Thought I'd start a thread on this especially as my club Padraig Pearses are in both Roscommon Senior Hurling and Football Semi-Finals. First up is the Football this Sunday where we take on arch rivals Clan na Gael whom we have never beaten in the championship and we are attempting to win the title for the first time. The other semi-final sees Western Gaels who beat defending champions St Brigids in the quarter-finals take on rivals Castlerea. Should be interesting.
In the Hurling both ourselves and Four Roads have qualified for the semi-finals with defending champions Athleague needing to win against local rivals(there is a theme here) Tremane this weekend to stay in the championship. An interesting and nervous month ahead.

It's to be replayed next Saturday, AFAIK.

Well we beat arch rivals Clan na Gael in the Semi-finals quite easily in the end by 8 points, an historic day as we hadn't beaten them in the championship for 40 years and lost some heartbreakers when Clan lost 4 All-Ireland club Finals in the 80's. Could be in 2 senior Finals this year with the hurlers going well also.

Thanks Kojak - just heard it on RTE Radio. Was waiting on Corofin for 3k, ah well!

The Dublin Senior Club Championship is in full swing again and round 2 will be concluded with the last fixture being my club and All Ireland Club Champions St Vincents taking on St Sylvesters in Balgriffin on Tuesday night at 8:30

All winners from round 2 go into the last 16.

Kilmacud Crokes struggled past Raheny with Vaughan scoring 6 points from frees while Ciaran Whelan picked up one or two knocks which curbed his influence on the game.

Naomh Mearnog (Shane Ryans club) were well beaten by Ballyboden St Endas (Conal Keaney and Collie Moran club) today in O Toole Park.

    Other winners from round 2 were Erins Isle,Whitehall Colmcilles,Round Towers Clondalkin,St Brigids,Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruaidh,St Marys,UCD, Ballymun Kickhams,Fingal Ravens,St Peregrines,Lucan Sarsfields and Na Fianna.

Bride Rovers against Sarsfields in the Senior Hurling Champ Final in Cork. Only two of the Cork squad playing in the final, Fraggie and Brian Murphy.

It says a lot about the state of Cork Hurling when I team like Bride Rovers get to a senior final. They got their on merit and fair play to them, but they are a small club with few stars, play negative, aggressive and cynical hurling and haven't a player beyond Brian who would come close to the Cork squad.

Hopefully Sars will beat them, although they are hardly the most impressive team in the county themselves.

Far more locally, happy to see Carrignavar hammer Killeagh in the East Cork Junior A Hurling Champ and I hope to win the county and go intermediate.

Corofin will probably hammer them in the replay. Caherlistrane have probably had their chance. Will you still get the 3k if Corofin win the replay?

    Draw made last night for the Tipp hurling QF's - Loughmore v Cappawhite, Kildangan/Moycarkey v Toomevara/Burgess, Roscrea/Colounty Rossmore v Ballingarry/Mullinahone and Golden/Thurles Sars v Drom/Ballybacon

Of the outstanding last sixteen games on form it would be expected that Kildangan, Toom, Sars and Drom should progress and the other two are too close to call but slight preference to Roscrea and Ballingarry.

All in all the semis should contain Loughmore, Toom, Drom and possibly Ballingarry - now just watch everyone of them predictions crash and burn, hopefully Kildangan can be the ones to upset the odds ;)

As usual. No wonder we can't win an All Ireland. The whole county's players are left idle for the sake of the county team.

What's it like in other counties, paritcularly successful counties? Are the county hurling and football championships in Cork or the hurling championships in Clare and Kilkenny and Tipp suspended while the county teams are still competing?

No. Kilkenny usually run their hurling championship throughout the Summer and it obviously hasn't done them any harm.

Galway are the worse culprits for abandoning the club championship. Surely after 20 years of failure it might be time for a rethink. Jesus it's not like Galway actually play that many competitive intercounty games anyway.

That's what I was thinking. I'm from Galway and am used to waiting around til September/October for things to resume. Used to find it very annoying trying to maintain interest at training with no matches to look forward to.

And the Kilkenny panel. Would they play with their clubs during the summer? If they do, I'm not surprised we're not winning when our competitors are playing matches and keeping match fit while our lads train as a panel, away from their clubs, playing an occasional challenge match with other counties behind closed doors.

The hurling board in Galway are awful plebs. Not just because of that.

It was a good game Jackbhoy and in actual fact apart from the first few minutes when Vinnies went 3 points up to no score, they didn't really get going until the resumption of play after half time when Mossy Quinn put the game beyond doubt with 2 goals in the space of a minute and a half.Up until then,Sylvesters had settled into the game and kept close but the experience of Vincents was overwhelming.Diarmuid Connolly played really well and Ruairi Traynor was seen in multiple positions challenging and collecting ball.Tiarnan Diamond also gave a great display and Hugh Gill was solid at the back.

However, once Mossy started to put over frees and 45s for fun,Slyvesters started to play dirty and if I recall correctly,Willie Lowry may have been hurt.Connolly was taken out of twice as well.A lot of people thought that Sylvesters may cause an upset but I knew it wouldn't be the case.I think a lot of people were guilty of looking into Syls underage structure and the fact that many thought Vinnies were still hungover fro last year but the hunger to retain is still very much there and evident down the club.

I think the two most impressive teams thus far from what I have seen are Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruaidh and St Vincents.I haven't seen Ballyboden but apparently they got the job done against Naomh Mearnog without Conal Keaney so I won't count them out yet.Crokes looked very average against Raheny and would have been beaten well by Vinnies,Plunketts or Brigids.

Balgriffin is a lovely venue in a rural setting. Its funny to think that you can walk down the laneway road entrance, turn right and walk past Campions pub and be in the Dublin suburbs so quick.

I was more concerned that they'd be hungover from Friday night, although I'm sure they all abided by the no boozing ruling :)
They're well capable of winning it again of course but just get gut feeling from few of lads that same intensity isn't there as last year, hope I'm proven wrong as have adopted them as my dublin team over last 4 years but we'll see....

The senior Hurling final is on this sunday I think, or else the sunday after, and the football is fairly advanced as well. So no I would say.

The "Preliminary Quarter Finals" (Such an absolute bollocks they've made of the Championship system, I think there are teams still in it who've lost 3 games) of the Galway Hurling Championship.

    Saturday
    Gort 0-16 0-14 Carnmore
    Liam Mellows 1-19 0-9 Kiltormer
    Tommy Larkins 0-15 0-19 Loughrea

    Sunday
    Craughwell v Sarsfields
    Athenry v Beagh
    Clarinbridge v Ardrahan
    Portumna v Castlegar
    St Thomas v Kinvara

Can't see any major surprises tomorrow, expect our lads (Portumna) to win, Craughwell, Athenry, Clarinbridge and St Thomas' should be the others.

Loughrea are very lucky to be still in it, injury time free for a draw - Players headed in thinking it would be a replay, ref called them back out to play extra time and they ended up winning by 4 points.

    Draw made last night for the Tipp hurling QF's - Loughmore v Cappawhite, Kildangan/Moycarkey v Toomevara/Burgess, Roscrea/Colounty Rossmore v Ballingarry/Mullinahone and Golden/Thurles Sars v Drom/Ballybacon

Kildangan, Toom, Sars and Drom all obliged as predicted, but the two tight games actually went the other way with colounty and mullinahone winning

    Portumna 2-18 1-13 Castlegar
    St Thomas 0-14 1-15 Kinvara
    Athenry 1-17 2-17 Beagh
    Clarinbridge 1-15 0-8 Ardrahan
    Sarsfields 1-13 2-14 Craughwell

Athenry being knocked out by Beagh is a pretty big shock out wesht here.

St Vincents dished out a comprehensive hammering to Parnells.Diarmuid Connolly wasn't playing.Final score was 3-15 to 0-06.

So the Dublin Quarter Finals are

    St Vincents v Thomas Davis
    Kilmacud Crokes v UCD
St Marys v Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruaidh
Ballyboden St Endas v Ballymun Kickhams

I think we are reasonably happy with the draw.Thomas Davis are an excellent league side and to see them in the quarter final might be a sign that they are transferring that form into the championship.I think we will have 4 or 5 points to spare over them.We look as sharp as we did last year.

Plunketts should get over Marys I'd imagine. The intercounty contingent is back in full gear and Plunketts have a very decent right corner forward who can take near impossible placed kicks over the bar.

Kickhams knocked out last years beaten finalist St Brigids.I said from the outset that Kickhams could be the dark horse for the Dublin title. However,Boden are going very strong as they just beat Naomh Mearnog and Na Fianna. So this one is a tough one to call for me.Bodens experience may win out here though.

I think Kilmacud Crokes could be taken by UCD.That is the assumption I am making if they play like they did against Raheny. If Vaughan has a bad day,Kilmacud may fold but I don't know too much about UCD this year and what bangers they have on their team this year so for once I'll be up for Crokes.....I'm off to wash my mouth out with soap now.

    Quarter-Final stage now in the Galway Hurling Championship. Line-up looks like this;

    Liam Mellowes v Beagh
    Kinvara v Gort
    Loughrea v Craughwell
    Portumna v Clarinbridge

Fancy Mellowes-Kinvara-Craughwell-Portumna to make up the semi final quartet.

The final round of fixtures in the group stage of the Wexford SFC are this weekend. Most interesting game for me is Castletown vs Horeswood, the winners of that game make the quarter finals with reigning champions Clongeen already having gone through from that group.

27/09/2008 KILANERIN -V- FETHARD Bellefield Syl Doyle 5.00
27/09/2008 CLONGEEN -V- ST. MARTINS Grantstown Damien Donovan 5.00
27/09/2008 BALLYHOGUE -V- ADAMSTOWN O' Kennedy Park Niall McDonald 5.00
27/09/2008 CASTLETOWN -V- HORESWOOD Wexford Park James Owens 5.00
28/09/2008 DUFFRY ROVERS -V- SHELMALIERS Bellefield Noel Whelan 3.30
    28/09/2008 STARLIGHTS -V- SARSFIELDS Monamolin Eddie O' Sullivan 3.30

28/09/2008 BANNOW/B'MITTY -V- HWH BUNCLODY Wexford Park David Jenkins 3.30

The SHC is at the quarter final stage. The games are to be played the weekend starting the 4th of October.

Cushendall took Antrim SHC beating Loughiel (who have now lost six finals in a row), final score was 0-15 to 0-6. St Galls claimed their seventh Antrim SFC title in eight years, beating Lamh Dearg 0-15 to 0-10.

Portumna 2-11 0-15 Clarinbridge Athenry Qtr. Final
Craughwell 1-15 2-15 Loughrea Athenry Qtr. Final
Gort 2-19 2-12 Kinvara Loughrea Qtr. Final

Our lads (Portumna) were lucky by all accounts, got a goal in the last 3 minutes to more or less win it.

So its Portumna-Loughrea-Gort-Liam Mellows in the semi's.

@ kraggy: Dunno mate wasn't at the game.

Hard to see Portumna being stopped, although it sounds like they had a close call in the Clarinbridge game.

Corofin V Cortoon in the Galway football final.

Corfin's county players/panelists would be Kieran Fitzgerald, Damien Burke, Gary Sice, Alan Burke and Michael Comer. They also have Kieran Comer who used to be on the county team and played in the under-21 final against Dublin a few years ago.

Cortoon currently have nobody on the county panel although they do have Derek Savage who played for Galway for many years.

Corofin should be too strong for Cortoon. They won't be All-Ireland contenders though. They have an excellent defence but don't quite have enough class up front to go all the way.

Yeah very much so! The ref could have a busy day if it is Loughrea v Portumna as there's surely no love lost between them at this stage and Portuman will be fired up for that one I'd say. Portumna are undoubtedly the better team and will want to prove it on the scoreboard, which I've a feeling they will. Gort are going well though and could certainly beat Loughrea although I think Port would be a step ahead of them.

Didn't get to go to this one. Was listening to it on the radio. Portumna had it wrapped up not long after the first quarter. The way they can just decide a match in a short period reminds me of the Kilkenny. It's hard to see anybody stopping them this year. Martin Dolphin seems like a great addition to the team and is versatile as well. Would love to see Loughrea get through as well, from a neutral point of view. I reckon Portumna would probably hammer them.

I was in Athenry for this one and although Portumna deserved to win it Mellows missed three great chances in the opening 3 minutes and their heads seemed to drop immediately. The difference was in the early part of the game that Portumna took their goal chances really well and Mellows never really threatened Portumna's goal.
In saying that Portumna had their fair share of bad misses also and it seemed that neither team were really at the races.
I would expect Portumna's quality to shine through in the final no matter who they are against.

It seemed like Portumna well playing well within themselves. If they had needed to up the ante they would have done.
