Ok, it's exactly 10:31PM, I want to get a bottle of wine and in this nanny state kip that I live in, I can't. Am I the only person thinking that this country has gone mad lately??? What is wrong with wanting to buy a bottle of wine at this time??? Christ, this annoys the hell out me, you can't scratch your arse these days and there is a law against it...

I got my wine before ten. Yes its annoying but its not the end of the world. Although maybe if you are sober and really don't want to be it is a problem. Might I suggest illegal drugs?

So when the off licences closed at 11:30 before, did you not suddently decide at 12 that you wanted wine then bemoan the state of the country on the internet?

Or is this specifically a 10:30 based issue?

At least you'll know to have a bottle in in future.

TBH I don't really see what the new closing time will do anyway, it's not as if all the people out there who get that drunk (presumably the crowd it's meant to target) only buy alcohol from 22.00 to 22.30. It isn't going to solve anything.

I can kind of understand it during weekdays, but Jesus, it's saturday, it's peacetime, what on earth is achieved by closing an off-licence at 10.30, it's just pure daft?

Not really an issue to be honest.

All you really need to do is stock up earlier.

In fact I think nanny state is a pretty cool guy eh passes drnikng laws and doesnt afraid of anything.

Only a politician would ever think that closing off alcohol sales earlier would reduce drunken behaviour.

Pretty sure if you went to a pub for a takeaway you'd still get served. I've heard of chinese resturants in Galway that sell booze at all hours now as well, although will prolly be a bit more expensive. If you are sober and don't want to be its totally worth it imo.

Consider yourself lucky you don't live in Swededn. The off-licence opening hours there are ridiculous:

    Mon - Wed 10.00 - 18.00
    Thurs - Fri 10.00 - 19.00
    Sat 10.00 - 15.00
    Sun CLOSED

The state owns all the liquor stores, and in some places where there isn't one you have to order from the local agent and your booze should be delivered the next day. Why haven't they all emigrated by now?

Might explain the recent growth in popularity of Kopperburg over here then, must have made too much of it and couldn't get rid of it :pac:

Not really an issue to be honest.

Why is there always a spate of posts in these kind of threads defending this country's bizarre legislation? Usually along the lines of the above quote, or 'why didnt you go earlier' or 'smoking is bad for you anyway' or 'move country. There is NO excuse for this country's pubs/offies closing earlier.

It's sad to see so many people pandering to Fianna Fails blatant sanitisation . I for one am extremely worried about the route this country is going down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭syklops

there is nothing I hate more than pandering!!!!

Seriously, we need to do something about these restrictive laws. It started with carrier bags, then alcohol, soon we will be taxed on the air we breath.

To the OP, I am in D4, and have a bottle free. If you are still in need, and you are nearby, PM me and we will make a deal.

Seriously though is anyone else interested in protesting against this daft law?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

Chargin for carrier bags is a great idea, not least because there isnt half as many floating around the place.

People take free stuff for granted.

Everyone meet at the off licence at 4 tomorow afternoon and buy all their drink, that'll show them.

buy your wine in bulk for a whole year from some wholesaler or other country where it's cheap.

or make the stuff yourself. that way you don't need to deal with or be affected by this mainstream crap.

Next thing I'm gonna have a drill sergeant waking me up at 5:30AM, making me do 200 press up's before force feeding me a salad for breakfast. This country makes me want to throw up, I'm sitting here looking out at a green in the estate, there are a gang of kids knack*r drinking in the corner of the green and here am I and I can't get a drink, no wonder people start taking heroin!

That just means that the local kids are better organised than you when it comes to buying their drink.

Well thats wonderful Thank you for giving us this little iota of knowledge. I do have a question for you though. What if you work until 10pm???

Beleive it or not in this modern age of ours some people work outside of the 9-5 shift. Network managemet centres, technical support, medical professionals, police, army, off license employees, the list is endless. If they finish at or after 10pm, what do they do? Do they not deserve the option of a drink when they finish work? And before you ask, yes I work outside of the 9-5 schedule. This affects me, and I feel strongly about it.

+1, I'm going to set up a delivery service for out of hours service! I've discovered a loop hole in the law, my local off licence will deliver drink to you provided that you have ordered it before 10AM. I've a cool idea, I'm going to set up a website where you can buy credits (1 credit = 1 Euro), and you keep this money in your online account. Say you top up with 20 Euro. You can then order alcohol up to the value of 20 Euro and I'll deliver it to your door! Once you've paid for your drink(have credit in your account and selected online your requirements), before 10AM, the transaction has been made and I'm just providing a delivery service. ya see God never closes one door before opening another!!! :D:D:D

I dont agree with that new regulation myself on the grounds that it was introduced to curb boorish drunken behavior.Well put simply-it wont. The reason being -youll always find an idiot in any given place or situation be they drunk or otherwise.Closing the off-licence a bit earlier wont change a thing.

You think 10:30 is bad or the times in Sweden!!

Welcome to Norway, its hell for me, where you can only buy beer in the supermarket.

    Opening Hours:
    Mon-Fri: 10am-8pm
    Sat: 10am-6pm
    Sun: Forget about it!

You can only buy wine and spirits in Goverment run Off-License's called 'Vinmonopolet', there usually hidden in some back corner of a town, with no windows. They put everything you buy into black bags, so people cant see whats in the bag !!

    Opening Hours:
    Mon-Fri: 10am-4pm
    Sat: 10am-2pm
    Sun: Forget about it!

Nothing worse on a Saturday, its gone past 2pm and a friend invites you over for a season, you fancy some wine or a bottle vodka, guess what, your sh*t out of luck.

The other alternative is to go to the Pub and pay between €8-€10 for a pint, €20 for a cocktail, your wallet will be very empty very soon.

For this reason Norwegians dont generally go out till after 12 midnight because it would be too expensive to drink all evening in the pub. This behaviour has actually become kind of part of their culture, they usually always have a session in someones house until 12am before heading out to the clubs, its called a Vorspiel, directly translated it means, foreplay;) So most Saturday nights you can here loud music and sessions all over the place, people dont really seem to mind the noise either, i think its just accepted because of their strict drinking laws.

Maybe this is the Road Ireland is heading down??

I'm not leaving for anywhere. I do think it is my right to ask for a better country. So I am seriously asking this board to consider a protest against this. In terms of what type, I think we need to get numbers together, and march up kildare street, blocking the taxi's getting up there, and bring our concern to the taoiseach.

Work 24/7 syklops, can't go buy a drink for later? Since you probably won't be drinking on your own nobody could get it for you?

So you to work to whatever hour, buy a drink and go home and drink it? On your own? With work buddies? When all your pals are in pubs and clubs? And an hour has made all the difference?
I have worked regularly until 3am/4am and never had a problem getting drink ever. Then again I am not lazy and bought some before I 'needed' it.

I nipped out twenty minutes ago (ten to one am local time) to get some beers from the local kebab place. Might do it again later - he's onpen til 2.30. I can get the metro to the centre if I want something stronger.

    I do NOT miss Ireland!

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I agree. If they closed at 4.30am somebody would complain about being inconvenienced. That's just the way it is.

What about the times when I can't sleep and wouldn't mind having a new book to read at 2am, but I can't buy one because all the bookshops are closed. Should I organise a march on the Dáil demanding that Easons becomes a 24 hour bookshop to cater for all the insomniacs of the country?
