Just got 2 messages from 2 friends within a minute of eachother (one from each). They were saying "omg!!! Look at this video of you!!! You look so funny!!!!"
Then they gave me links to weird sites like:

    wow.oferujemy.com
    and
    youtube-spy.bo.pl

    (Dont click on either).

Now the virus geeks are making us not click on "porn" and making us click on videos of "us"

    *SIGH*

Any message with the term 'OMG' in it gets deleted as a matter of principle.

A video of me dancing you say? Well, in spite of the fact that I don't actually know you I will gladly click on the link you have provided and execute any file present there!

Yeah, a few of my friends fell for it as well. I heard it works by the email you get through a new comment. The bots send you spam, you get an email telling you of a new message or whatever, you open it and then that causes your profile to send those messages. It's a vicious cycle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,910 ✭✭✭✭RoundyMooney

Bebo is fecked altogether these days.

Reminds of yahell some years ago, when the spammers and bots basically took it over, and folk just drifted away.

Now I know most of the illiterate teens who make up a fair proportion of bebo users won't know the difference, but eventually they'll get fed up too.

Now that facebook is taking a simpler approach, and ditching the multiple stupid semi spyware apps that people got bombarded with, it's a far better prospect.

    But, yeah omg...

It is sent from your mates account, therefore the message is under their name. The wording is a bit generic though.

I actually clicked the first one I got due to a bastard coincidence. It came from a mate who lives in the same apartment block as a cute Polish nutjob we had went on the lash with. The mail I got from my mate had a link ending .pl , with the body something like "really funny video of u at d party". Considering it was a Polish URL and the last time she saw me was at 4am a few previous Saturdays when I had her rolling laughing in her apartment by playing/singing rebel songs on the guitar pissed drunk (ignoring the fact I cant actually play :pac: ) I assumed she had videoed me and uploaded it to what appeared to be a youtube-like site :( Thankfully my anti virus wouldnt let me touch it.

And thankfully there was no video :) I was brickin that I was about to become one of these flavour of the month net videos. You know, Star Wars kid, that dickhead crying about Britney Spears, that kind of vid.

Bebo related, anyone having trouble uploading photos this evening?

I dunno, could then end up in a Weezer video, and IMO, that'd be pretty class!

I originally opened the link on my laptop...stoopid...never even looked at it or anything. All sorted now though...hopefully it stops me using the site!

If you end up in a weezer video I'd feckin kill ya.

Being in a weezer vidoe has been my ambition since I watched "pork and beans" 2 minutes ago

ah dont put who ever started this on a pedistal by labelling them hackers :) far from it im sure...

And with all these things... its really the unknowningness (best i could come up with instead of stupidity :)) of whoever clicks on those links and resends those messages to their contacts that should be laughed at :)

Are they actually hacking into accounts and sending these mails, or when I receive a mail if I open it it is programmed to be forwarded to my mates automatically, but nobody actually has hacked my password.

Id be worried about it gettin hacked, if they shut your account, well, nearly like losing photos in a house fire!

Anyone know? Why are they doing this anyway?

I think they keylog your pass and then log on and spam your friends.

I don't think the friends who messaged me would be stupid enough to mail me about that.

I don't like facebook at all. Bebo had it's good points but the spam and sh!t put me well off it.
All facebook is good for is the photo sharing. People don't really seem to interact on it as much as they did on bebo, it's all "someone added someone else as a friend" and "Suchandsuch say's: Oh I drank too much last night :(" And I don't like blue:pac:

Bebo has brought me closer to family and I've discovered new family i didn't know about, I also use it to message people i don't see anymore and see how they are getting along.

The activity has certainly died down a lot lately, And all the spam and fake profiles being set up is annoying, I hope the makers can find a way around all of this.

    Hacker =! Cracker.

DEFINITION - Hacker is a term used by some to mean "a clever programmer" and by others, especially those in popular media, to mean "someone who tries to break into computer systems."

    1) Eric Raymond, compiler of The New Hacker's Dictionary, defines a hacker as a clever programmer. A "good hack" is a clever solution to a programming problem and "hacking" is the act of doing it. Raymond lists five possible characteristics that qualify one as a hacker, which we paraphrase here:

    * A person who enjoys learning details of a programming language or system
    * A person who enjoys actually doing the programming rather than just theorizing about it
    * A person capable of appreciating someone else's hacking
    * A person who picks up programming quickly
    * A person who is an expert at a particular programming language or system, as in "Unix hacker"

DEFINITION - A cracker is someone who breaks into someone else's computer system, often on a network; bypasses passwords or licenses in computer programs; or in other ways intentionally breaches computer security. A cracker can be doing this for profit, maliciously, for some altruistic purpose or cause, or because the challenge is there. Some breaking-and-entering has been done ostensibly to point out weaknesses in a site's security system.

The term "cracker" is not to be confused with "hacker". Hackers generally deplore cracking. However, as Eric Raymond, compiler of The New Hacker's Dictionary notes, some journalists ascribe break-ins to "hackers."

A classic story of the tracking down of a cracker on the Internet who was breaking into U.S. military and other computers is told in Clifford Stoll's The Cuckoo's Egg.

I doubt it to be honest, I think it's on its last legs. The majority of people are using Facebook now, except maybe those under 18 or thereabouts.
