Yet another weight loss advice thread!

So i, like so many others that i've read about on this thread, have decided enough is enough and i need to lose weight. I'm tipping the scales at just over 14 stone and i'm 5'10, so my BMI is bordering on 30.

My daily diet is something like this:

Breakfast - coffee, a buttered brown scone
Lunch - a sandwich/roll with various meats, cheese etc, bag of taytos
Dinner - Pasta/potatoes and mostly chicken.
Snacks - Bowl of cereal/toast/bag of taytos, i probably drink about 3 cups of tea a day as well

I don't really regard this as a totally terrible diet but i know i could cut down. I put on the weight due to 4 years of beer and **** eating in college!

I'm not a heavy drinker as such, might go on a session once every 2 weeks but my exercise is pathetic. I used to play soccer twice a week up til about 6 months ago but an old knee injury flared up and put a halt to that. I have an exercise bike in my room, which i rarely use, but if i was given a timetable of some sort i would use it.

I was giving serious thought to going to a gym (down here in Cork) and hiring a personal trainer...does anyone have any experience of this? Are they expensive?

All the diets i see seem very extreme, so anyone with any opinions please come forward!

    Thanks

I would suggest that you change your breakfast completely. I know its difficult to eat in the morning (i didnt eat in the morning for years) but i have found that if you force yourself to eat a breakfast you will eat less during the day.

Also after a few days of forcing yourself to eat a breakfast, it will become part of your routine again and your body will be calling out for it if you miss it.

I dont call it Breakfats any more, i call it Breakfeast.

    Very expensive.

You are eating to much starchy carbs (pasty, bread, potatos) and not enough fruits, vegetables, could also do with some more protein in there.

Get yourself a proper breakfast first of all, some oatmeal or similar healthy option. Replace those bags of tayto with some fruit. Lots of vegetables with dinner.

What you eat is only one part of it though, you need to start exercising. Joining a gym is a very good idea but I would personally not spend money on a personal trainer.

Way, way too much refined carbs, not enough protein or decent fats.

Try eating eggs for breakfast. I promise, you can scramble a couple of eggs faster than you make coffee.

Lunch: drop the crisps and the roll. Keep whatever meat or cheese etc that you normally put into your sandwich and instead with it with a huge green salad. You can buy bags of washed salad in any supermarket now, it's no work.

Dinner: chicken is fine, though I prefer steak. And salmon is great too. Reduce or replace the spuds and pasta with a lot of green vegetables. Things like broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, green beans, brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, celeriac, kale, mushrooms, aubergine, courgette, peppers, leeks, spinach, watercress, etc are all tasty, easy to cook and amazingly low calorie.

Stewed rhubarb is a great low cal dessert or snack. Top with some of the Tesco 0% fromage fraise.

Nuts and seeds are much better for you than crisps. You can buy small packets in most supermarkets. Try a couple of Ryvita and some cheese instead of the cereal. Or eat a tub of cottage cheese as a snack.

Don't worry you can have carbs. Brown rice and brown pasta are made of complex carbohydrates which are good for your health. Just try and watch your portion sizes(around a small heaped handful of rice or pasta is about right).

It's important that you don't deprive yourself of certain food groups as most dieters do, as depriving yourself of something only makes you want it more.

Personally I find that scrambled eggs with a good whack of herbs and black pepper to be the business in the morning.

Tastes good, quick to make (worth getting up the 5 minutes early to make them) and they keep me full for a good while as well.

Would fill you much better than a scone and a cup of coffee anyway.
