Just wonder if anyone knows whats going on with me.

Basically I get a weird feeling (Can't say pain, cause it isn't pain) in my left shoulder when doing weights. Its restricting the weight I can lift.

Presently getting it when doing shoulder presses and front raises. Getting it on the outside of my shoulder facing away from me.

I also get it when I'm picking dumbells off the floor in a seated position to get them onto my lap.

Anyone know whats wrong with me ?

Mmm.. have had a similar "discomfort" in my left shoulder for some time, think the term in my case is "Winged Scapula" been to chiro's, physio's etc can't seem to get it back normal & "consultations" ain't cheap..

    Definate weakness there when lifting..
be interested in who rugby players see for their injurys & any recomendations?

I had that about two months ago. I was getting big into the weights at the time. That ruined my gains. I got a pretty bad flu and when i went to my local GP he diagnosed it straight away. I got an injection in my shoulder and the next day it was fine. €40 incl the injection

About to start back at the weights tonight two months off i lost nearly any gains i had made.

I think I have something similar on my right shoulder, I think it was from doing heavy weighted dips. I used to be doing single arm dumbbell presses with 27kg, and I always used to be able to do more with the right than left, and now am the opposite. It almost feels like it is grinding and about to give way (but not really bad). I dropped down to 23kg and more reps, and laid off the presses for a week or so. I just did some this morning and it seemed a lot better, think I will just rest it more.

First off why the hell are you doing front raises - complete waste of time and a possible cause of shoulder problems.

Stop all pressing movements and start doing band pulls, seated rows (row shrugs), rotator cuff work with less than 4kg weight on the rotator.

Get a massage to loosen out the area or just get a tennis ball in there and work on it yourself.

Direct shoulder work aside from 3-4sets a week is un-necessary as you will get plenty from chest and back work. If your not deadlifting and squatting then do not even get me started!!

Welcome to the club brother. I've had similar "discomfort" for more than a year now. I've managed to more or less work around it - It only really holds me back in a few exercises now but its very frustrating not being able to get back to 100%.

I can't really offer any advice for you except to get it checked out this gets any worse!

what's wrong with front raises? That exercise basically gave me the shoulders I now have!

Seriously, simple injection and its gone. Rest it for a day or two and you can start lifting again. Go to your GP

same here! i had a serious rotator cuff injury which put me out of action for about a year. i think it was the shoulder press that got me, ill never do that again exercise again. i dont think ill ever be 100% either, i still get a twinge every now and then.
Also a big cause (believe it or not) of rotator cuff injury is sleeping with your arm above your head and on your side as this puts alot of pressure on the area...and if your doing this 7 nights a week 7-8 hours at a time... they even make special pillows now to prevent this, coudlnt find one in Ireland though :(

They cause more injuries than any real benefits. Not quite as bad as upright rows but they are still gonna tear up your shoulders. These exercises always produce that telltale pinching and popping sensation. That's your rotator cuff being demolished.

    Do these.

They will strengthen your rotator cuffs and help prevent these types of injuries. Use them as a warm up before your bench or upper body work.
You always hear of people with these injuries but you never see anyone doing this type of prehab work.

Ya see that depends on what you mean. Do you just want to have a blocky looking upper body? Do you specifically want those roundy bulges on the sides bodybuilders go for or do you want strength?

For the average person looking to get big enough for people to comment on the size of your shoulders it's not really shoulders you need to work on. If you threw in the odd bit of military pressing with plenty of chest and particularly back work you'll get bigger up there.

If your gym has it I really like the Hammerstrength seated press machine. Very little stress on the joints and a massive shoulder pump afterwards.

    what a load of balonie!!

Frontal rasies will have TINY affect on shoulder development and all in a negative way.

what exercises/stretches/movements do you mean exactly when you speak of 'rotator cuff work' ?

That vid I posted is a rotator cuff exercise. It's the only one I do and has made my shoulders a lot more resilient.

That's really strange, I thought they were part of the reason my shoulders got bigger over the years.

The shoulder press and military press had to have helped right?

go to a sports physio. People here cant be sure they have suffered from the same thing as you.
Also injections may work fine in the short term. pain will go away BUT corticosteroid injections weaken the ligaments and tendons which stabilise the joint. You are at risk of getting a worse injury at a later stage.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I did chest the other night and had no problems.

However, I played a match last night and my shoulder got a bit sore again. Same feeling in it.

Its happening in my left shoulder. I also note that unlike my right shoulder, I get a lot of clicking in my left shoulder, especially when doing shoulder presses. Is this just a flexibility issue ?

Jesus mate did you read the replies?

Its possibly not so much a flexibility issue as its a strength issue and possible scar tissue in the shoulder.

Overall, go to a physio and get it properly treated as this is just feckin guess work now
