had a browse through the orientation week schedule and seen a blank spot for wednesday night, if my memory is right, it had the orientation ball printed on the sechedule from the off last year, so im wondering if they've gone and gotten rid of the ball and just thrown the whole lot into the freshers ball,

anyone possess any knowledge on the matter?

It's still on, don't know where that blank spot came from, but it's down for Wednesday 24th September, with Freshers Ball a week later

There is none. Whatever you casually wear going out is fine.

yep, sure looks like a weird text deal thingy... Can't remember anything being like that before, but I suppose it's fairer on the people who may not be in DCU on monday etc...

Oh and don't forget the theme!!! The silver screen, choose your film character of choice. Just Say NO to lazy casual clothes!

    As from the link above...
It is your chance to dress up as your favourite character from the moviefilms, from Napoleon Dynamite to Don Corleone to Mary Poppins. Is Mary Poppins cool yet? Oh well, she is in my world.

...so, silver screen in this case means the "big screen", any cinema film really, and does not refer to films just from the early life of the film industry .

I suppose Napoleon Dynamite would be a good choice for me, wouldn't need a costume :pac: Perhaps i need nerdier glasses, longer hair and a different shirt bit am still close enough lol

Having a theme night for any ball other than Hallowe'en and the Summer Ball is just gay. Why can't they just do the lock and key ball again?

or have proper black tie balls like all the other colleges

:DAh i think the themed ball is a good idea, gets everyone motivated about it and everyone puts a bit of effort into dressin up and thinking about their outfit. Sure it's only for a laugh like...:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭jennyq

All I can say is....... The Blizzards woohoo, 2nd time in the space of a week seeing them :D:D Temptation to wear my Blizzards t-shirt.... but I suppose I should make at least a little effort regarding the theme!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 247 ✭✭Diarmaid07

themed balls/parites are fun. It's always good to dress up and have a laugh. Black tie balls would be boring so close after the debs, infact, some people are missing this for their debs!! (ciara!)

    summary:

    black tie = special events.

fancy dress = everythign else =D

    There are...

    exactly

I think it's nice to see them coming up with new ideas for themed events rather than rerunning the same ones over and over. Personally, I'm still waiting for a Grease themed Summer Ball.

At the same time, fancy dress can put a lot of people off the events, I guess. I'd really like to go to the Freshers Ball, especially since Fight Like Apes are playing, but self-consciousness might well prevent me from dressing up as a superhero.

I find that dressing up helps relax me. I'm really conscious about my image, and dressing up as someone else helps me leave that behind myself for the night =]

also, running around as some w4nker from TV helps break the ice somewhat I'd say :pac:

    I agree.
With any luck I'll be able make it. I got a costume and everything! Anyone got any suggestions for what I should do between 3-8? Hopefully I'll meet some people to hang around with, but if not, I don't like the idea of bummin' about by myself for 5 hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 jenfiction

I'm sure there'll be a few people hanging around after but if worst comes to worse you could go to the cinema in Omni? It'd be a shame to waste that costume :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭DowneyBookGirl

Yeah. I spent a good half hour putting together an "Hello my name is" sticker with the Juno logo from the dvd and an orange and white background.

.... now that I've just typed that I realize how sad it sounds, but god dammit it was worth it.:p

Anyone have any idea if there'll be a good crowd? Or if anyone on here is going? Hopefully others will be dressed up. I ain't going in there like a big pregnant idiot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

Well there was a great crowd last night, so I'd imagine it'd be the same if not more tomorrow night since the Blizzards are involved. I'll be honest with ya, not a huge amount of people actually dressed up for the cowboy night (bout 10-15% at a guess) but that shouldn't put you off, could change for tomorrow!

Before I forget, wherebouts can we collect our tickets? Somewhere in the Hub is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 jenfiction

I think (hope) more people will be dressed up tomorrow. I'm dressing up anyways! It's a bit of craic.

I'm actually not sure where to get a ticket at all..

You have to txt "events" to a number I forget and they hold a ticket for you under that number. It says on the txt where to collect it but I deleted it by accident.

The Blizzards plus special guests welcome you to your first DCU Ball- Awh.... Prepare to get disorientated! (see what I did there?!).

Not sure if you’ve noticed just yet but we like our themed nights here in DCU. Any excuse to dress up really. And Balls with bar extensions (woop woop!) well that just means prolonging the fancy dressed shenanigans. And the theme for The Orientation Ball 2008 will be…. Ba Ba DaDAAAA!!! -The Silver Screen. It is your chance to dress up as your favourite character from the moviefilms, from Napoleon Dynamite to Don Corleone to Mary Poppins. Is Mary Poppins cool yet? Oh well, she is in my world.

So! Long story short, The coolest band in the country right now will be here to entertain us and laugh at our deadly costumes. MAKE SURE!!!! to get your invite early, they are free, but they are limited. Text “EVENTS” TO 087 7730000 and toddle on up to the SU reception upstairs in the HUB, show them your invite on your phone and Bob is you fathers brother, you’re in.
