To this day, I use minimal effects. I have a Pod XT Live, which handles the midi functions of the amp, as well as the odd bit of reverb or chorus I might use. Other than that, I've a Morley way pedal, a modded Ibanez Tubescreamer and an ISP Decimator. I ain't lackin' for tone, that's for sure. ;)

and what kind of music do you play?

I would have thought the mod for the rock and metal forum would have had some nasty big distortion pedal.

I was dead keen on a ts myself but trips to youtube didnt impress me much, too clean or summit, thinkin about sending my ds1 off for modding instead.

Why would he need a big nasty distortion pedal with a big nasty amp? :p

Tubescreamers are overdrive pedals, not distortion pedals.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

If you need a distortion pedal with an amp like this, you're doing something very, very wrong indeed. :p

Generally I play stuff like Dream Theater, Opeth, that kinda thing.

As for the TS, it's best as a clean boost, meaning that it's not something that creates distortion, but defines and pushes the distortion you already have. I'll just kick it in for leads, or to push the clean channel into some nice light breakup.

This'll give you an idea of the Engl Invader's 3rd channel:

For the heaviest tones I use, I'll run that channel with the gain about half way up. ;)

Yeah i knew that but didnt know what the difference was.
Thought that overdrive was more gritty than i actually was.

Sorry lads, a bit outta my depth here. Ive been playing for a few years but have only decided i wanted to be a gearhead recently enough.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Don't worry about it Brendan, everyone has had to learn about gear at some stage. When I started off playing, I thought all distortion came from pedals, not the amps themselves. I was clueless, but I learned about gear as I went on. ;)

Aye, I've seen a lot of Petrucci related videos. He really has astounding tone, never sounds bad for a second.

That pedal controller is a savage. Is there really a nuclear bomb button on it? :D

Might just go with a Rocktron All Access for my G-force
It will do me for my shows.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    I love midi. :D

It's just so fantastic being able to change everything at the same time with a press of a single button.

    *Hugs Pod XT Live*

Can i change the channels on my Marshall JVM and work the G-force all with the Rocktron at the same time.

That would be Petrucci esq, but with less skill.

Yep, JVM is Midi ready, so you can indeed change channels and effects at the same time. What are you using to switch it now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭-=al=-

once its midi enabled your set, its a lovely thing, all those 1's and 0's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭darrenw5094

The controller that came with the JVM for the amp channels and the index finger on the right hand for the G-force.

I am looking forward to the new toy.:)

Sweet. Which one are you going for?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭darrenw5094

The Rocktron All Access. At about €620 from USA before fricken tax.
They are a grand on Thomann....WTF Thomann???

Unless you could suggest something better.
Beringher (or whatever way it's spelled) is not worthy to control a G-Force.

I wouldn't pay that much for a glorified footswitch man. I mean, it's not so much a case of me recommending a better one, just more value. For comparison, I use a Pod XT Live, which works as a midi foot controller, as well as doing all the other things a Pod does. I know the Rocktron is probably extremely well built, but I just couldn't possibly justify spending that kind of money on it.

If you want to go for something sturdy, the Voodoo Labs Ground Control is one I've heard recommended. You can probably get that a lot cheaper than Thomann as well.

But seriously, it's not something that's going to affect your tone, it's not going to be in your signal path, so you don't really need an expensive pro one, and I've heard the Behringer ones are perfectly fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭darrenw5094

I don't want to sell myself short with the Voodoo one. I almost bought it a week ago, but thought it might do the job that i am looking for.

For the matter of an extra €150 or so, the Rocktron might be the best option, but it's expensive alright.

I want to use 4 channels from the Marshall (clean to lead) plus the effects, so i am not sure if the Voodoo is right for me.

On any given Midi foot controller, you'll generally have about 128 presets (possibly a lot more) that you can set up with any combination of amp channel and effects. The Voodoo Labs, Rocktron and even Behringer controllers all do the same thing, call up different presets when you press the appropriate button.

There's no way you'll be selling yourself short, or lose out on any functions, no matter what midi controller you go for. Some controllers have more additional features than others, but for the most part, if all you want to do is control your amp and effects, then I wouldn't spend too much on it.

    We need that pic man......
Although i have just copied and pasted your link into the browser and that is savage. Not one f**kin' guitar on show though......
I am counting 10 4x12 cabs plus the smaller cabs.

Maybe he uses a Harley Benton guitar....that would be funny...:D

Thats SteveVHT, he got a kind of infamy on the guitar forums for having such an awesome/ridiculous setup. He definitely doesnt play Harley Benton guitars, theres a pic of some of his guitars. Ernie Balls and Jackons and Ibanez etc.

He has good taste in guitars. That Music Man on the top right in photo one is the exact same as mine......great minds think alike....;)

Although i don't know why people that are loaded still buy Boss....some of their pedals are ok, some are attrocious.......

I think he has a Boss Noise Suppressor in pic #2.....WTF?

As far as I can see there is a Marshall JMP1 preamp, Engl 570 Preamp, VHT Valvulator Preamp, Mesa/Boogie 50:50 poweramp, and 2 x VHT 2:50 poweramps. I cant make out any of the other items :(

Head: "Would it even sound like a guitar any more after all those electronics? It's too much trouble in a live situation, too much scope for problems"

Heart: "I want it, I want to twiddle those dials, I want to turn ALL of those knobs to 10, I want it!"

Bank Manager: "Hahahahahahahaha, you want how much!!!!!"

I'm playing an MIA strat, SSS, Through a ceriatone bluesbreaker......

....It's almost your setup. Dont ya just love simple rigs :D.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Dont ya just love simple rigs :D.

No. I like my rigs like I like my bureaucracy, needlessly complicated and baffling to the average joe. :pac:

Seriously though, even a fairly big rig can still be simple, the rack setup in the first post is a very simple one indeed. I guess people are just daunted when a rig consists of more than what they're used to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

    Blues Deluxe => Ibanez Tube Screamer(TS9) => Bacchus G-Player
    :D
The simplicity of my "rig" is mostly down to the type of music i play...Blues! I mostly go for clean tones these days, nice and bright, but not too sharp. Love strats, whether they be fender bacchus or others, so long as they have those classic strat tones i'll be happy. For me anyway, simplicity is the key!
I'd actually love to have a play around with one of those massive rigs, haven't a clue what it all does, i suppose you're right Karl, seeing something like that i'm thinking , but i'm sure once you know what's going on it's savage
