    Kickboxing/Grappling/MMA

    Olympic Handball.

I'm pretty sure I'll go to some Judo/MMA stuff once/twcie a week and use redbrick every day but I don't know if Ill get much return for my 4 euro on the others.

Games, Film, Music, Comic and Art.

Most societies I've joined since first year I think. It was a rather hectic two days in the Hub.

Mondays classes take place in the handball court of DCU sport centre while tuesdays sessions take place on the sprint track upstairs (Gallery)

I got the information from a thread on a different message board the organiser posts on. I'm sure they'll try and get an email out over the weekend once all the addresses have been entered onto the computer.

Don't think I have time to dedicate to any other socs on top of going to the gym, work, being on a committee and lectures so just stuck to what I know.

    My interpretation is:

The different clubs and societies receive a grant (aka money) from the college. The Sports Club Committee (SCC) is responsible for distributing money to the sports clubs. The amount of funding is dependent on a number of factors including how many members the club has, how often it trains, how expensive it is to run the club and probably some more harder to define attributes. The MMA club is a new club based on the Kickboxing club and therefore has not confirmed how much grant it will get. Either way, the club must employ a coach and the coach must be paid.

After basic equipment is purchased there isn't a lot of money left over in the kitty to pay the coach for a number of days trainings, therefore a small sum (~2euro), per class may be charged.

Some of the other martial arts club may be more established and have already secured funding to pay their coaches, or they may not have a "professional" coach and instead have a senior student coaching.

Stupid question, but if you missed Clubs and Socs day, can you still join up to a society by going to the AGM and paying your money there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

You can join a society at any time at all.

If you go to their AGM there'll probably be someone there to sign you up, but you can also just go to the Clubs and Societies Offices (upstairs in the Hub) and join.

jiujitsu starts off with more grappling & standing clinch work but is mainly known for mat workwith submission holds. last night was good fun but i'd say it works up to one hell off a tough workout.

cactus jack is quite right in what he says but I like typing so I'll give you my opinion as just a ordinary member of the club, I'm not committee:

The DCU MMA club is a mixture of Jiujitsu (Brazilian Jiujitsu/BJJ) and Kickboxing. Jiujitsu is mostly concerned with grappling ("wrestling") on the ground focusing on positional dominance and submissions (armbars, chokes, strangles). Kickboxing in this context is focused on the principle of full contact striking using hands and feet as well as elbows and knees. Both of the classes however are concerned with the application of both arts to the MMA context so will be different to traditional kickboxing or jiujitsu classes.

Here are some youtube videos which show what each discipline is about

    Jiujitsu
    Kickboxing
    MMA
