    Hi,
Is there anything you can buy which will tell you how long (distance) you have jogged?

Look up MapMyRun, I think that's what it's called.

    Got an ipod nano?

    Get a apple/nike sport, only €29
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/

It's not as accurate as the Garmin products you see but some of those retail over €200.
It realy is a fantastic little device.
You don't need the special Nike runners, just buy a holder clip on ebay for around €5

depends on how much you are willing to spend...

cheap - nike ipod gizmo (if you have an ipod product that it'll work with)

    expensive - GARMIN Forerunner 405

The only thing with the ipod gizmo is it's pretty restrictive which runners you an use.

i use a polar s625x watch, it comes with a heart monitor and a distance monitor (foor pod). had it for over two years now and i'm quite happy with it. the software that comes with it is quite slow but it's still quite nice to keep a track of all your runs and be able to dig into it and compare and see your progress.

i've seen polar watches in arnotts, but i'm sure you could get a cheap second hand one off ebay. garmin forerunner is a gps device and quite bulky. this uses an inertia sensor which is a lot smaller and unobtrusive and works just as well. you don't get a fancy map of where you've just been running, but the distance measuring is just as good.

mapmyrun.com... not accurate down to the last 2 to 500m, but gives you a pretty good indication.

do you know if there is a more recent version of the s625x or another polar series that has the distance monitor and if they can be purchased in any of the sports stores in dublin

Polar RS200SD, RS400SD and RS800SD all come with the distance monitor.

The models without "SD" are the same watch just without the extra monitors, but you should be able to pick up a S1 Food Pod separately.

It's not terribly bulky and very very acurrate:

I have tried both solutions, and would go with a GPS based watch over a foot pod any day. However, at over 250 euro, you would want to be a keen runner.

I have the slightly older 305 and it totally changed my training. The GPS allows you to track things like elevation changes and then the software can plot your HR vs distance & elevation.

You can also do things like intervals without going to a track, set alarms if your HR or pace drops below a certain threshold, run with a virtual training partner for pacing, etc, etc, etc!!
