Have you a link or info about where you heard about it being used?

Dunno how it would be used for ab strength. A "tensiometer" is really just a calibrated spring, like a fishing weighing scale. You put a weight/force on the spring and it extends a certain amount, so put 100lb on it and it stretches 1ft, so if you can physically do the same, i.e. pull the spring apart the same amount you are also exerting 100lb of force.

You can stand on a weighing scale and loop webbing/rope under it, now pullup, if it goes from 75kg to 100kg then you are lifting the equivalent of 25kg.

Dunno how it would work for abs though, I can think of several ways but none are great.
