Ok, from reading the "For once and all" thread, people were saying how they thought kane wasnt(or was) a vital part of the attitude era.

    But who was (to you)?

Austin. He epitomised what "Attitude" was all about. He was involved in the best feuds - McMahon, Rock, HHH, Foley, he drew like no one else. Its a no brainer as far as I am concerned.

Arguments could be made for DX as well, as they certainly pushed the envelope of what could and could not be done on TV. But overall, Austin was probably a bigger draw than anyone else at the time.

    Stone Cold Steve Austin,

Personally, he did it for me. There are just so many great Austin moments to choose from.
    EDIT:
Sorry, for some reason I didnt see the poll.... Austin and the mcmahons were my choices.
Without mcmahon Austin wouldnt be 'Austin'...

Seriously why is Kane on this list exactly as it is pretty well established he wasnt a draw so how could he be valuable?

The answer is Austin for the first half of it and The Rock for the second half.

For the pure fun of it.

The question isnt "out of these main players.."
    It's "Out of these wrestlers..."

    anything could have happened.

Not it couldn't, three things saved WWE from Bankruptcy in 1997, 1) WWE using ECW as a template to restructure the way they presented television, leading to 2) the likes of DX, The Nation etc which in turn, producing Rock and HHH, and 3) Steve Austin, from his storylines that kept you watching, to his merchandise sales.

Between that and mismanagement from WCW and ECW, you're looking at the reasons as to why WWE stands alone today.

But how does he even make the cut? Sable should have been chosen instead of him.

Artistically WWF were putting out better shows than WCW for most of 1997. They developed a tonne of momentum with their characters as ShawnRaven pointed out in 1997.

The fan disappointment over Hogan beating Sting at Starrcade had a part to play too in my opinion.

Mainly to wind people up because of the kane poll that is going on.

    Are you going to vote?

So in other words Kane has no legitimate claim to be in it. As long as that is established.

What years do you consider the Attitude Era?

I almost fully agree, on TV, WWE's shows television shows were better, but WWE's PPV's that year were lackluster at best.

Sting, after being missing for a while, gets beaten by Hogan and takes another paid vacation. Stupid booking.

Anyways Austin is winning this poll by a mile which makes sense as he was the face of the attitude era, his feuds like someone said were the most memorable of those years and everything about his character was great. The music, the promo's, his attitude we may never see anybody like him again.

Just from me and my friends I'd've said what first really drew us in was the Tag Team Division with the Hardys, E+C etc.

    I voted for the mcmahons.

    But I immediately regret it.

The reason I voted for them was because I don't think you can have a "most" vital part. Either it was vital, or it wasn't.

Austin needed the McMahons, and The Rock. The chemistry between all three was vital.

However, Austin was most certainly the most valuable player, which is why I should've voted that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 638 ✭✭✭Endaaaagh

I'm voting the McMahons...or more to the point for Vince. He was pretty much the main Heel character during the attitude era. Nearly everyone else on the list had a major fued with him one time or another (I say nearly cause I can't think of any Kane/McMahon Fued off the top of my head but I'm sure if it happened someone will refresh my memory). In essence wasn't one of the main points of the Attitude Era Rebelling Against Authority (Vince)

In fairness though, Vince owns the company. How can he not be the most valuable player. He made the decisions and got Austin into the comapany in the first place

He gave Austin the Ringmaster gimmick, said he thought Austin couldnt talk and had to begged to go with Austin 3:16 after Austin cut the promo at KOTR 1996.

The McMahons had a part in the attitude era both as heels and in pulling the strings behind the scenes. Would Austin have been half as successful if he didn't have McMahon to play off?

Exactly, so much of Austin's popularity was down to Vince and him and Shane to a lesser extent played a massive part in getting D-X over. Same with Foley

I say he would. It was Austin/Rock that drew and headlined Wrestlemania on three different occasions, not Austin/McMahon.

It was Austin/Michaels/Tyson who began to lure viewers from WCW to WWE in 1998, not Austin/McMahon.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying Vince didn't have a big hand in it, it's obvious that he did. I'm just saying he'd have been a household name without having Vince to play off.
