I've searched on the UC site but couldn't find this info...

What is the name of the arena? Area of Newry?
    What Time does it start?
Will you accept foreign currency (euros) on the door for tickets? I never got to the bank today?!

    Cheers

Good night of fights tonight. I missed a lot of the fights in the middle because I was in the back with the lads helpin warm up but what I did see was very enjoyable. Pissed I missed the Torres fight but it was very close to Phils fight.

Great venue and excellent production. A big thumbs up. Congrats to all involved in a really good show.

Yea we were right beside you guys for ages. We moved around to the other side of the curtain though cos Phils opponent was beside you guys so obviously didn't want him seeing the warm up etc. I was warming up with Phil Scollard. I'm the tall guy with shaggy black hair who was wearin the dodgy blue shorts (they were Phils not mine so they were a bit tight!!) :pac:

Kevin McAlonan won the main event, great to heare Kevin is back in the ring and on form.

Kevin was briliant and totally dominated and made it look real easy, gary morris won by triangle choke/gnp, he was out and gary hit him a few times to get the ref to step in, so i dont know what it was called as!

great show, well done to the organisers, this is my favourite promotion by a long way.

It was some setup. Massive warm up area. Beautiful cage. Two big screens.

The only thing that marred the night was a bit of crowd trouble by a (very) few idiots but I think the bouncers dealt with that efficiently and quickly.

Joe's knee is pretty bad today but he's had to go hobbling around town cos his missus wants to go shopping :D. The crowd were booing the fight at one stage because it wasn't a slugfest but I watched it again today and it was a great chess match. Damian had obviously done his homework on Joe and waited on him all the time which screwed up our game plan. We switched in the 2nd round and I thought Joe was starting to find his range a bit more often but the injury ended it so we'll never know how rd.3 would have gone. Damian was a worthy winner though.

Neil I saw those dodgy shorts alright. I'll say hi next time.

great show, well done to the organisers, this is my favourite promotion by a long way.

Totally agree. Best cage as I have said last year, best warm up area, plenty of staff who all know what they are doing, and the venue with the bleacher seats and the two big screens are superb.

Great fights to both referee and watch. Very proud of Phil who is back after a two year lay off though you woudnt know it, and now moves to 4-0 in Pro rules, and equally richie who has only 6 months jits training and followed game plan to the letter on his debut and an A class rules debut too.

Couple of things re promotion I would change, I would announce what class rules each fight is under, and explain them to the crowd. I reffed then switched with Peter and I sat in the crowd for a bit and people were asking about the rule difference, Its probably in the brochure but an announcement would help. I think as a whole we need to look at the no knees to the head standing in C class. Its a nightmare for both fighters and referees. From a sprawl or a guillotine position but not going for the choke, the obvious technique is knee to the head. Trying to land one on the body invariably contacts the head and yet again someone was d'qed last night for it. Either ban knees from c class altogether or allow them to all targets standing.

Great show though, well done Adrian etc.

I thought this show was far and away better than the first Newry event. Some really good match ups...was great to see Phil back and I had the honor of reffing his fight. Also the Damo/Joe match up I thought was grand,I think the two were well matched up and it was a shame that it didnt go the distance but at least Joe had the sense to stop before he got seriously injured.I saw the nuggets acting up at the side of teh cage but I just think they were a bit boisterous is all, they quietened down when the doorstaff went in and that was that.
All in all a good night, good facilities, smoothly run and no real injuries to talk of which is the important part.

He literally couldn't go on. He's damaged his medial ligaments with the last kick he took I could see his knee twist, probably cumilative from the ones in the first round. He has to get it assessed properly when he goes home but we had a guy look him today and he reckons it's bad enough. 6-8 weeks out.

Brilliant night, have not been to too many fights but this was by far the best setup I have seen. The cage looked great, a lot sturdier than some I have seen in the past.
Fights were all a very high standard. Unfortunately I missed the headline and Torres fights...

Show was brilliant. Really enjoyed it. The action replay on the screens was top notch.

I have one query. The fight C class fight was stopped due to a knee to head.

Was that adjudged to have been thrown on the gound? My understanding was knees to head while standing in semi-pro (c class) are allowed.

I was just a bit surprised when the guy who threw it lost the fight

Yea it was deemed an illegal knee to a downed opponent. The fella that got kneed had 3 points on the ground IIRC making it an illegal knee.

Fairly sure it was no knees to the head full stop in C. Think that was actually asked specifically in the rules meeting.

Its was discussed at a meeting on sunday with some promoters up north and it was agreed that they allowed while standing in C class.

If the guy was down with 3 points different story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭David Jones

According to the EFR amateur c class rules posted on the link below, there are no knees to the head at all in c class amateur rules. (not standing or on the ground) I was instructed that UC2 was being fought under EFR rules, I wasnt made aware of any meeting etc.

    http://www.fighttalk.co.uk

If you read through this thread you will see my opinion on knees to the head in C class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

At the rules meeting I clearly said that there was no knees to the head during 'c' class matchups. This rule was taken directly from the EFR site.It was asked for clarification from Shane Thomas and I reiterated the fact that knees to the head was not a legal technique for c class.
I also discussed the fact with David Patterson after the rules meeting.Shane had pointed out the same thing, that they were allowed in EFR match ups.Considering I took the rules from the EFR site I had to point out that it was not the case.
Now if the rules have changed since then I have not been informed of it.I agreed with Dave that either they should be allowed or they shouldnt at all. This is where the unified set of rules needs to come in.I have reffed on every show going in Ireland and every promotion have their own idea of how things should run.I have seen some ridiculous rules at shows that are nearly impossible to implement and yet the promoters deem it the refs fault when things go wrong.
Regardless,I never saw the fight but I was told that the knee came as the guy was grounded so it was a good call.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

We had a chat and a bit of a demo with this on Monday night in the gym. Most guys were 3 points on the mat whenever the knee to the head was a viable choice. The only time the head came down low and knees were the only option was up against the wall.

I'm inclined towards keeping the rule of none to the head but okay to the body for C, maybe banning them altogether in D where the fights are likelier to be sloppier.

In many ways I think a unified code of when a guy can fight B or even C class might sort this out. If a fella's had 3 or 4 D class bouts and is used to the adrenaline and the pressure than he might not be so inclined to lose the rag and knee willy nilly.

No I was just wondering at the time

Its not as if I was close enough :(

Plus I dont want any of my lads getting disqualified. Especially at our own show

Thats pretty much it. It was off the scramble and he hit him with a knee, he still had 3 points grounded. It was a good call.

No debate so, that's even him DQed from pro! The rule still needs to be looked at though.

For my show in December I'll consult the refs way in advance and use whatever rules they feel are the best, safest and easiest to ref. After the rules meeting on Saturday I heard a group talking about how the no knees to the head in C was stupid because of "the crowd", ie. it wasn't going to be entertaining enough. The crowd can blow a goat as far as I'm concerned if fighter safety is compromised, but there is a point there if the rules are different every show a guy goes to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

fighter safety is paramount as far as Im concerned.I dont answer to the crowd.A fighter wants to win thats understandable but its the refs responsibility to keep him from permanent injury or worse. If I think a fighter is in danger then I'll stop the fight.Thats it and I will take any abuse levelled at me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 dreadskin

i was the dqed fighter. to be honest i dont think there were three points. i went for thai clinch, and threw a knee. i was attempting to hit his solar plexus by pulling him down and in. i was not trying to get dqed, and feel very disappointed by the whole thing after two months of very hard training. however i presume we will just have to see the video...
    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭David Jones

I dont think your opponent had 3 points either, I disqualified you for kneeing him in the head which is illegal under c class rules regardless of the 3 point rule.
