Jury duty

I had no idea where to put this, so please feel free to move it. ;)

I've been summoned for jury duty. However, as a full time student I *think* I am excusable as of right. However, the legal mumbo jumbo is very confusing, and I'm not certain. I'm also not certain whether I need proof, like a copy of my student card, or an official letter from my college.
I'm sure I can find these things out by ringing the jury office, but wondered if any of you nice (I use the term loosely) people might have experience with this?
    Thanks in advance. ;)

Throw poo at the judge, that should get you off jury duty.

Tell them you don't believe in god and cannot be sworn in.

I got called for jury duty just before my exams a few years ago, I went to my the professor about it and he got the secretary to do up a letter saying that I was a registered student , etc, etc, etc, and that the jury duty clashed with my exams and suggested that I be excused. That sorted it out, I got a letter a few weeks later saying that under some section of some act, I had been excused...

You're a Northsider, so you probably know the defendant. Just tell them that.

Wait until the trial begins and when they bring in the person charged stand up, remove your flat cap, tug your forelock to the judge and say "Oi'm sorry sore, but oi' couldn't be classed as dat mans peer. He's well 'bove me". Then clump out in your muddy wellys.

Actually, Ive heard that atheists are allowed to participate, they just have to swear an oath (not on the bible). Im open to correction

You COULD claim your racist but that could very well back fire

My mother got called up for jury duty a number of times. Each time she would bring one of us (when we were age 0-10) and claim she didn't have anyone to babysit and couldn't participate on the day, Worked everytime.
When we eventually grew up, she borrowed my 5 year old cousin and used the same reasoning pretending that my cousin was her son. This worked

So maybe you can borrow a child off someone for an hour on the day and use the above reason

or just take one. It'll work too.

*shakes heads* No. It won't work.

Tell the ye read all the papers and as far as your concerned the cuns guilty, and ye reckon the death sentnce should be brought back
Nah; they'll just make the OP wait for much longer for another trial.

Or sell it and buy non refundable travel tickets. Either will work in getting you excused but only my suggestion gets you a holiday.

When I said this to the judge all I recieved was a strange look. However you could be right because I was told that I had been contested before she could say anything else.

Yeah, you just make a declaration but instead of using a bible you use the God Delusion.

    Okay, back on-topic:
"I've been summoned for jury duty. However, as a full time student I *think* I am excusable as of right."

What "right"? Why should you be excused? I doubt that you'll be any more inconvenienced than someone with a job, a child or <insert any number of damn good reasons>. If you have an exam, your lecturer will most likely make alternative arrangements, and if not then you can contact the county registrar and explain that you actually have a good reason.

Justice can be such an inconvenience, eh?

ED: Atheism, etc. is not suitable grounds for dismissal. *sigh* http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/justice/witnesses/the-procedure-for-being-a-witness

God you students are never happy... Since you sponge our taxes the least you could do to repay them is a couple of hours listening to the details of Mary & Jacintas garden dispute, which ended in the explosion of 7 caravans and a melted bounty bar...

When I got a jury duty summons I replied on the form that I wouldn't be in the country on the dates specified. Never heard anything back from them.

Tell them you think everyone is guilty until proven innocent.

Last time i got one i was looking for work so told them the possibility of jury duty could damage my chances of getting a job. It worked.

And book a ticket with a low cost airline for the dates should they ask for
evidence - just find the cheapest flight to anywhere on those dates. ;)

Having done a stint of jury duty in the past I can safely saw it was one of the
most boring and tedious weeks I've had. Most of those who end up on
jury duty are those without the means or resources to avoid it. I initially
felt I had a civic duty to sit on a jury but realised by the end that if I ever
end up in court and have a jury deciding my fate - I will not be 'judged' by
my peers and equals. From what I saw the average jury panel consisted
of the uneducated and unwaged. I'll do my utmost never to spend a week
    on jury duty again.

Personally that'd make me want to sit on a jury more than not, to make it more "balanced". I'd love to get called for jury duty, but think it's mostly because my job is currently doing my head in, and even parking violations would be a joy to sit through. :p

Two of my mates who are students, were called for jury duty. Both of them were removed at the defendants-solicitors request before the trial began

Its possible that solicitors will generally remove students during jury selection.
Imo students are more likely to throw a guilty vote and more aged citizens may say "Ah sure give him another chance" kind of thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

I would love to sit on a jury before I leave college... as when I qualify as a barrister/solicitor I'll be legally barred from ever serving jury duty.

Lawyers, judges, doctors, students in 3rd level education are all exempt or can request exemption. I'm sure many other professions are too (oil rig worker, pilot etc. etc.)

I have heard that if you wear a suit to the jury selection one side will definitely object to you (probably the defence!)

got called up for Jury duty. they sent a form along with it, so all i had to do was state my profession as full time student and where i was going. sent it back and never heard a thing before.

There should really only be judge only courts. All this direction by the judge and then let a jury of your peers decide is bollocks. The public are stupid for the most part and have no conception of legal principle. If I committed a crime I know who I'd like my fate decided by, and it certainly wouldn't be the public. It would be people qualified in law. Diplock etc...........

Just say you know the person.

They don't tell you what the case is until you go AFAIK. So you would still lose half a day showing up anyway. Besides I think you'll just be put back into the jury pool for the next case.

If you can't wriggle out of it before the day, just wear a t-shirt with "Shell 2 Sea" printed on the front. You can be absolutely guaranteed one side or the other will contest you.

I've heard from other law students that just sitting a law module can disqualify you. It seems strange that a knowledge of the law would make you less qualified (especially since in practice we're all legally required to know all of the law anyway), but there you go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,615 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Its worth doing once just to see how the system operates.
And they give you free meals in the Brazen Head (if you're on a Dublin case, doubtless the same setup elsewhere).

P.S. After the trial ends, don't go on the beer with any of your fellow jurors, get into a fight and end up being brought to the police station.

I believe that law students are *especially* exempt from jury duty... but I do not think you are under any obligation to disclose whether you are a law student or not.

I don't think it's the knowledge of the law per say - but that we know have "insider" knowledge of the system and its tricks and faux pas that the ordinary juror may not be aware of (certain evidence may not be legally admissible and be quietly stricken from the record but the law student would presumably notice this).

Indeed there could probably be a fear that the student could try to lead the other jurors by saying "I know criminal law and he is absolutely guilty/innocent etc." Maybe that upsets the notion of judgment by one's peers?

Having said all that, I would still love to have sat on the other side of the bench before starting to practise. Oh well, I may end up on the other side as a judge then :P
