Pretty damn ordinary. Everytime RTE tries to do "edgy" it just comes across as a fifty year old's fantasy of what "young people" must be up to. It's so busy screaming "LOOK, DRUGS!!", "LOOK NUDITY!!", it forgets to make the characters interesting. All pretty shallow stuff that's not half as exciting as it obviously thinks it is.

there was a very intense sex scene at the beginning. Wasn't expecting that, especially with the parents in the same room :pac::pac:

Sky+'s it for the hell of it..

    .. probably won't watch it!

    Yawn.

It's The Big Bow Wow 2.

RTE need to realise that audiences dont want this. "Edgy" "kooky" characters living "aspirational" D4 lives in moderne clubs, restaraunts and bars complete with flashy superficial production values.

Look at the RTE dramas that did well:
    Paths to Freedom
    Bachelors Walk
    Pure Mule

NONE of these had an ounce of the smugness that Raw drips of. OOHHH Tits in the first 5 minutes! Any smugness in those 3 shows were intentional and lampooned the type of people who probably came up with Raw.

MESSAGE TO RTE: We are a nation of begrudgers! We WILL NOT LIKE a show that you think is edgy and aspirational.

Watched the first 10 minutes of it and first impressions.. it's certainly different!

It appears to be quite well shot and moderately stylish.. but the acting is quite woeful and characters (at first) all appear a bit one dimensional.

Still, I can't help but at least appreciate that they were trying something a bit more up to date and well, non-"RTÉ-ish".

Might finish it and post up my opinions.. but let's be honest - I'll probably blast it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Have to agree with all of the above. Not hugely original.

Very plain drama, I wouldn't consider it edgy or even trying to be edgy. It was far better then the Big Bow Wow (not hard really).

If RTÉ want to do this type of main stream drama then they need to start producing alot more of it.

I missed the start of it, damn, goes off to check www.rte.ie/tv/raw

It's a drama that could be based any where and at any time. As I am not a watcher of either Grey's Anotomy or Private Pratice I am going to put it a bit above either of those two american dramas.

Enjoyable enough but nothing really new on offer. I thought the acting was average again nothing to write home about either way.

    Average. Average.

IMO. It is as good as any other mainstream drama on the TV at the moment. Very average and watchable. It's average.

Personally, I liked it. I'm not saying to was wonderful or anything and it sagged a bit towards the end, but I'm interested enough to watch the rest of it.

I'm a bit sick of that Nordie one who's one of the main characters, she's been in every RTE drama that I've seen in the past two weeks (Single Handed etc.)

I saw it. Thought it was just meh. Gratuitous sex scene early doors to get people watching. To be followed by gratuitous drug taking scene next week. Lots of cliches. Angry sweary chef, etc. In fairness it looks very polished on screen but all fur coat and no knickers comes to mind.

Where was the black haired barman meant to be from again? His accent was all over the shop.

I liked it, but not as 'edgy' and 'shocking' as it was made out it would be.

Is it just me or is she very hard to understand? I didn't catch half of what she was saying. :o

I noticed a lot of the accents were a bit varied. The two that are brother and sister sound distinctly different and Keith McErlean's accent changed a bit in the kitchen scene.

It's not just you - not because of her accent, just the fact that she can't enunciate. She sounds like she's trying to speak around a mouthful of cotton wool.

Ah here, that's a bit harsh like. :) I mean, I watched The Big Bow Wow all the way through to the end (I'm still not too sure why) and that was just dire. This was mildly diverting at least.

I'd fall on the more positive end of things. The acting wasn't exactly great, but it wasn't bad, and it's not like any of them had much to do beyond shouting exposition at each other - I'd give it a week before judging that too much. The sometimes awkward dialogue I'd overlook for similar reasons, and again, it's nothing near as wooden or hackish as the drivel spouted in TBBW. Overall, I'm actually pleasantly surprised by this, considering I watched it to see how much of a train wreck it would be. It's kinda-interesting people doing kinda-interesting things in a shiny, vaguely newish setting, so I'll be watching for the next few weeks at least, if for no other reasons than (a) the kiwi chef guy's a bit of a ride and (b) the fact that Dublin is the size of a postage stamp makes for great people-spotting. Saw a good friend of mine in the background of the Trinity scene, and will be duly ripping the piss tomorrow.

Edit: WRT all the "edgy" and "shocking" comments, do people think they were really trying for "edgy"? Trying for easy nudity and titillation, sure, but I don't think sex has been considered "edgy" since the late 90s, even in Ireland.

Re the sex scene in the first 5 minutes (switched over to John Waters after that as I already had the measure of the programme and could see it was going be standard RTE modern yoof drama where apparently every young person in Ireland is completely amoral, takes drugs, has a mouth like a sewer etc) : does nobody have sex in the missionary position anymore? It's just that in practically every sex scene I have seen on tv in the last 5 or so years, we get 30 seconds or so of the woman sitting on top of the man with her breasts madly bouncing up and down in front of the camera while the man lies there wide-eyed and moaning. I'd hate to think it was just an excuse for a bit of gratuitous female nudity. After all, the lads rarely have to get their todgers out to get a bit of acting work.

    Sky+ stopped
recording just after the first slap in the office at the end. Was there a big cat fight or did she take it like a man?

A pretty poor cat fight ensued and then the boss who had been missing all epsiode showed up

Overall I thought it was ok - way too much obvious exposition and set-ups for later episodes. The whole fact that
the Monaghan girl fancies her friend was obvious from the start - they didn't have to spell it out

It's definitely miles better that The Big Bow Wow was but the whole drug storyline could grow very tiresome if it continues throughout the series. What wacky capers will they get up to to pay back the drug dealers? Hhmmmm... Headrush anyone?

And tintin67 - nobody has sex in the missionary position anymore, only you. :p

i only watched about 30min or so then knocked it off. have it on sky+ so i'll prob stick with it. two characters really get on my tits though,

    1. the Cringeworthy gordon Ramsey ripp off who TBF just cant pull it off.

    2. Rebbecca is it? the dimwit waitress. for god sake the guy lied to her about trying to get money for druggs and ended up in hospital and she's still on his arm. Jesus Wept!!

All in all cant shine a light to the likes of pure mule but very few can IMO, I'll stick with it and see where it go's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

I seem to along the same lines as everyone else.

From the trailer I was expecting (read fearing) an edgy set in the heat of the kitchen and all plot lines revolving around the kitchen thing but it wasn't that at least. The drug plot line and yer man from Bachelors Walk leaving the missus are both major plot line and have feck all to do with the kitchen. This is a good thing at least.

Sure it dropped a bit in the second half and sure some of the characters were a little one dimensional (the Czech guy springs to mind) but it's not woeful so I'll give it another couple of weeks

First ep of the Big Bow Wow started with a gratuitous sex scene as well (lit in blue if anyone remembers) 5 years later, plus ca change

You hate to think it but lets face it that's what it was.

I think showing a penis on television is more like showing a vigina, still a bit of a taboo.

That portly blonde with all her bits bouncing had me diving for the remote and the famine programme on the other channel, far more interesting. RTE just cant do sex scenes, it looks wrong, plain wrong.

which member of the female cast appeared in the sex scene at the start , i only tuned in half way through ,

the australian gordon ramsay wanabe was so cliched

I thought it was ok. That Rebecca one can't act for sh!te though. That nordie one annoys me too...but is she actually nordie? My OH said she was playing a culchie in Pure Mule, and he said he could hear her big midlands accent begging to come through the put on nordie one last night......

The second episode looks a bit more exciting.....

Oh and Bobby is the spit of Jared Leto.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,386 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Watched it all, it wasn't terrible or anything, but a lot of it was very obvious. Some cliches (i.e. swearing chef man, girl in love with guy who's in love with other guy, etc.)

Not bad, not good either, i'll watch it if i'm around on a monday, if i miss it, meh...

shes a bogger to her core but shes very cute and i like her as an actress , very authentic

I don't see it a cringeworthy but I have still to understand how it could be.

If you missed you can get it on www.rte.ie/tv/raw but you haven't missed much just wait for next week.

Let's not go down the road of accents again !!!!! always with the accents .... Anyway is a nordie not a cluchie?

The Big Bow Wow is certainly not.

While saying that it's marginally better than the big bow wow is somewhat like saying losing 3 fingers from your left hand is marginally better than losing 4, it has to be said that some of the acting was awful.
The Money related stand-off in the office at the end
being a case in point. Bloody awful stage-emoting, all wide-eyed face acting and raised voices. Yocky.

Eddie Hobbs having an ould blub over a mass famine grave was much more entertaining. Oh and That Jazzy Guinness one isn't a bad looker either...

Could you make a program any more perfectly multicultural if you tried?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,754 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

I was standing on O'Connell Street when they filmed the 'two junkies nicking the guy's wallet' scene. (not a spoiler, it's the very first scene and has no bearing at all on the plot.)
At first I was startled and thought it was a real mugging until the guy in the suit (Keith McErlean) raced across the road, got past Easons then stopped and the two junkies came up to him, chatting. Even then I was left pretty confused until I saw RAW, remembered that day and went 'aaaah, now that makes sense...' :o

Token could have a few lines. (A south park reference).
it has to be said that some of the acting was awful.

I personally didn't think the acting was awful, the last scene was funny I thought, I didn't take it very seriously. I thought the idea of the bust up was that the two girls start blaming each other without great effect and both know it so their arguements seem lame hence the bust up. At least that's what I thought they where going for, prehaps not!.

No I got to see the start of the show, it was a nice opening scene. (It's online now).

I hope they go for a Chief kinda character with him - never says anything, but does something really important at the end. Also I like the way they call him Tiny cause that's what everyone calls him - he's a bouncer in the Dice Bar in Dublin.

I now officially hate this show. Gave it a second chance tonight, it was like being shouted at for an hour. Dismal writing (especially when trying to be "comic"), it doesn't have a single original idea in its head.

I didn't watch it tonight. I made up my mind that if the show wasn't Irish I wouldn't watch it, it is very average and as you say unoriginal. I think we are expecting too much from it.

I am sure it will have an audience.
