Double Barreled Names

What is it with these "new" Ireland people with double barreled names.

Seems every pretentious twat you come across these days has adopted the shotgun approach.

I had the unfortunate experience of meeting an old school mate last week, John Conlan, now known as John Conlan-Smith. When I heard him mention this I just walked off.

And it seems the little office worker bee is particularly affected by this disease. Do people think it sounds posh or something?

I know onething, I refuse to refer to people using both surnames, and they can call me out on it all they want.

I agree in cases where someone's surname is very common e.g. the *** - Smiths. or the ***- Ryans. It can be useful.

But as your old school buddy had a fine distinctive name in Conlon, then yes he is a fool and needs a slap.

These smiths can use a middle initial. Do they think everyone wants to waste time on with their social climbing exercises.

hot chick: tee he he. Oh jeremy take me home and ravish me.
jeremyquinn: Before I can do that, I must know your name my sweet angel.
    hot chick: Siobhan Moran-Dempsey
jeremyquinn: Fcuk off and die you tramp.

I could have a double barraled name if I wanted to; my middle name is my mother's maiden name, but then I would just sound like a pretentious twat.

Maybe the lad wants to carry both sirnames when his da and the ma split. Fair enough. It's hardly a posh thing

    They Sound-Shit.

It's pick and mix tradition afaik.
That said it can only really last one generation.
What happens when John Cunty-Balls marries Mary Toe-Rag?

I'm guessing with a name like "Jeremy" there's actually something after the "Quinn".

    (Or is it "Jeremyquim"...?)

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

While I'm loathe to encourage JQ on any of his inane rants, I kind of feel the same about double-barrelled names.

I got married in May, and had no intention of changing my name. Husband said it would mean a lot to him if I took his surname, but he understood that I feel very strongly about my own name, so his suggestion was that we both double-barrell and take eachother's name.

I just keep putting him off and off and off because I absolutely loathe double-barrelled names.

And what happens if two double-barrellers get married? Are they going to be Ross and Siobhan Moran-Dempsey-O'Carroll-Kelly???

My little one has a double surname. I wasnt married to the mother at the time, so thats the reason why.

Well in that case I'm gonna hyphenate my whole name. Triple barreled name FTW.

Hugh Wayne-Kerr has a nice ring to it.

I might be completely wrong, but didn't double-barrel English names result from surnames given to the bastard children of Randy Aristocrats (whoever he was)?

Here it seems to be the fault of those independent wimmin who want to hang on to the family name when they get married.

Which one persists down the line then? As in what happens if you've a triple-barrel surname down the line?

Well if he's going to kill you anyway, then why not go the whole hog and take all four of your grandparents surnames!

I don't think I'd use both my parents names. No offence meant to them but I think they would sound quite silly together.

My two boys have double barrelled names but only the youngest uses it sometimes.
It my mothers maiden name and my hubby surname.
it's a tradition in the family to hand down the Family name as we are running out of people to continue it.
My two guys are the last of the male line.

Are they sterile? Do you know for a fact that they won't produce male offspring of their own???

The whole system of hierarchy through the paternal line is a bit silly when you think about it. Historically, paternity could never be a 100% surety, whereas maternity is rather more easily proved...

I am double barrelled, I find it easier for work situations... I need to be able to use my maiden name as that is what most people know me as... If I left a message for someone using my marraige surname I wouldnt get replied to.

My children were double barrelled at birth, but now that I am married to their father they just use his surname which is fine by me..

I worry for the children of two parents with Double-Barrell names in the future...
Dublin's southside phonebook enteries are going to need a page to themselves.

It's funny looking at how emotional some of you people seem to get over something so trivial. It's a fecking name for feck sake.

I have a "double-barreled" name for two reasons, one my mothers maiden name is rare and she wanted it too continue, and in Portugal it's very common to take both parents surnames which is where my father is from.

Do I have some complex because of my name? No, never even thought about it until you guys started moaning about it.

... I was actually sitting here thinking about writing a big post about how trivial having a double barreled name is, and that when two people with double barreled surnames have children there isn't a "omg what the hell will we do AHHHHH!" problem. I thought about it. And I decided to make the assumption that if you aren't willing to consider that people take double barreled names because of tradition, too keep a name alive or simply because they like it (similar too oooo i like the colour blue), then I doubt you will actually read my post and think about it. So here's a reply more on your level..

LOL another discontent worker bee Murphy, listen buddy when you get over your little outburst and get back in line, you can come clean my mansions. Here's an idea why don't you single surname peasants change your first names too your second name so you are all Murphy Murphy or Kelly Kelly so it's easier for me to know whether to let you in the front or side entrance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,230 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

You can have all the surnames you like, but if you haven't got at least three Christian names, you're nothing (unless your one of those gimps who decides to name your kids after a football team).
