Swapping install from one computer to another..

I have an old Thinkpad, with very few install options (no CD drive, no floppy, won't boot from USB stick). Was hoping to put a new HD in it, and a linux distro.
The simplest way is to buy a cheap ext CD drive, but id prefer not to.

Can I create a linux install (thinking of Fluxbuntu) on a different computer (ie using a liveCD to install to the new HD via usb enclosure) and then swap it into the old Thinkpad?

Obviously its a totally different computer, different drivers etc, would it be able to boot up and fix itself?

Once you have an internet connection, I'd say yes. I think there's very little you can't achieve with a linux install and an internet connection.

Thanks, the target system would have a new HDD with no OS, so installing from within Windows isn't an option.

Can it netboot ? look in the BIOS for the boot options , if it can download

and run it on another pc.

You will also need the netboot files for whatever you want to install.
