    I'm sorry, but the neat and tidy microeconomic theory you use to assess this simply doesn't hold up in reality. What you suggest would only aggravate the situation further.

    Just remember that a banks fate it tied to the underlying success of the economy not the other way around, we need banks they just dont need to be called AIB/BOI going forward, I have no idea what the best model going forward is however given that the Irish economy is very small, I would prefer to see smaller regional banks with a narrow focus compared to the nightmare that Iceland ended up with.
    Whatever happens I will judge it based on who pays the price, if losses are socialised with no recourse then it will be a failure by my standards and it will lock in a Japanese style delflation that will last a generation, either way it will be worse then anything experienced in Irish history
