Potentially superfluous question

Right, I'm currently beginning the long slow road back to fitness.

At the moment, I'm only swimming, because I'm pretty busy in college, and I know it's a versatile exercise form and it helps me to relax while I'm exercising.

Anyway, as with so many swimming pools, the one I use has a whole raft of water jets, etc, and people seem to be glued to them. I'm curious as to what effect they actually have on someone? Do they do anything to you?

Apologies if this question's not quite right for the forum, but I've no idea where else to ask.

They are just a toy. The only thing that really works is actually swimming.
