So I got my letter today telling me who my tutor shall be. What's the story with them? What will we find out if we choose to see them during Fresher's week?

Also, just curious, approximately how many students is each tutor responsible for?

I think some tutors have more than others. Not sure on the numbers but it can be several... there's only so many staff and lots of students, although I do believe that postgrads don't have tutors (unless that's been changed).

They can be an advocate for you, a good person to chat to about advice, someone who can submit appeals/transfer forms/whathaveyou for you. I unbelievably recommend meeting your tutor at the start of college. You might not need them but if you did you will at least be able to recognise them, and if you're shy you'll have some relationship with them, although minor (rather than having to meet a complete stranger, I mean). It would add to your stresses at troublesome times having to meet a stranger, instead of meeting someone you've seen before. And most of them are damn nice people who would give you advice throughout college. Hell, I ended up going in to meetings with my tutor.

So it's all for your benefit, and like everything else in college take advantage of that.

Some info on a previous thread here: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054993444

My tutor is one of my lecturers last year and the coming year, so it's good to be able to recognise them is you ever need them

So do we have to make an appointment or just turn up at their door? There's alot of meetings and stuff to go to isn't there? :D

Is there an e-mail address or some way to contact them? Or was there an appointment set up for you?

    If not, check out peoplefinder.tcd.ie

There's supposed to be something in your freshers' pack about times? If not, find their room and have a look- mine was missing for first week of term, had times up on his door for us to meet him

The letter says 'your tutor is available to meet with you at the following times' and then gives a few different days. There's a phone number and an e-mail address. Confusing stuff! :)

We don't need appointments as far as I can see.

It says "your tutor is available to meet with you at the following times:

    Monday 29th September 9.00 - 13.00
    Tuesday 30th September 9.00 - 13.00
    Wednesday 1st October 9.00 - 13.00
    Thursday 2nd October 9.00 - 13.00"

It gives a room too, and also e-mail address and telephone number

Ah, someone beat me to it

Anyone know of Dr. James Wilson from the Zoology dept? All this stuff is so exciting! :pac:

I got my letter about my tutor today as well. I was given three time slots to meet him during Orientation Week. I'm just wondering do I have to email him to inform him which of the three time slots suit me best?

Tutors are staff members, not postgrads so it hasn't been changed. Luckily for me!

Ahhh your tutor is Jim Wilson!! He is so lovely, Scottish accent, really friendly - I'd say he'll be a great tutor, he seems like he'd be really nice if you had any problems. I'm a Science student you see, so I had him for Bio 2 when I was in second year

are they aware of us or do we just hatch from the egg and say.. tutor??

Don't worry, they are aware of your existance! My tutor sent around an e-mail in the first week with a list of times to meet him. A bit stupid really, considering I registered on the last day of freshers week and only got my e-mail account then! I had already spent half an hour searching for his office in the dodgest part of trinity (beside the rifle club entrance).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 740 ✭✭✭steveone

good stuff. I didn't know there was a dodgy part of trinity ha ha !

Indeed, there's nothing actually dodgy about it, but agreed the ambience there is less than inviting. Have you ever been inside that rifle club? It's like a hobbit's cave :)

Indeed, I have not! I joined it, I know the rangemaster and yet I never bothered my arse to go down and shoot! I heard they got some really good couches in, I might take a trip down this year...

Lincoln place is where the car entrance is, down the science end of college... If you look at the map of campus it is in the bottom right hand corner, between the Moyne Institute and the Genetics building/general science building. I don't know where the office would be though! Do you know what department he is in?

Aw yeah he's lovely, like I said I'd say he'll be really helpful! Welcome to Science, have you decided yet what subjects you're taking?

Incidentally, do they deliberately try to match tutors from the same area as your course? As in, to Science students always get Science tutors, or could an English and History student get a tutor from a Science department?

I think they try to keep tutors and students within the same faculty. I have an engineering tutor yet I am a science student. Same faculty though.

My only suggestions would be to do what you think looks interesting, and bear in mind what you'll need for any moderatorships you might want to do. For example, if you're thinking of doing Biochemistry, you need Chemistry in first year at least. For me anyway, I definitely wanted to do Biology and Chemistry but wasn't sure if i should do Maths or do Maths Methods and Geography/Geology (I think the subject choice system is different now) I decided that since I had struggled with higher Maths for the Leaving Cert, and didn't need it later on in the degree, I'd do Maths Methods and Geography/Geology. I'm really glad I did, as I ended up loving Geology and that's what I'm doing now. You can always talk to Dr. Wilson about it anyway, you'll probably meet him before you officially choose your subjects! And your choice isn't completely set in stone once you hand in that form, they don't mind people switching to different subject combinations, although obviously the earlier you switch the easier it is to catch up.

Oh and if you're interested in Geology look out for the Joly Geological Society stand during Freshers' Week, there's a high chance I'll be on the stand! [/shameless plug]

Ask him about his Llamas and peruvian chickens!!

He's a nice, slightly antiquated lecturer, who will drive your class nuts all through first year. Having you tutor that close to your degree can be a good thing and it can have disadvantages. If you go on to do bus/pol, sociology/politics it's grand, he won't take any classes after first year, or after second if you do BBS. However if you do do Economics, particularily Single Honours you may find that you have several conflicts of interest.

My tutor is in the political science department and I do single honour political science. I get on with him quite well and this year when he knew I had a lot going on he cut me a small amount of slack in his course. However next year he is the dissertation co-ordinator for polsci, and second corrects each dissertation. So I'm switching my tutor as it's just too many options for support all closed off in one place.

I think your tutor is suppsoed to come from your faculty but not from your school if possible. This is of course quite difficult in BESS/Science/Engineering.

If you want to change your tutor at any point in college go to the sneior tutors office. YOu have to have approached the other lecturer yourself before hand.

He's quite decent, I've heard good reports from those who have him as tutor. He's head of the anatomy department and you will have a couple of lectures from him throughout first year (mostly on embryology/human development), although you'll see a lot more of him in second year. He's also one of the four examiners for the end-of-year anatomy vivas.

I don't know how great an idea it is to be asking for opinions on a public forum about specific members of staff. I mean these people aren't exactly in the public eye and its all well and good while we're posting positive messages, if someone asks about the tutor I had in first year my comment isn't going to be positive. While I don't have any time for the guy (and btw I'm far from alone) it wouldn't be fair to slate him in public to people who've yet to meet him.

Very nice man, physics foam research. German, has earrings and dresses in pretty odd clothes (platforms, leather trousers, pokadot bow-tie). Had a band called "Das Glitch" with a few of his postgrads before they graduated where he played (I think it was) an electric mandolin and sang. They'd always play in the student battle of the bands competition. I recall an Einstein centenary seminar with him, where he suddenly jumped up on the table, producing a ukulele from nowhere, and burst into song.

If you read back the thread you will see that people have already said that your tutor need have nothing to do with your course.

Many people have tutors outside of their course and peole change to tutors outside of their courses and vice versa. Your tutor is your advocate in college, they just need to be good at supporting you and at times fighting your corner.
