The direct fire thing sounds interesting. I presume it is something like hold down ctrl and they shoot where your cursor is.

You can already do that by using the attack ground command.
Apparently it's most likely the feature of taking control of a tank's turret to direct its fire i.e. going into a first person view but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Hopefully it won't be in multiplayer and hopefully the expansion doesn't break too many things.

I meant something more like Soldiers. It worked really well in that game I thought.

    Still buying it :)

I'm glad there are no new factions. Relic can't balance the four factions we have and destroyed Dawn of War with too many so I think multiplayer is better off for it.
I'm looking forward to the new multiplayer modes. I hope there's attack and defend scenarios.

ah well maybe next time they'll put some in,im still gonna get it too :-).

They confirmed that this is exactly what it is, but that it can be turned off for multiplayer.

I bought Company of Heroes about a month ago not knowing anything about and I have to say I'm loving it. So once I have it finished I have the first expansion to look forward too and now this...... woot woot!

    Link?
The only additional info I saw was from a post on GR linking to relic news which said:
Hey folks, I just wanted to clear up some of the initial questions about Tales of Valor.

    1) No new factions are going to be introduced in Tales of Valor.
    2) The new units are new models and textures. New.
    3) Direct fire is something that we're featuring in the campaign, and perhaps one of the new multiplayer modes. It's not something you'll be using in a standard multiplayer game.

There ya go. I think that the expansion will have something for everyone, single-player fans and fans of multiplayer.

Interview with Relic's community manager, Thunder, here.
It's pretty much broken into three parts: what a community manager does, the beta and tales of valor.
He confirms that direct fire is the ability to aim your tank's turret with the mouse cursor and tell it when to fire and that it will be used in only some of the new mulitplayer modes.

^ Yeah, I find that the trouble with playing them is that you are locked into a very ridged build options for too long into every game with them.

As Wehr, stukas will let you take down any emplacements quite easily, assuming you're not dominated in other ways too.
As PE, Marders outrange their AT emplacements when they're locked down so you can crack them that way.

trailer of coh tales of valor here, not that exciting a trailer to be honest.no sign of any new tanks or units.

They've pretty much said there won't be any new units. Just new skins for existing ones. So depending on what you're looking for from an expansion it's either a very good thing or a very bad one.

Theres an article here about the gameplay, sounds cool. http://pc.ign.com/articles/932/932463p1.html

Thumbs down from me – this seems to have too much emphasis on action and not enough on strategy (I've got CoD for that).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Seifer

Well it's thumbs up from me purely because they're not planning on screwing up multiplayer.
But as far as action goes it's still the same standard rts view and you only have one Tiger Ace for the Tiger Ace Campaign so I'd say it'll be fairly tactical.

Not sure what you mean by interact with the other games........you can access all the campaigns if thats what you mean,3 new campaigns, each faction gets 2 new unit,3 new multiplayer modes, gonna start the tiger ace campaign now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Seifer

    Yeah I have it.
Did the Tiger Ace campaign in maybe an hour and a half and I hear the other two are equally short.
The new units are supposed to be ridiculously OP.
Had a game of panzerkrieg (you control only one tank) and it was good fun.

I assume you can do it in skirmish too, haven't tried.
Tiger Ace was just ridiculously short. Finished the US one too. They're all only three missions long.
I was buying the game for the multiplayer add-ons but still very poor imo.

Ya I just finished the tiger ace campaign in like 40 minutes.I think one of them has 6 missions in it.

Was priced 40 in Game but when I went to the til it was 35.

Nope, all 3 missions long, all 3 missions of each taking place on the same map.
Finished them all on hard and took no time.
Anyway, time to mess around with multiplayer.

Since you can't play the operations ranked at the moment I was just playing basic matches:
Played one stonewall (hold off waves of ai troops with three others) and completed it on the first try :P Was luck I got a good group of randomers and was only normal AI. It was fun but frames dropped quite a bit when things got hectic but that's my pcs fault I suppose.
Played one assault (apparently similar to warcraft's DotA) and didn't think much of it at all. That could be cause one of my team lagged out straight away but I think it was more to do with just controlling one guy. No real strategy involved. Again frames went crap too.
Panzerkrieg is definately my favourite, really good fun.
What's ridiculous is that there is only one map for each game type at the moment.

None of the new modes seem to have the same depth as "classic" CoH as relic are now refering to it but I can't go back to playing that until they sort out the buggy mess they have created.

40 euro for an expansion pack with just a few new additions? Fcuk off! Has anyone played much of this since that massive 2.4 balance patch? I tried a few automatch games but only as the Brits so wasn't sure how things had changed...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Seifer

I've been playing 2v2 random only since 2.4 as they managed to introduce a gamebreaking bug for each faction so not gonna waste my time 1v1ing with that.
Relic really are quite inept. They don't seem to follow any coding standards or testing policies. Just change some random stuff and hope it doesn't affect other random stuff.

Can anyone help me with a problem I'm having ? I've a previous account I set up AGES ago with Coh and OF tied to but now It won't let me change my password (which I've forgotten) even after trying both my Coh and OF cd keys (legit) and answering my security question (I checked the email).

Any ideas ? I want to have all three on the one account.

Stardock have it for download for 27 dollars: http://www.impulsedriven.com/cohtov

It's only 27 dollars in north america. It's 32 euro for us on impulse.
You can get the complete pack COH Gold (COH + Opposing front) + Tales of Valor all for 39 euro on GamersGate.
Not bad if you don't have any of them.

    No.

I still haven't gotten Opposing Fronts yet(there's only one reason for that: DRM). I'll get and finish that before I have a look at this. Should devaluate a bit by then.

ToV is now €18.49 at sendit.com.

I bought it from them a few weeks ago after noticing it for sale at Game for €34.99, which I considered way too much for so little.

    Delivery took about 7-9 days.

Looks promising. I like the Russian infantry ideas (fast recruit, can't retreat & 1 rifle per 2 men before upgrades). Should make for some unique new tactics.

Does this need both expansions to work?

No I dont think so,theres also a battle of the bulge mod re-released to work with tov if your interested in trying that.roll on thursday.

Yup; I have been tracking this mod for some time now (if for no other reason than it's one of the few for CoH in the first place). The quality of their work is scarily good - I like their tank models (shame though the buildings are copies of the US tho') & I hope that they got the balancing right. Opposing Fronts has enough accusations of blobbing, the Soviet's cheap, non-retreating units scream "blob".

Anyone still playing this game anyway?

So boards.ie fell over just as Eastern Front got released; has anyone else tried it? I must say that I am very impressed with the thought that has gone behind the Soviet faction. I haven't played any multi in it yet, but it feels balanced enough:

    - Soviets can't retreat
    - Nor do you start with any units.
    - They don't use munitions on the field at all (all abilities have super cooldown). Munitions are used for global upgrades to your troops & vehicles.
    - As far as I can see, the population cap's quite tight, so if you spam infantry (which without upgrades are a bit weak) you'll not afford to put any vehicles on the field.
