So who has been in it yet? Any opinions? What you like/dislike?

I went in about 8pm last night (opened at 10am) and it is huge. I also found things I didn't know that Tesco did including bikes and paint! Down at the alcohol/soft drinks ends they have created 'walls' of bottles that stretch to the ceiling (and the ceiling is very high).

On the plus side the covered parking will be a bonus for many people-get to and from the car without getting wet. There is now a bigger range of products covered. The clothes actually look good. I have to admit that I haven't bought clothes in a Tesco but some of their dresses/trousers/tops looked ok.

On the negative side I think the size may put some people off. I remember seeing posts from boardies saying that they would go to Celbridge or elsewhere when it opened. Also pedestrian access to the front door isn't very obvious. You now can't walk directly from the existing line of shops to Tesco-you have to go to the round about and even there the path doesn't take the most direct route so most pedestrians were crossing the carpark in the dark. Hopefully this will be rectified.

Was up there Monday (opening day) It was bigger alright and nice and bright but to be honest not much EXTRA there. Okay they have more DIY stuff more electrical stuff and some more clothes ( stilln ot great though) It would be great if they opened penneys there they wud make a fortune with all the students. I also heard River Island were opening. Atlantic is good though could do with a shop like that in the area.

I was working in it during construction, it's pretty big! Must be one of the biggest in the country. Lots of stock. Laughed when I saw the trolley parking lockers in the cafe, after a hard days shopping ya can park up the trolley and relax:D O ye, and the staff canteen is nicer/twice as big as the public cafe.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

Lets not be negative!! If anyone want to go to a tesco extra they'd have to go to Clare Hall or Clear Water. and never mind the students!!

These seem to be pretty standard kit for Tesco Extra. Saw both in the Extra nearest to me when I lived in the UK, and in another that I visited elsewhere.

Sorry Buff half the text speak was actually spelling errors looking back:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

'wud' is not a spelling error.

As for Tesco - won't be there, won't buy the t-shirt. Hate the original craphole - I'll hate the supersize version in a supersized hate manner.

M&S and Atlantic - good news. But I can pretty much guarantee I'll never be inside Tesco Extra. I'll go to M&S for whatever I'm looking for there and then back to SuperValu for my groceries.

Fruit and veg section is pretty bad. It's only one aisle and when I was there around 8 last night there were a lot of empty crates. Couldn't find some of what I was looking for. The old store seemed to have more space for it.

Also took a walk along the units that have been built so far for signs of any retailers - only one I saw was for River Island in Unit 25.

I too thought that the fruit and veg section was smaller than in the old store. I guess there are margins to be made.

The arrangement of soft drinks on the upper shelves was pretty cool.

And I was there after 10pm on Tuesday night (cue lots of rows when people could not buy their vodka), and was amazed at how many kids were in the place! When I was 10 years old, the only place I'd be at 10pm was in my bed. Still is some nights!

You do realise that most the stock given to celbridge is what is left over from Maynooth stock! They are not allowed to order their own stocks!

Atlantic homecare is definitely going into it alongside Mark & Spencers afaik

Anyone who did their weekly shop in "SuperValu" would have to be either a millionaire or like wasting vast amounts of money...not that Tesco isnt a lot dearer than the german shops in many cases .But at least Tesco seem to be more recession focussed with the Value Aisles and bargains at the end of every aisle than when they were trying to rival M&S with their Finest (sometimes inferior to the mainstream product!) range all over the place...

tesco extra in maynooth is massive..well similar to other extra stores
cafe is nothing special almost same as old one
but prices are bad in the cafe
they have removed irish breakfast menu pricing
looks like they increased the prices now for bfast.
very sad in the recession time

saw some offers in the stores for toys, cosmetics
    nothing new though for offers

I have been there a few times now and think its great. The clothes section is the biggest surprise, real value for money.

I think M&S, heatons and pennys may be wishful thinking, were they picked up from this artical ? if so, they might be a red herring.
    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/commercialproperty/2008/0220/1203371218057.html

the lady on one of the tills told me the only confirmed tennant was river island.

Great shopping experience, there is however the same amount of tills as the old shop, 23. this means bigger queues at peak time :(

Typical the year I leave Maynooth this happens, why didn't they build this a few years ago, lucky current students. Especially if Penneys go in there, cheap student heaven! Must have a look next time I'm out there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭whiteandlight

I live in Maynooth and shop in Tesco all the time. The new layout is infuriating me. When I pop in for a shop I don't want to have to walk through either the clothes/diy harware to get to the food, thats way to tempting to spend money on everything else (and yes I realise thats their point!)
I've got caught in queues on the four/five occasions I've been there. When it comes to fruit and vegetables there seems to be some serious problems with stocking but I'm hoping thats just teething problems with levels of stock. :confused:If not I'll have to change stores as I'm struggling with WW and there's no excuse like the shop didn't have any veg to throw me off my diet!
I've also been told that the only confirmed store is river island who apparently have been advertising for staff in Liffey Valley. There were tenders in from tons of other places (well rumours about them anyways) but nothing else has been finally confirmed as far as I've been told.:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭Karmaa

I was there last Saturday, it's huge it will take a while to get used to but I'm well pleased with it.
Oh and I have it on good authority there is nothing confirmed for M&S going in there. :(

Can't find anything in the food section.
Doesn't stock any wider a range of food/drink products, even stuff they stock in the North/border areas.

Give me the skanky old Quinnsworth in a converted Rover dealership we used to have any day....

Discusting Greedy Tesco... Horrible layout, make you walk past clothes etc before food, tescos way of trying to squeeze more purchases out of you,
not suitable for everday shopping because much bigger than normal so more walking.
cafe now privately owned, rubbish cafe with high price and low quality.. stay away..
I was a regular shopper in old tesco because closest to house but I'm now heading across town to Lidl and Dunnes, they probably dont care about the 5k yearly spend of one family though, hopefully more people take their shop somewhere else in town too... All shops try to steer you around to make more purchases but the blatent greed of tesco extra is infuriating, I'll never darken their door again.

Ohhh come on... I am no fan of Tescos but the layouts of these stores are very very carefully planned. They come from years of experience / reseach . Of course they are trying to extract every last cent they can from you. Everything about the store is designed to do that , from the decor to the music ( although some people hate that ). Every product is carefully placed to ensure max sales. They have hundreds of specialist marketing people working full time on the layouts.

It's the same in every supermarket , and Tescos are about the best at it. Dunnes/Superquinn could learn a lot from them

However saying that , I have noticed that Tescos in Ireland are very poor on their fresh produce , it's often poor, often lines are not available. Also I have noticed that even in the bigger stores such as the new Maynooth the choice is poor often they just have more of the same stock on the shelf..

The new store in Maynooth is no execption to this , very disappointing on the fresh food , and poor choice considering the size of the store.

I remember about 2 years ago I wrote to Tescos complaining about the fresh produce , and the lack of it. All they did was pass the letter to the store concerned ( who no doubt put it in the round file ) , after all it's down to the supply chain .

At least some of Tescos stuff comes from Ireland, M&S everything incl the sandwiches comes over on the ferry ! Although why I have to buy cabbages from Spain really confuses me ( even in season ).

Not hundreds, there would be around 50 working in the section planning dept, I have worked alongside these people. They send layouts to the stores depending on sales figures etc it is up to the stores to display the goods with these layouts.

Incorrect not everything comes over on the ferry M&S also sell Irish origin maybe not as much as other retailers.:)

In all fairness. . . tesco Maynooth take in €1m+ a week so I doubt they are gonna miss one shopper who will most likely. . eventually. . . end up going back! ;) plus with the better selection. . . they will take in more than they were! so maybe €1.1m+

Yep, I saw these drawings stuck on all the shelves while they were stocking up towards the end of construction. Telling the staff exactly what brand to put where on each shelf.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

And what you don't know is that the maker/distributor of those products spend hours in ' smoke filled rooms' hammering out the deal that ensures their product gets pride of place. Believe me only the suppliers who sell at the right price get their product placed to sell .... ( or grease the right palms possibly .....)

This is why you will often find the goods you actually want tucked out of sight.

In the case of the supermarkets they are now so large that you get the ' tail wagging the dog ' with the supermarket dictating the price, level of supply , special offers etc etc . Of course the savings they make are mostly to ensure their margins are good , not to cut the price to consumer, it seems this is even more so in Ireland as compared to the UK

I'm picturing Fathers Ted and Dougal coming up with 'My Lovely Horse':D

There was a good documentary on TV3 about the shops buying power.

I heard Boots were meant to be coming in as well, but that none of the tennants could move in until after Christmas as Tesco wanted the Christmas shoppers for themselves!:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭MintyDoris

I was there last week and I was impressed.
Of course they are a business and they are here to make money but so are all the others supermarkets at the end of the day
I was impressed with some of the staff in there and I know that there was long hard hours put in on the weeks before opening day
The position of products on the shelves is a very exact science but again, this happens in every supermarket and has done for years. Tesco are definately not the only ones who work this way

It took me about two hours to get my grocery shopping done the first day I was in there, not the best for walking around in after a day in college, very easy to get lost. The clothes and stationary are better than before though.
