5D or 50D

what to do, what to do.....

I've been saving for ages for a 5D MKII, but now that it's nearly out, I'm getting cold feet to an extent. It's hard to justify paying that price when I'm no more than a hobbyist. I currently have a 30D and I've never had any problems with it, resolution wise. I would however like some of the new features that both the 5 and 50D have i.e. Digic IV, huge high res lcd, live view and HD video on the 5D (although that will probably just be a fad for me).
My lens line-up is Sigma 10-20, Sigma 30mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.4, canon 100mm 2.8 macro and canon 70-200 f4. Obviously I would need to get rid of the two Sigmas if I were to get the 5D, but I was thinking about replaving both of them with a Canon 17-40 F4 anyway. I've gotten into the habit of using primes mostly and could see a lot of use for the 50mm 1.4 on a 5D.
On the other hand, getting a 50D would be a lot cheaper and would open the door for a couple of new lenses, nicer tripod etc...

so - what would you do??

Get the 5D, 50D is hardly any improvement from the 40D..if I were choosing it'd be between the 40D and 5D.

If i had the moola - I'd be getting the 5D

Didn't I see a thread like this recently..........it went on for ever.......

Your last idea seems best, ie. go for the 50D. No, wait, what about the 40D ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,301 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

Get the 5D (MKII)... it'll save u in the long run...

I started with a 400D, moved to a 40D and now am moving to the 5D next year. Some of my lenses are EF-S and will be of no use on the 5d... (although I'll keep the 40D as backup). Would have been cheaper in the long run if I'd just gone full frame from the get go (although you've no idea how much you'll get into it I suppose at the start)

If you do get the 50D now you'll need to think carefully about what lenses to get in case you go full frame later, and some full frame ranges dont make as much lense on crop cameras...

Its a hell of a lot of cash either way I guess... What camera have you got at the moment?

I'm in the same boat but with a deadline of early December to get my new cam sorted out.

The way I see it if I get the 50d I'll need a wideangle lens like your 10-20, thats an additional cost which will bring the price difference between the two down a bit. But the 50d will give longer reach.
The 5dII will give me full frame and probably better image quality but I really need to see production samples to be able to judge that one.

I think the best thing to do is wait untill the 5dII comes out and see how much it's gonna cost and how much better it is than the 50d.

I might even go for the original 5d if its price starts to plummet.

5D MkII isn't really doing it for me. Going to go with the MkI and two quality lenses. MkI hasn't become a bad camera overnight.

    40d has live view too.
MK2 is just insanely priced for an average hobbiest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

well I wouldn't go from a 30D to a 40D. I think a 50D at least adds some more features that would make the upgrade worth it...

I played with a mates 50d the other night

the images at higher iso are much better than my 40d

although i didnt play with it for that long, the images did look better

I started the other thread on this conundrum and was leaning towards the 5dII

but now to be honest .. I think ill go for the 50D .. im waiting for the in depth review on dpreview .. but so far the 50D looks great ...

like you said HD video would be a fad .. for me too , and the slower fps
on the 5d II wouldn't suit what i like shooting ...

that leaves IQ, but will IQ at lower ISO's be _that_ much higher ?.. granted it will be at high ISO's but i rarely shoot at ISO >400 ..

So im thinking of getting the 50D + a tokina wide 12-24 or Sigma 10-20 ...

you have to think what you _really_ need ? ...

its a lot of money to spend on a body alone .. i don't mind spending that kind of money on lenses as they age far far slower ...

the 70-200 f2.8 IS L will still be a class lens in 10 years .. will the 5d mk II ?

Edit -- I'm sure AnimalRights will have some input soon into this :)

go for camera that suits your photography subjects. If the crop factor is not an issue (or even welcomed) and higher fps is a benefit, go for 50D.

it is a lot of money to be outlaying!! especially in the current economic gloom :(
i had a EOS 350 D and it was grand for what i wanted to do with photography. I did get tempted into getting a 30 D and i sort of regretted that because the 350 D was more than adequate (probably still is for a lot of the stuff i do)
However I embarked along a path (which isn't finished yet) that required my getting equipment that had a much higher efficiency, dependability and lower mean time failure rate than the prosumer models.

if i wasn't involved in that - I'd happily be shooting with my 30 D which i often bring out with me in favour of the two other cameras I own

so I'd say if you must upgrade! go for the 50D and even at that - ask yourself 'do you really need it?'

    :)

do I really need it? we have to spend our way out of recession so I fell it's my duty to upgrade!

Get the 50D now and buy better glass.
Then save and go for the 5D MK III when it comes out. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭sasar

I would get 5D mark II as it is FF after all.

get nothing!! keep your money to feed your family!!! ;)

Reason dictates that good glass outlives all bodies and that probably the best way to go, by the way I do agree with that to a point..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

the 'better glass' argument seems to be getting the upper hand in my mind. anyone have a 16-35 2.8? is it all that? FM reviewers seem to be of two minds

I've given Jackdaw more input into this subject than I've put into my lovelife. :pac:

I ordered my 5D mk II from Gunn's, Kathy has said she will beat the other Dublin brick n mortar shop prices...they are getting as far as she knows a definite 5 of them in and I was the 5th order.
Their after sales service would be far better than the other shops too.

Look forward to seeing your first shots with it!
Are you going to keep the 40D too?

    Welcome back

Yeah, 40D is a great camera, I'll keep it for rough gigs, sports and erm anywhere that is rough!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

well ive learned [not that ive used many slrs] its the photographer, theres only so much the camera can do, 50D doesnt seem to have any out of this world features, it does have a few extras but no much of a difference between that and 40D, not worth the price jump

How much is it in Gunns, or is the price not confirmed yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

thanks all. have pretty much decided to go with the 50D and better glass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

In the better glass territory, I have found the biggest jumps are in the prime categories. I have the 135L/85L/50 f1.4/15 f2.8 fish, these lenses are superb and all except the 50mm are exceptional wide open and to me thats what seals the deal in terms of glass. I would have concerns with the likes of the 5dmk2 and the 50d in terms of the high ISO they go up to, if you are using such a high ISO then it dictates that the light is very bad and that tells me that the AF wont keep up with the light available and you will get a lot of hunting. Just beware in very low light situations to keep this in mind..

Well if you read my earlier post you will see that the cheapest shop so far in Dublin is €2500 so I would guess they will be either €2480 or even €2450.

if you get L class, may as well get the best in that range .. 16-35 f2.8 ...

it's not all that according to FM. Certainly not at almost 3 times the price. F4 is good enough for me, especially with the better noise performance of larger sensors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭Rael

Coming from a slightly different angle I'd be reluctant to get a 50D, it seems the 50D is fairly unreliable with approximately 50% of units returning an err 99 in the first few days of shooting. Take a look at Fred Miranda, Photography on the Net, DPReview to see the comments. Even the reviewer on Camera Labs.com said he got an err 99.

Allegedly the problem comes from the fact that Canon has reduced or used a cheaper metal in its gold connectors between the Camera, the lenses and battery grips.

    Ouch !! I didn't realise it was 3 times the price ...

ok so .. 17-40 it is .. 17mm on FF will give great wide shots..

In fairness this only happened when they used an old worn 17-85 canon lens,
when they used a newer one it never happened ...

When exactly is the 5DII coming out ?

I've seen some sites saying 20th November, others saying December ?

I'm just about running out of patience here...

Mid to late Jan ! nah thats a mistake sure it says NOV 08 on the canon site...

I think they are referring to when their will be some available, unless you've pre-ordered they are going to obviously not have enough for the demand.
    Did you pre-order one?
    Gunn's are only getting 5 in and I'm #5!
I would imagine then they would have to try and squuze more out of the Canon reps over the next few weeks/months.

All the reading you've done on this and you've not really read at all!
I expect as I said in previous post unless you've pre-ordered you my friend are knackered!
    You needed to order it.
    Think Playstations/Wiis etc etc
Anything new and innovative always is in demand and not available on their launches!
