The vibe I get from it is a mixture of The Thing (the movie now, not that dreadful PS2 game) & System Shock, so it could be an interesting game toplay.

I hope this is as scary as doom 3! :D You cant get other weapons other than the mining weapon thing?

Pfffh Doom 3 wasn't scary, not unless you have a pathological fear of cupboards :p

Dark corridor with big gun in a well light room...hmm, i wonder whats behind all those walls?

I didnt really like Doom 3, and it wasnt a patch on FEAR. But FEAR wasnt a patch on System Shock 2 (scariest game ever!). I'm loving the looks of this though. Have high hopes for it.

Doom 3 was scary at first, then it got boring and reptitivie.

    More here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=198352

    Sounds good alright.

You know I'm kinda hoping that this isn't going to get all around acclaim. Call me mean-spirited, but its out on the 25th which is also Far Cry 2/Fable 2 day (lucky I don't have a PS3 for LittleBigPlanet!). Dead Space looks very promising, but Far Cry 2 looks a bit more promising.

Theres around a fortnight where theres two or three good games released a week, and if they all turn out to be good then will have no time to play them. 'tis weird that there are too many good games being released from the end of the month, considering there hasn't been anything worth a purchase in quite a while!

    Damn choices!

+1 This is a ridiculous month for games releases.

Aye it's a busy period, just off the top of my head, for me personally there's:
    Dead Space
    Fallout 3
    Red Alert 3
    Far Cry 2
    Mirror's Edge

    I'm sure there's more ...

And seems Persona 3: FES, Castlevania: Order of Ecclessia, Dragon Quest IV, Spiderman Web of Shadows and more all hold a chance of being very good, along with GoW 2, Fallout 3 and Mirrors Edge (the latter looks really impressive). Dead Space will have to do an impressive job if it is going to stand out (especially since there seems to be a lot of shooters around the same time).

Really does look like something worth playing, and had it been released a month ago may have had a good chance at doing well, especially with an interesting marketing push behind it (interactive comics et al fleshing out the story before the game arrives, even if it doesn't seem much more than typical sci-fi kind of stuff). Will be interesting to see how successful it is, and if can compete against the better established franchises in a few weeks.

If Doom 3 wasn't scary then I'm literally a baby!

The game was infinately scarier than Fear which...wasn't at all scary.

It got to the point pretty soon in where it's like "aww there's that nice little ghost girl who won't hurt me" :p

Dead space would be pretty playable on the console I guess. Third person games generally fare quite well on them with the gamepad. Is it even coming out on the pc?

Reviewed in PC Zone. Gets a good score but major issues with Mouse/Keyboard controls.

Its not a first person shooter, its a third person shooter.
And FPSs tend to sell 10x on consoles what they sell on PC anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,693 ✭✭✭Jack Sheehan

Doom 3 was about as scary as a small glass of water and a disprin tablet. Sys Shock 2 on the other hand. Freaky as hell. Condemned also deserves a mention. Oh, and you forgot Far Cry 2 on your list of releases.

Well you guys can go on about console FPSs being crap all you like, I've played on both, including several of the games mentioned in this thread, and I play almost exclusively on consoles now, even though by PC is capable of playing most of the games out now.

But anyway, that's beside the point, which was that FPSs are a waste on consoles.
If the publisher is selling 10x copies, I don't think it can be classified as a waste.

I don't have issues with third person shooter games on consoles with joypads but you can never beat the precision of a mouse and keyboard, tracking targets is so much better on the mouse and keyboard.

Its a shame that the PC version of Dead Space is reported to suffer from lousey mouse and keyboard controls but thats almost certainly to do with lazy developers not properly implementing the controls. But hopefully they will fix it in a patch.

You seem to be incapable of separating the following two concepts: monetary value for the games' publisher and the enjoyment value for the person playing it.

    Bizarre really...

I also seem to be capable of understanding why several million people purchase a game, when seemingly its impossible for them to enjoy it

  • Can we try keep it to the topic, instead of flaming and talking about doom 3?? neway just wondering if you could try using a 360 controller instead of using the mouse+keyboard which may help pc buyers.

    Good video review

This is definately a lights off crap your pants game. Some of the negative aspects highlighted in that review though, back-tracking etc.

Anyone check out the animated comic they have up on xbox live marketplace? I like the story so far. Can't wait for the game.

Interesting thing about this game, there are no menus; everything in done in-game.

    7/10 on Eurogamer.

It looks ok but I'm not so sure it falls into the survival horror category.
Seems more like lost planet.. minus the mechs.

ah boo. I was hoping this might be a 8/10 title, 7/10 titles on EG seem do be worth skipping.

EG discussion is full of irate gamers giving out about the 7/10 despite 8-9/10s everywhere else.

    Fun to read: http://www.eurogamer.net/article_discussion.php?article_id=259466&comment_start=0

Even the reviewer comes on to defend it.

Doom 3 was scary if you were playing sleep deprived at 3AM in a dark room with nobody else around with headphones up full blast.

Well some parts anyway, mostly the parts where monsters came out at you from nowhere.

Why let 1 review put you off buying a game? I think this looks good, lots of gore, some very positive reviews so far, so I'll be buying it.

People get far too upset about EG scores/reviews (that comments thread is a perfect example, as is people's reaction to EG's LBP review).

Thats exactly what i was thinking earlier, but didnt bother posting. The trailers make it look good, so i'm going to buy it. 7/10 is the worst rating it got so far...that should not put anyone off buying a game.

Sorry, I didn't post the EG review as a bad thing. For me anything over 6 is a good game. I don't agree with the current thinking that only a score of 9.95 or over is a good game. Look at the comments after their Little big planet review and that got a 9.

I'll probably get this, but as I was saying before, at the moment it doesn't seem to look like a survival horror game which is what it was marketed as. Maybe it has an atmosphere that the ads aren't showing well.

I believe the Europe release date is 10 days after the US one. Anyone want to bet on how badly this game will get pirated in just that 10 days?

How retarded are these publishers anyway?

    Gamespot

Would this be the same website that gave out two ten out tens in one year (MGS4 & GTAIV) and the same website which fired a reviewer for slating Kane and Lynch?

It's pretty hard to take your opinion seriously when you don't even know about the quota.

Have you checked all the other major reviewers who gave the same games you just stated the exact same score? Heres a few examples including eurogamer..

    gta

hmmm im picking up a pattern here, gamespot being wrong about a review???? must be all other reviewers so...

dead space is a game with little or unheard of background and a relitively small time developer getting a good score from an honest review.... its usually more honest when they don't have the finacial backing.

Whats wrong with two ten out of tens in one year ? I read Empire magazine every month and theres usually at least one 5 our of 5 film each month. 10 out of 10 doesnt mean perfection. Perfection is pretty much impossible. If that was the case, they may as well review games out of 9.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I don't give a wooden nickle about the percentage of '10's they hand out, I just believe that Gamespot are in the pocket of many noteworthy publishers & can't be trusted to give a fair and a honest review. The "Kane and Lynch" saga was the most recent example of this policy being exposed, but they and other sites like IGN.com are just not trustworthy sources of opinion.
