E71 with a keyboard.

Does actually seem like a slightly odd choice though to be trying to decide between the iPhone and E71 which I'd have expected to be aimed at totally different markets and uses. If someone is interested in an iPhone then what is it that is making them consider something so totally different like the E71 in the first place?

It's been on it's way for quite some time now. When do you think it will arrive? People have been clamouring for it since day one and what does the latest firmware update give us... Podcasts over the air  An App was on sale three months ago that offered that functionality before Apple removed it.

there is a learning curve to using to the touchscreen that isn't there with a qwerty keyboard, but yes they are aimed and marketed at two different markets but most of the features listed in this thread about the e71 the iphone can do.

There are a certain set of people who might need a dedicated smart phone with the ability to amend docs, spreadsheets from a phone if your not one of them then I dont see the major benefits to moving from an iphone to an e71.

Im not going to say either phone is better but to ditch a new phone for another phone so early in having one would be pretty pointless unless you really need something that one or the other can do.

e71 sounds great. but can you download interesting useful apps to it. In particular I was gonna buy an iphone mainly to use Karajan, an musical ear-training program. anything similar available for e71?

How does the Nokia E71 fair out with Google email accounts?

Do you have to use Nokia Email Service (http://email.nokia.com) or is its own native client sufficient?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

The Google Java app works on the E71 for GMail, or you can use the built in Symbian mail application as well. Don't neet to use the Nokia Email thingy.

I'd agree with this, an adaptor would just jut out the side loads which would be annoying. Thanks for the link strecker.

The only niggling issue that I have with it is if you have the wristband lanyard thing attached and you're carrying the phone in it's leather case, having the lanyard on the open corner means that the headphone socket is completely covered. This is less of a phone issue and more of a case issue, but it bugged me nonetheless.

I bought this adaptor of eBay and use it with my Seinheisser portable headphones and the quality is brilliant. You can also receive calls (just use the phone mic) which is great as there is no fiddling about.

oh, you can use the built in mic with any and all earphones or even when you connect your pc speakers! Maybe my adaptor was cr*p?

How does the Nokia E71 fair out with Google email accounts?

Do you have to use Nokia Email Service (http://email.nokia.com) or is its own native client sufficient?
built in client configured my gmail account in 30 secs ;)
but mind you: the gmail apps v2.0 is well improved on e71... a lot of new features. but I find the built in client a bit faster!

Ah you see I want push email. I use the Nokia Email Service currently on my N73.

The Google Java app is not push, but using the built in Symbian app works fine once you have changed the settings round in GMail itself. It does seem to keep disconnecting on me recently though since I put the Exchange mail on it as well though.
