Is it me or is every body getting a little tired of this Munster Rugby crack - and indeed their second cousind the Cork GAA teams.

It's this "Irish by Birth - Munster by the Grace of God" stuff that is just beginning to get up my nose - freekin superior or what ??

And this new stadium down in Limerick - the Holy Grail is not in it ! but at least it's not in Cork.

Now that the New Zealanders are coming we will have to endure endless crap about their famous 12 - nil victory back in ...whenever - an you know the All Blacks were lucky to get Nil - Haw haw freekin - HAW !

One fluke every century is possible in any sport.

Give it a rest an cut back on the elitism lads might be better in the long run.

Hope they are kicked out of this years comp. nice an early - an those uppity knobs are put in their place,

My money is on Toulouse - where they see rugby as a game and have none of the jingoistic tryumphalism so prevelent in Munster.

    ALLEZ Toulouse !!!

one of few Irish Sporting Teams that have being successful worldwide, and put them (the people) down. well its a damn sight better than listening to the leinster rugby shower (and no not the D4/D6 heads), its a small country of course many people who are not even rugby heads would join the bandwagon when success occurs. sure i wouldn't be surprised if bertie et all pretended to be munster men when the succeeded in the Euorpean Cup.

that grace of god thing, its tongue in check, a bit of a laugh, at least they are proud of where their from. its not their fault if others are intimidated by them.

Im sorry but what the hell are you on about. Im from Limerick and lived in Dublin for years. Rugby in Munster and perticularly Limerick is not seen as an elitist sport at all and is notting like it is in Dublin where I would consider it elitist because of the schools influence.

The New Zealand game was years ago but was a briliant acheavment as I believe no other team in the nothen hemisper had beeten that team at the time, but its not like that is the only achevement Munster have had now is it.

I was putting forward the point that the innate provinciallism of Munster and indeed Ireland leads them to excesses when they have a little bit of success.

How many Munster by birth players are there on the team anyways ?

To be fair the newspapers are somewhat to blame for fuelling the jingoism that is part an parcel of Munster Rugby - they are a moderately successful team aided by a good smattering of "outsiders" and admittedly an excellent coach.

I have no real gripe against the team per se -- it's the bandwaggon followers who are looking for the "greatest supporters in the world" tag now that our soccer team is in decline.

Probably knobs very similiar to you Agamemnon who probably never go to a club Rugby game ...

*wipes away tears of laughter* What a splendid rant, but next time perhaps focus your energies on spelling (or was "tryumphalism a failed pun?) and on finding a subject you actually know more about than "Aw, my team don't win, stupid Munster fans". Because if there's one thing Munster rugby isn't, especially in Limerick, it's elitist.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

You're being very harsh. Ireland is still quite hompphobic, and egg ball provides a much-needed and useful homoerotic outlet for lots of middle-class chaps. Where else can they 'play rough' with each other, lie on top of other chaps, and grab each other's testicles in public?

I've been to plenty of my local club's rugby games - my father played for them and my brother-in-law still does.

You get bandwagon supporters following every successful team in every sport in every country in the world; it's certainly not exclusive to Munster. You see, Fulton, Ireland is a small country with a small population and of course we're going to be delighted when our teams succeed against the great teams from bigger nations. Your own ill-informed whingeing reveals another trait still all too common in Irish sport: begrudgery.

Just interested in how you define Moderately successful? Winning the Heineken Cup twice is not moderately successful in my book, Nilling the All Blacks is also a feat in itself. not to mention the celtic league victory back in 03.
They punch far above their weight.

Munster are a great side and a genuine team of the people. I went to school with a member of the present team. As sound then as he is now. They are all any i have met are sound. Supporters are sound. Atmosphere is always brilliant at matches. (Bar Montauban) Ireland matches are usually ****e in comparison. I think thats where the Irish by Birth thing comes from.

Irish sides have a huge advantage in the Heineken Cup as the play as provinces against club sides.

They also have less domestic competition, furthermore they are comercially very well run enabling them to attract top class southern hemisphere players with huge contracts.

It's a bandwagon for middle class knobs.

    Great achievement my arse.

I work at Rugby matches doing a job which means I interact with alot of customers.

I have to say, Some of the biggest CNUTS on this planet are Munster Rugby supporters!!!! I hate them, and this is no small percentage. this is 20% that I come across are absolute pricks for no reason.

Also some of them seem to have a slight retardation when it comes to the new ticket box in Thomond.

DO NOT JAB THE TICKET IN!!!!

Slide it in at the bottom of the curved bit. OK?
Listen for a click and look at the screen, OK?
Is the screen GREEN? OK then WALK. DO NOT HANG AROUND, YOU ARE NOT FUNNY. I don't want to have to ready your ticket again for entry!!!

I presume there are some dreadful cnuts among Leinster rugby fans too.

I'm no fan of rugby but it's apparently a working class sport in Limerick. The middle-class/upper middle-class thing is associated with Dublin and Cork's private schools.
that grace of god thing, its tongue in check, a bit of a laugh
Yes indeed. Ditto "the People's Republic of Cork" thing. It amuses me the way people take such offence to that.
When I was living in Dublin, it was Dubliners who made the huge deal of me being from Cork, certainly not me. In fact I never even thought about it (I'm not interested in that "proud of where you're from" bollocks) until after I moved to Dublin.

One thing I find funny about Limerick people (from the masses of experience I had in the 36 hours there) was how so many said they weren't into foreign games-but of course support Munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I'm not a rugby fan much but I have to say the sport looks far more attractive in Limerick than it does in Dublin. My grandfather's from Limerick, he's a working man and has supported rugby all his life, it's genuinely an everyman game there. Plus has anyone seen the new Thomond park? It looks amazing. Fair play to Limerick and to Munster rugby, from a non-rugby fan who's not from Limerick :)

Are you actually saying something is more attractive because a higher percentage of working class people play it? What is this? Class discrimination?

It doesn't matter what your income is you face the same challenges in a rugby match.

    *sigh*

Stereotyping provincial Irish rugby supporters is utterly retarded. It's reducing rugby to the level of football. People who don't or haven't played rugby shouldn't be allowed a public opinion.

Ironically the majority of people I've heard getting jingoistic about Munster, Leinster, etc. are fat, barrel bellied losers who wouldn't last 2 minutes on a rugby pitch. Go find a more suitable sport to destroy with your idiocy... table tennis, bowls or something.
