not only is switzerland a pain in the ass for the eu right in the middle of the eu but still not a member, they have one of the highest private gun ownership rates in the world maybe the republican neo cons are planing to use switzerland as a base to attack the eu. i think the eu shouldnt take a chance and just get rid of the switzerland problem

I think the EU could defend themselves pretty well against, if I'm reading your post right which is an impressive achievement in itself if I may say so myself, a rag tag collection of untrained civilians and their private weaponry. I'm no expert but a country of 7,500,000+ people probably wouldn't be able to overthrow a continent.

Because, you know, no other country ever thought of invading someone else. EVER.

invade switzerland :D why do you think hitler never thought of that when he was steamrolling across europe

every citizen armed with weapons, enough fully stocked deep underground bunkers to house every swiss man, woman and child meaning nuking them would be pointless, High mountains on 3 sides making access into the country virtually impossible by foot or land vehicle

The only reason anyone would invade Switzerland would be to withdraw some of their illgotten gains from the bank!

Before WWI a German and Swiss general were chatting at a dinner. Making professional conversation, the German asked in the hypothetical case that their million-man army were to invade Switzerland, what would the swiss 500,000 man army do?

The Swiss general replied "Shoot twice, then go home"

    NTM

And because the high-ranking Nazis needed somewhere to secrete their ill-gotten loot!

But yes, Switzerland wouldn't be the easiest country to invade.

And OP, why is Switzerland a pain in the ass for the EU outside their borders?

They would be a much bigger pain in the rear inside!

You think EU bureaucracy is a pain now? Just let the Swiss at it, and look forward to a Europe-wide ban on flushing the loo between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., just to start ...

I have met a fair few Swiss, and liked them for the decent, well-meaning people that they generally are, but God, I doubt you could find a more anal-retentive (pun intended!) lot anywhere!

The people with guns are given them after their military service.

Given that Switzerland has the world's highest number of millionaires per capita, I thing we should invade them. We badly need the money.:D

Exactly they are highly trained and issued with 7.5mm Stgw 57 and 5.6 mm Stgw 90 assault rifles; 9 mm model 49 and 75 pistols.

The 57 is what they can take home after finished their service(along with the pistols):

although it is converted to semi-automatic single-shot rifle before being handed over

While serving they can have the 90 at home for rapid mobilisation:

They're not big on buying, they mostly rent the owner occupier rate is ~35% which is relatively low

I thought the Swiss army was supposed to be far and away the best in Europe, which was the whole world at the time, but somehow some agreement was reach so that they would stop kicking every other armys ass. This resulted in them having to wear a daft uniform so that the rest of us could see them coming and then they had to guard the bloke with the imaginary freind in Rome and never get involved in any wars again.

    Or something like that.

We issue everyone in Ireland with a firearm so that when the rest of Europe invades us when we revote no on the Lisbon, we can defend ourselves, or at the very lest, shoot some Frenchies.

    That's the only sensible option.
Hopefully the IRA can train us well in the weeks leading up to the invasion :pac:!

I think we should invade Switzerland, claim they have terrible weapons hidden, take over the chocolate industry and give it to a private company with strong connections to our government officials and finally put a puppet regime in place.
Then start making snide remarks about Austria and threaten to invade them too.
    Wow, deja vu...

Thw Swiss have only been under foriegn control once, by Napolean.
They were invaded a few times. They once conter-invaded Italy then sold the land back to them.
The amount of troops required would be obsene

No way, keep Switzerland out of the EU. Get cheap flights every few months to Switzlerland and buy a couple of thousand smokes @ 22 euro per 200 on the flight itself. Don't even have to stay over for a night, can do it all in a day trip as the flights are so short.

Quite possibly the stupidest thing I've read in a while and another reason to make me glad I don't live in your poxy country. Switzerland have among the lowest amount of gun related crime in the world. Now I suggest you stop trying to stir up stupid conspiracies on an Irish forum where people tend to have an IQ higher then the temperature of the room they're sitting in and get to school and learn some English so you can write a more coherent post.

Dunno, I read somewhere that the Swiss are regarded as Ueber-Germans by the Germans themselves. I'm German myself and there might be some truth in that.

Do we not already have them surrounded and able to lay siege? Just close the airspace, shut a few mountain tunnels and they will soon have to surrender and we'll have all the pointy chocolate and novelty clocks that we could ever need.

Have you ever been there? (i type slow and didnt see snypers post, i now look stoopid)

Theyre all considered soldiers until they're 30, which mean they're take home gun is fully automatic. And its only semi once they're over thirty.

Theres lots of mountains. Pretty, but not good for fighting in.

Been there a few times, its quite worrying to see lads walking around calm as a breeze with an assualt rifle, buying chocolate with nazi gold.
