    Howdy,
Im sure I seen something on the TCD website about free dinner and wine for students who score over 540 points. I heard they also take a photograph of the students with the provost and send it to your secondary school.
Anybody know when this takes place.
Im a total bum and need to avail of free dinners wherever possible!:p

It's not a free dinner, you get to go to a reception in November-ish IIRC, with some finger food and a jazz band. You also get a photo with the provost (or, in my case, the vice provost, grrr!).

Did you queue up for that? Thought it was a bit of a mill myself, and it was only the vice-provost.. pfff

Was expecting a bit more from the reception myself.
They crammed us in to the Dining hall, barely room to move.
We got cheap wine and some finger food.
They read out our names. People clapped at the end.
A jazz band played some music.
Photos with the vice-provost were available for those who took part in the bun fight to get there :P
Finger food wasn't too bad, and I suppose the recognition for doing well in the lc was nice. Worth going to for the hour that it takes I suppose.

Its 545 points I think tho.. I remember only just qualifying for it..

Yeah, there was little point really. But I suppose I was there and my parents and school principal wanted to, so...

You're confusing the entrance scholarship (of €254 in book tokens over 2 years) with the scholarship exams (schols) that take place in 2nd year. You only get the free dinners and accommodation on campus if you get the required results in the exams for schols...

No. Im aware of the scholarship exams. Free commons, free on campus accomodation and a salary of in between €200 and €300. Im talking about something completely different.

    My mistake then.

If you get an entrance exhibition and meet certain financial criteria you can get free dinners.

For €127 and a glass of wine? Pfft!

Work for Schols. That's worth it.

Do they really send a picture to your school? And do you not get the money if you don't attend the reception?

Yep, the schol rewards seem very nice indeed. Might give them a lash myself. Anybody know where I can view sample papers, just out of curiosity.

Short answers: No and Yes(but its not money).

Someone from your school is invited (Principal usually, but a teacher may go instead)
You have the option of getting your photo taken with the Provost (or vice-provost in my case). Im sure you could give a copy of that photo to your school, but TCD dont send one.

The money you refer to is €254 worth of book tokens. This is payed in 2x€127 installments, one in October of first year and one in October of Second Year.

The voucher is posted out to you along with a letter of Congratulations, Your Certificate and the invitation to the reception.

So is it all just sent out regardless? (for people who got over 540/545) Like we don't have to give our names or anything for this dinner/finger food thingy??

(I really can't imagine my principal at something like that!)

I got 540 points exactly, would I qualify for this? Or would have had to have gotten 545?

    To clear this all up

If you get over 540 points (or equivalent), you are awarded an entrance exhibitionership.

You get a wine and cheese reception in the Dining Hall, late November and 2 book vouchers worth 127 euro each, one for first year, one for second. You select the book shop from a choice of 3.

As always in TCD the answer is to be found in the calendar
    http://www.tcd.ie/calendar/assets/pdf/prizesawards.pdf

If you are of limited means and qualified as an entrance exhibitioner you should contact the office of the senior lecturer right this instant and complete the entrance exhibtioner sizar form if awarded it it tenable until normally the end of your second year and offers you free Commons only

The reason it terminates in second year is that is when you take the schol exams.

I'm pretty sure it's 545 points...it was for me anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭mathew

It can be said two ways. OVER 540 points or 545 points AND OVER

Peopel who got 540 points do not qualify
Those who got 545 points and above do qualify

So we don't have to apply for this? It'll just be done automatically on the basis of LC results?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭Peleus

yep, we'll get an email/ letter in november about it.

Just spotted now in the diary calendar that the Entrance Exhibition ceremonies will be taking place on November 24th, 25th and 26th. You should get a letter in the coming weeks telling you which night to attend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭Peleus

this is really annoying. i don't wanna buy any books now cos i can get them for free in november, but i think i need one of them now. and its a maths one that can't be taken from the library. gay :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭mathew

Pay for it now, then sell €60 of the voucher you get in November to someone....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭Peleus

but you cant sell part of a voucher. do you think if i went into hodgiss figgis that they'd let me have the book now and pay with my voucher later. or like pay for the book now and get my money back when i get my voucher?

Who is going tomorrow?! dress code? How long should it last?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

I'm going tomorrow, forgot about the dress code thing... Ugh. I'll bring in some decent-looking clothes to change into beforehand, because I normally slouch around college in whatever is at hand when I wake up. I suppose because of the photo with the Provost thing, you'd want to be looking in some way decent...
