Trollers - what the hell do they get out of it?

Am I the only person who really doesn't see the appeal of trolling?

"Oh look, I've got a mild rise out of some people I don't know with a totally transparent and frankly risible attempt - go me!"

And, conversely, why do so many people feel compelled to write empassioned responses to what are clearly posts written by trolls? I'm thinking specifically of the five pages of "Ooh, you pig!" that followed the "What did I do wrong?" thread, which should have been locked after Thaedyl's intial reply, which pretty much said all that was required.

If it's totally transparent, you're doing it wrong.

I guess their parents didn't give them enough attention when they were kids and they troll because its an easy way to get attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,816 ✭✭✭Acacia

I think trolls are attention-seekers, basically. Though in some cases it's possible that they do actually believe the crap they are posting. As for people replying, well, some people enjoy a good argument (even if it is with a troll). For others, it's simply a matter of ''I'm not going to let him get away with saying that!"

Trolls are one of the worst things about the internet really. :(

Personally I don't troll. I just go on dating websites with stolen pictures and pretend to be a hot chick. Then I arrange to meet guys in public places and stand nearby taking pictures of them and laughing when they get stood by the hottie of their dreams.

That's not weird or anything is it?

Haven't you ever ripped the legs off a rabbit just to watch it squirm?

Presumaby because tolls lack the upper body strength to rip the legs off of real people, they enjoy watching the digital equivalent of squirming.

think about it. if you had some ignorant billy goats trampling over your bridge every morning, noon and night with their hooves you'd be pretty pissed too, and you would want to vent. I say leave 'em to it

    Exactly.

This is the interwebs. It can be fun knowing that someone somewhere is getting wound up for a pointless reason and it passes the time in a dull job.

It's like that picture that says:

    Wife: Honey come to bed.

Husband: I can't! *typing furiously on the keyboard*

    Wife: Why not?

Husband: Because someone IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET!!!!!!

I mean, the replies they get are usually just absolutely hilarious to trolls.

Look, trolling if done properly, is an art form. The best trolls are the ones you don't even think are trolls.

And secondly trolls exist for one simple reason, the majority of people on the internet are doing it wrong and think that the internet is serious business, when it's not.

    Hi, they're the fibonacci numbers.

    1st one is 1
    2nd one is 1

every one is the two previous added!

    1 + 1 = 2
    2 + 1 = 3
    3 + 2 etc...

    Exciting eh!

That's great. Try playing the first six as Lottos numbers though and see how far you get! :p

    three and five is eight...

A good troll is a quality read, better still when one by one everyone realises they've been had, all except the poor sap who continues to rise to the bait.

What did trolls do before teh interwebz?

Did they randomly walk around pubs, butting into conversations and making strange and bizarre claims... sometimes hurtful and derogatory?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

They ran the country and bought small islands. Sadly, they were far too good at the old trolling and nobody copped on.

No they used typewriters to type stupid shit and post it to people....

    Dreamed I was an Eskimo
    Frozen wind began to blow
Under my boots and around my toes
The frost that bit the ground below
It was a hundred degrees below zero...

    And my mama cried
    And my mama cried
    Nanook, a-no-no
    Nanook, a-no-no
    Don't be a naughty Eskimo
Save your money, don't go to the show

Well I turned around and I said "Oh, oh" Oh
Well I turned around and I said "Oh, oh" Oh
Well I turned around and I said "Ho, Ho"
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye
"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"
"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow

(Well, right about that time people
A fur-trapper (who was strictly from commercial)
Had the unmitigated audacity to jump up from behind my igloo (peekaboo) )
And he started into whippin' on my favorite baby seal
    With a lead-filled snowshoe)

    I said, with a
    Lead-
    Filled
    With a lead filled snowshoe
    He said, "Peekaboo"
    I said, with a
    Lead-
    Filled
    With a lead filled snowshoe
    He said, "Peekaboo"
He went right upside the head of my favorite baby seal
he went "whap" with a lead-filled snowshoe, and
he hit him on the nose and hit him on the fin, and he
that got me just about as evil as an eskimo boy can be. So I bent down
and I reached down, and I scooped down and I gathered up a generous
mitten-ful of the deadly YELLOW SNOW

The deadly yellow snow, from right there where the huskies go!

Whereupon I proceeded to take that mittenful of the deadly yellow snow
crystals and rub it all into his beady little eyes with a vigorous
circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mudshark in your mythology
here it goes, the circular motion, now Rub It!

    (Here Fido)

    And then
    In a fit of anger
    I pounced

    And I pounced again

    Great Googly Moogly!

I jumped up and down on the chest of the him

    I injured
    The fur trapper

Well he was very upset, as you can understand
    And rightly so, because the
    Deadly yellow snow crystals had
    Deprived him of his
    Sight

And he stood up, and he looked around, and he said

    "I can't see"
    "I can't see"
    "Oh, woe is me"
    "I can't see"

    "Well.....you know
    I can't see
    Nothin'"

"He took a dog-doo snow cone and stuffed it in my right eye
He took a dog-doo snow cone and stuffed it in my other eye
    And the husky wee-wee
    I mean the doggie wee-wee
    Has blinded me
    And I can't see
    Temporarily"

Well, the fur-trapper stood there, with his arms outstretched across the
frozen white wasteland, trying to figure out what he was going to do about
his deflicted eyes. And it was at that precise moment that he remembered
and ancient Eskimo legend, wherein it is written (on whatever it is that
they write it on up there) that if anything bad ever happens to your eyes
as the result of some sort of conflict with anyone named
    Nanook,
the only way you can get it fixed up is to go

    Trudging across the tundra
    Mile after mile
    Trudging across the tundra

Right down to the parish of St. Alphonzo

What do they get out of it? Money of course.

Boards.ie hires people to troll the forums because they will inevitably drum up traffic from people who don't realise they're just trolling.

The admins and smods used to do all the trolling personally but the site got so big that they had to outsource it to freelancers.

FACT. Tip my heel. No back answers.

I never troll but I occasionally fakepost and it's amazing how seriously people will take a completely absurd statement.

Not really, it might be a shared network and the troller can just move to another IP address.

I know a couple of guys who like to troll because they get a strange intellectual kick out of it. I'm sure there must an attention-seeking/anger element in there too, but they seem mostly to be interested in how people will react. Mind you, their efforts are a bit more clever and a bit more subtle than the usual "your favourite band sucks" kinda thing.
