Last year if you got 570 points or over you got €2000 if you aren't in the medicine/denistry/pharmacy area. Can't give it out in those courses cos everyone gets really high points. Don't think you get it if you repeat the leaving either.

Any idea when one would find out about this?

AFAIK there are only 60 available and they are distributed through the different departments. I got 570 and didn't get one, while another guy doing the exact same course as me got 570 and he did get one. :(

UCC did offer Entrance Scholarships of £500 to the top 15 entrants on the year I registered (1996). I was lucky enough to receive one with a score of 580 points. I'd imagine that has changed a good bit since as higher points are much more common now. At the time, I don't think it mattered which course you registered for - again that has probably changed since.

Additionally scholarships are then awarded based on the year-end examinations, or you may be eligible for other specialist scholarships. Have a look in the college calendar for more information

I'm pretty sure there are 60 scholarships of 2000e, must have got >570 in the leaving and they are restricted to 12 scholarships per faculty. so just by getting 570 or more points in the leaving isn't a guaranteee that you'll get one.

I went to the Admissions office in UCC last week to enquire about the entrance scholarship. They told me that I'm on the list and that recipients of the scholarships should be contacted this week by post. Apparently there's a presentation ceremony on December 9th. Because there were so many students in my course who scored 600 big ones we'll be recieving a reduced scholarship:(! Oh well!

Even if you had gone, there's no guarantee you'd have received one because there are a limited number available. So don't feel too bad about it.

I hope you are joking. No correlation between leaving cert points, final year college results.

I did add a pacman and it was 2 years ago but..
Are you saying there is no correlation between leaving cert points and final year college results?

Apples and oranges. There is some correlation I believe but the leaving cert is a memory test and nothing more. University is something else entirely which you are not prepared for in secondary level.

You'd have gotten it in 2008 anyways.

Not sure what the credentials will be this year.

    Good luck! :)

Reviving this topic with a question that bothers me a lot:

On what exact basis are they awarded? I know that the cut-off point is 570 and all that jazz. But say if a lot of people got big points, would they raise this say to 590?
And also, if you get above 600, are you guaranteed one? And does the scholarship pay the entrance fee AND gives you 2k on top or what? I'm going to study pharmacy in UCC btw (next year).

Turns out there was a lot of questions from me xD

When I got mine in 2008, I'm pretty sure pharmacy people had to get 600 points out of 600 as they're lumped in with medicine and stuff. So now you'd probably need 625 or whatever the max is nowadays.
Na you only get the 2000 (might even be less for pharmacy/medicine as its spread over more people). Have to pay for registration yourself unfortunately!

The basis is that they try to spread the scholarships out to some degree to all of the various colleges e.g. Business & Law, Science & Engineering etc. which generally means its easier for business, law, arts students to get them as less people getting maximum points tend to do those courses!
