I don't know what you guys are talking about..you've got it all wrong.
Any 'emos' that I have met have been the most upbeat, crazy hyper individuals!! Only the music dubbed 'emo' is whiney, but most people don't even know what the real 'emo' music is, they get confused with bands like My Chemical Romance and Panic at the Disco, which are actually just alternative rock, by fashionablely dressed men with pretty faces.
Not every pretty face with neat clothes is 'emo', and 'guyliner' has been around much longer than this 'emo phenonomon' of the 21st century, there's always been guys who liked makeup, and yeah, they dressed pretty feminine too, its not an 'emo' thing really.

And I'm sick of people making fun of self harm, it's a real problem that people across the board, regardless of their fashion or music tastes, suffer from.
If an 'emo', or 'chav' or 'D4 head' for that matter, cut themselves, its not a joking matter ffs.

To score an emo, you must take care of your appearance---perfect funky hairdo-anime inspired preferably, be creative with the way you dress-well put together and co-ordinated-always go for a romantic feel-mix lots of colours with the infamous colour black, and you must be thoughtful and opinionated about the 'mainstream' because aggressiveness and vulgarity is reserved for the other stereotype, 'chav'.
Really, you must have an eye for aesthetics, and an appreciation of anything 'artsy' will get you kudos---emos look for meaning and dark beauty in the world. They appreciate that not everything is candyfloss and rainbows, they like the romance of the darker side--this is their 'gothic' influence-and where scene kids come in because they took the look, exaggerated it, and changed the philosophy back to candyfloss and rainbows. They're more mainstream 'emos' than anything else, they liked the japanese inspired fashions, but are still 'daddy's little princesses' or ravers. They are more obsessed with their appearance and physical perfection, they are far more sexual in appearance!

Anyways, the whole alternative seen is so undistinguisable to the average person, so I wish you luck in even accurately locating a real 'emo';)
the majority of 12 to 15 years olds are in fact 'wemos', who are really just emotional teenagers looking for a place to fit in.
