The best clothing shop around is finally coming to Dublin. Grafton street store opening soon. It's great cause it's hard to get things online without trying their stuff on.

Um, am I missing something? The clothes on their website look plain and dull. Nothing stands out. Boringville, Illinois.

There's a great video from Jezebel which lasts about a minute, where two of their writers try on clothes from the store and just look ridiculous. Nothing fits properly and you'd need to be about six foot tall and size 8 to look good in them.

Maybe I'll be proved wrong when it opens but right now, meh. It looks crap.

Lol at the tags for this thread though...

All their clothes are pretty plain which suits me down to the ground. I was never a fan on patterns and love to layer clothes.
I have a few band tees that are AA and they all fit me great!
Convenient how in that video they try on all the clearly unflattering clothes in awful combinations....

I'm saying that I don't understand all the excitement over plain t-shirts and leggings and I thought someone would be able to explain why it's so excitement-inspiring. I won't judge it just on the stuff I saw on the site until I see the shop but right now, I just don't get it.

I think thats the point though. It's quite easy to find shops for unique/good pieces in Dublin, but getting basic t-shirts/leggings/jumpers which don't cost the earth is a pain. In any other city in Europe there a good H'n'Ms, the ones here are awful in comparrisson. Dunnes is ok, but a lot of the stuff feels very old. Pennys can be good but the clothes ware out very soon. AA clothes as far as I can make out, or the pieces of clothing which act as a base/fillers in good outfits.

And they are sweat shop free.. Which is the main reason why I shop there.

I thought I was the only one, I couldn't find anything on their site that I actually liked. And I like plain!

i'm all for the lack of sweat shops, and generally i really like a lot of their stuff, but i've spent a lot of time in their shops trying things on, and actually the quality of the workmanship completely sucks.
the fabric quality is good, but the actual sewing can be so full of errors its ridiculous. and this stuff isn't cheap either, despite what everyone seems to say. and they never seem to be able to keep all the sizes in all the different colors in stock.
i bought a pair of jeans from one of their stores in january, i've worn them A LOT, they still fit ok apart from stretching out on the bum and knees a good bit. anyway, i went into another one of their stores in july to purchase another pair the exact same style but a different color. in a rush i picked up the same size and bought then without trying on, i figured i'd liked the fit of the last pair and this pair would be the same. WRONG. maybe its because they're not made in sweatshops, their workers aren't worried about ****ing up and making a pair of size 26 jeans about two sizes larger than they're supposed to be. i went back and had them take out all the 26's in that color and i tried them all on (since AA sucks at keeping things in stock, that was only 3 pairs). each pair fit completely differently, not just slightly, but the difference between being really baggy and way too big on the waist to being so tight you can barely zip them up.

another time i bought a wifebeater, wore it out and everything, and only then noticed it was actually sewn so completely wrong that their was a half inch difference between the shoulder straps! ridiculous for a company that prides itself on treating employees well. i'm starting to think i might prefer spending less knowing part of my money goes to some poor kid in china rather than some lazy guy in california.

i've never bought stuff from them over the internet, and thanks to my experiences i doubt i ever will, its too much of a risk.

I have to say, I've never had any problem with any of the workmanship in AA clothes.

I like their clothes because they use lovely fabrics, colours, designs and every item is very versatile, and durable. They do some really unsusual stuff, as well as great hoodies, tees and leggings etc. They provide good basics as well as something more eye-catching.

The shops are always staffed by achingly cool modelly art fashion-student types, I wonder who they'll hire here in Dublin, I think we have a shortage of those kinds of people in Ireland!

Coming soon doesn't mean anything... IKEA has een coming soon for what, 3 years now? More?
I think we'll have to shop AA on the net for a little while longer.

I also fear that if they DO open a store in Dublin, prices will be mad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 605 ✭✭✭aliqueenb

yeah looked at their website good few times cos my brother said alot of the girls in hi business and law course wore it but it seems sooooooo boring and leotards like :O

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

Their t-shirts are really nice and soft. Comfortable basics in other words.

Then they have more stand-out items like lamé leggings - they will become a more common sight in Dublin once the store opens, I'd guess!

For tall people this shop is a god send as the t-shirts and jumpers are lovely and long

yeh but IKEA is a different story, they are trying to build a store that goes against some government bill that dictates the maximum size for a store.

american apparel will more than likely just rent somewhere and could have the move sorted in 1-3 months.

I agree with the above poster in a way, I think the whole point of the site and their use of models and so on is this to not appear chic and as such, the clothes do appear bland. However I frequent a few sites and people on there that have AA hoodys t-shirts look really well. Not sure if its worth the money but I'll see for myself when it opens, refreshing though instead of all the usual Topman/Fake diesel crap around there :D

I'm delighted with this news!!:o Some of my favourite items in my wardrobe are from there. They make really great basics with a twist that you can work into lots of outfits and get tons of wear out of. I personally haven't had any problem with the quality. I brought some of their stuff backpacking and it held up really well compared to Topshop etc. Some of my favourites are the triblend deep v t-shirts (anything in this fabric is sooo soft and flattering), oversized pocket cardigans, flex fleece hoodies and raglan pullovers.

Is American Apparel not coming to Dublin anymore? It's no longer on their store locater page on the website, not in the existing stores section or even the new / coming soon stores!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Gauge

That's not a good sign :( I sent them an email about it using their feedback form.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Gauge

    Got a reply:

Hi Gauge, Unfortunately we have decided to put a hold on the Dublin store for the time being. However, we are constantly opening new stores all around the world, so be sure to check back frequently to see if we have a location coming soon to your area. If you feel like you know of a perfect location for American Apparel, feel free to suggest a location online here. In the mean time, be sure to check out our online store to keep up to date with all our current styles. Thank you for your interest.

One relevant sentence, the rest is copypasted form blah. Would have been nice to get some extra details like why it's not opening yet or if they have any idea when it will be open, but at least they replied I guess.
