Yep, and being responsible for that rubbish blackens them in my book.

that's podge as evil santa isnt' he's changed, those are really threatening anymore, podge was really really scary character

it was funny at the end they flicked a switch to turn our tvs back to widescreen lol.

    got this from Wikipedia:
Zig and Zag's first ever DVD will be released by RTÉ in October 2008 to celebrate the duo's 21st anniversary since appearing on Irish Television. The DVD will be entitled Best Bitz from Back Den and will feature a compilation of links, music items, Christmas Specials spanning Zig and Zag's Den years between 1987 and 1993.

Who did the other puppet that was dressed up as the evil santa? What was his name?

Also, did anyone hear what the RTE lady said at the end - something about their first apperance in 10 years?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭plastic membrane

Hah! I was at that Chile match. No matter what they have done since (Podge and Rodge is a pale in comparision) Zig and Zag made my childhood. Also, Captain Pillowcase didnt look like a Klan member like i feared. All good. Shame on RTE for losing so much footage..

Ah nostalgia...back when I could listen to D'arcy or Dempsey for longer than 2 minutes without wanting to pull my hair out.

    "I don't believe it!"
lol had forgotten all about this catchphrase...did it pre-date Meldrew? If not it's close.
Birthday rap ftw...what do we get nowadays...Martin bloody King ?

We don't see nearly enough of this type of programming on RTÉ...maybe they've copped on after seeing figures for RINTY, so much other gold they must hold in the archives...time to blow the dust off especially for christamas season IMO...

Telly is being watched by someone else at mo
They were amazing - a lot of there work though was considerably risky - class and completly off the cuff.
Were there many jokes that probably didnt get then and might now? Zig and Zag from Zog broke my heart when they left for english TV

    They did?

I loved Zig and Zag. A guy in my class got one of their shirts for sending a pic he drew into the show and getting it shown on TV. I was so jealous. :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭lostexpectation

anybody remember that really big competition with more prizes then you could shake a stick at they had about sandwich filling and you had to send in your own on a post card, me and ny brother did, only comp we've ever sent off for , and then a guy in my brother's class happen to win and he got to go on the den, we were dead jealous.

they should have a zid and zag convention like the father ted one, and i was watching the office convention on youtube there, they idd a whole weekend of stuff.

I had forgot how good they were, DVD out on 7th Nov.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

I don't think they where the best bits. There is better stuff from them on You Tube. I was a bit disappointed by this programme.

I hope the DVD release is better.

Well "Reeling in the Years" and "Zig and Zag" for me this Christmas. :)

Any body on the Birthday roller?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

The birthday roller rap was great, he didn't miss anyone's name! Old school fun, my memories of the Zig and Zag days were rather hazey.

Zig & Zag are legends! Will definitely have to watch Tubridy when they're on. I would love to see the Christmas episode in full again!

Pity the show was only 30 minutes.

Shame on RTE for losing so much footage..
The problem seems to be that they never recorded the in-between links to begin with. They have records of the Christmas specials and stuff like that where the quality is noticeable better.

But yeah the real classic stuff is the likes of the Eamonn Grumpy and Johnny Styles and having bands in like Something Happens and Engine Alley.

(know one of the guys who was on the birthday roller.)

My comunion photo was posted up one year and they said I had gotten married - was a surprise my Dad had sent in photo and me and girls from school sitting down watching it - prob one of proudest moments ever. I always thought xmas additions were anti climax - but prob just season in general. Best bits imho were their off the cuff jokes ad when Dustin joined them. Still broke my heart though

I was on the birthday roller!:D
Although we had to cheat:eek: my birthday was during the summer so I never got in on my actual birthday and my sister was in october so got on it every year, so one year my mam stuck both of our names on the postcard. a few weeks later Zig and Zag were doing the 'looking into people's sitting-rooms through the magic binoculars' thingy and said they could see us. We were chuffed!:pac:

The Den was all about Zig and Zag, Dempsey and D'Arcy were merely their warm up act and a human host for the show.

Dustin with them was great crack.

Was always disappointed and sad that I never got on the birthday roller too, it was the business and being able to tell your mates your were onit was something to be proud off.

I'll put my life on the fact that the DVD will be identical to the show they showed tonight. They do it every year with other shows.

You might as well start preparing your rope and stool to stand on. The DVD will me much longer at almost 2.5 hours with about an hour and a half made up of clips like last night and the rest consiting of different specials like the Christmas ones. I for one will be getting it !

Didnt Darcy say a while back that a lot of the films were destroyed by fire or summit and that his mother had a good bit of the show recorded on vhs. Thats why the quality was so bad for a lot of it. Suppose thats the one thing we can be grateful to Mrs. Darcy for.

RTE should make an appeal for everyone to check their video collection and send in copies. Id say between everyone a lot of the series would be covered.

Great show, brought back lots of memories, however, the best line was when Dustin turned to President Mary Robinson and said, "Ah the bold Mareser, how's it goin?"

RTE didn't record them they went out live and due to some financial restrictions they never recorded The Den. Also RTE possible considered The Den as part of their presentation unit rather then the Young People's Dept. So it is as unlikely that RTE recorded every time Thelma Mansfeild introduced a show in the early 1960s.

There was a guy on the Den is Ten (1996) who recorded many of the shows, and AFAIK that is where much of the footage comes from.

Whist a while! Part two of the YouTube clips.
