Opinions on Elite Performance Centres

I'm thinking of doing a business plan (College related) for a Performance Centre that is somewhat similar to the facilities down in UL. I'd be interested to hear from some of you folk your thoughts and recommendations on this.

What I've in mind is somewhere that is located near the M50/M1 that would be used teams and individuals throughout the year. As for the premises itself I'm thinking a warehouse style building that could comfortably fit gym equipment that would serve the needs of a squad (25-30 players) training all at once. I was thinking of a boxing section, along with speed and agility area, a small canteen/kitchen area, meeting and video analysis room, injury treatment rooms along with one or two other things to be decided. Start up wise costs would be pretty big and it would probably be wiser to scale up as I go along.

Anyway the basic idea is to have a centre that would be available to athletes from rugby, gaa, soccer, boxing, basketball and olympic hopefuls. I'd like the centre to be somewhere that young aspiring athletes would instantly equate to helping them achieve their goals. For teams I could see a market for pre season training especially in junior clubs who may not have access to facilities that some senior clubs have at their disposal. I'd see the need for a website that would allow individuals to log in and enter their eating habits, training records on days not at the centre, coaches would be able to track progress and would be able to coordinate training much more effciently.

It's a rough idea at the moment and as already said I'm just looking for some opinions from some of you. At the moment the only performance centres that I know of are in UL, DCU, UCD and there's a couple of olympic sports that have their own centres too.

    Thanks

I obviously think it's a great idea, but I don't think I'd be able to make it work. I can't get my head around it. That's not to say it wouldn't work, jsut that I couldn't do it.

If you have the vision, drive, and most importantly, the balls to pull it off, I think it would be a great thing for this country.

i think its only a business plan he's putting together for college i dont think he's going to start it up,

i put an indoor running track going around the inside edge of the building and all the weights, boxing stuff etc in the centre

I wouldn't bother with a boxing ring and stuff like that as it's minority and the IABA have a very good set up as is. You could save yourself a few grand on that. You'd probably also have to include saunas, steam rooms etc. I'd put in a massive indoor open area with a 100m track and a narrow track round the outside for just running on. In fact, I'd have dirty dreams about designing a place like that.

Also, change of use planning permission costs about €4,000 :( Something to consider.
