University College Cork has decided to begin embryonic stem cell research.

The decision was made at a meeting of the governing body today, making UCC the first university in the country to begin the controversial practice.

However, college authorities have said that any research using embryonic stem cells will be conducted under strict guidelines.

All projects must be approved by an ethical committee and must have substantial scientific merit.

All cells used will be from voluntary donors whose privacy will be protected.

Any thoughts on this folks? Baby killers or innovators? :)

I go to UCC, and this is just further proof that we are better than all the other uni's! :D

Unfortunately, the extreme pro-life loonies will soon be in full force protesting an issue they probably don't know the first thing about.

    Will a dead pope do?
“Therefore, by the authority which Christ conferred upon Peter and his Successors, and in communion with the Bishops of the Catholic Church, I confirm that the direct and voluntary killing of an innocent human being is always gravely immoral. This doctrine, based upon that unwritten law which man, in the light of reason, finds in his own heart (cf. Rom 2:14-15), is reaffirmed by Sacred Scripture, transmitted by the Tradition of the Church and taught by the ordinary and universal Magisterium.” (Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, n. 57).

At least they are ok with adult stem cell research.

This is terrible. If something isn't done soon Ireland will run the risk of becoming a secular state.

    I think it's great.

I do not see how stem cell research could possibly be wrong. Unless they were of course creating a new race of annoying girls who would paint themselves orange, wear furry boots and have sparkly phones, because we have enough of them already. Enough I tells ya!

I read that in the Metro today and thought it was a brilliant ... Wonder if they will now implement that in other universities...

And for all of those pro-life activists for F*** Sake get off your high horse and let science progress.

    ah that felt good...:p!

I misheard that UCC were beginning stencil research....

I had the Spirograph out and was cleaning off the dust and, well, let's just say I'm a tad disappointed.

Bring it on I say. For the past decade I've had to watch helplessly while one of my parents has suffered horribly from an incurable degenerative disease. Something that could potentially be cured with the help of stem cell research. I'd much rather worry about helping living people and their loved ones than embryos. Cruel but true.

If boards was a microcosm of Irish life then most Irish people are in favour of stem cell research. My faith in the intelligence of the Irish race has been restored.

Indeed. Ireland currently only allows surplus IVF embryos to be used for the research. plus there are umbilical stem cells. The process of 'manufacturing' embryos specifically for stem cell research or therapy is the part I would have a difficulty with. However, I hope this research leads to groundbreaking treatments for people (unlikely that it will come from UCC however...).

Depends, if you consider life begins at conception then you'll have a problem with this. Your essentially draining the life from a child, creating a new race of vampire/zombies. If you think an embryo is just a series of cells then theres no problem.

Let science progress at the cost of our morals. Typical cluchie college to take this kinda stuff on.

    You were an embryo once

I for one have no problem with creating a new race of vampires or zombies. It's the right time of year for it too :)

I'm still an embryo and I'm 100% in favour of this. It's time that us Embryos For Choice And Scientific Freedom made our voices heard. I hope they'll be able to grow me a new liver soon to replace the old one after the Christmas drinking season.
