Want to learning the tin whistle

I'e decided to start learning the tin whistle, but I dont have much of a clue where to start. What's a decent tin whistle to get and price range? I am in dublin so music shops in the city centre would be easiest.


Also does anyone hae any idea on what a good beginners book would be?

You can buy learn to play books for tin whistle that are good.

Can you read music etc?

I was going to suggest the Sodlums tin whistle tutor but I can not seem to find it,though my copy I bought about 20 years ago:)

As for tin whistles -

The generation tin whistles and feadóg ones are fine,
The colour doesn't matter but you want one in the key of D for start off with.
A lot of people play with these whistles for years or forever!

wow, didnt expect such a detailed reply, excellent stuff!

I cant read music at all and have never played any other instrument. would the lack of music reading be a major problem?

Nope not at all.

It would not be incredibly unusual in Traditional music circles for some good musicians not to be able to read music.

A lot of the tutorial books will explain to you about music notation and a lot show whistle notation (the pictures of dotes on a whistle)as well as normal music notation.
