I cant answer your question directly because I dont have Setanta's address but on cancellations in general I always cancel my direct debit on the same day I inform the company. I then clear any balance by cheque providing I agree with the amount. Far easier than allowing them to keep taking money from your account and trying to get it back later.

It sounds like I've just experienced what loads of other customers have gone through. 22 mins on hold for cancellation department, then subjected to 10 mins of questions and better deals etc . Then get told you still have to write a letter to cancel your subscription.

I told her that I was simply going to stop my debit order. I was told that I would just be hounded by their accounts dept for the arrears - and this could effect my credit rating.

Why don't they just put THIS address on their website to save us all the trouble !

    Setanta Sports Cancellation Dept.
    Department 8944
    Sunderland
    SR9 9XZ
    U.K

Hope this helps someone else !

is there a direct phone number as well? I barely watch my sub and ive heard its increasing so i wont bother with it now. Ill keep it for over christmas and then thats that, plus the matter the signal comes and goes. cant really rely on it at the moment. Monday nights debarcal was the last 20e worth!!!

Do you reckon you can get a bad credit rating off them ?

I want to cancel setanta immediately but dont want the hassle of writing in /drawn out procedure

I was going to ring them tomorrow and cancel over the phone and seeing as today i got a new credit card with new expiry date (which setanta dont have from me yet ) , so when they hit me for this months charges the expired credit card will fail and they cant charge me .
So if they refuse to cancel me over the phone, i just tell them, well you aint getting another penny.

Am i going to land myself in bother with trying the above stunt ?

Just wondering has anyone recently gone through the cancellation process ? Do you need to phone them or just send them a letter. Only hassle with a letter is that they can always claim that they did not receive it by the start of your next months subscription.

I noticed that the new terms & conditions requires 2 months cancellation notice, when I signed up it was one month.

After not being able to watch last nights match I have decided to give up on them, it was fine until about 10 minutes into the match and then the "no signal being received" it came back around the 70 min mark.

Setanta are now accepting cancellation notices via email. Email your notice to requests@setanta.com with your account number.

Setanata are impossible to work with and have no consideration for their customers.

Cancelled my subcribtion back in dec '07 over the phone but money was still withdrawn from my account the following month.
I quickly cancelled my direct debit.
The only way they would allow me resolve the issue was to wright to them asking for my money back from the month they were not supposed to withdraw money from my account.
I did this but only got letter saying i owed them money.
Eventually around 4 months later got a check for the money i was owed
Went to the bank to cash the check and low and behold This was a sterling check and could not be cashed in Ireland.
that check is still lying around my house somehwere, couldn't be bothered writting more letters to them for the sake of 20 euro -

Setanta my arse - i'd rather watch TG4

I was pretty sure Sterling cheques could be cashed here.

At least, I could with a US dollar cheque

i can confirm if you cancel you will get it for 3 months at €10.99. Just had a customer loyalty rep ring from setanta and offered me that deal.

My father died in July last year and since then I've tried without success to get his name taken off their mailing list. I've even written to both joint CEOs but haven't had the courtesy of a reply.

If anyone has any idea how I can stop this really distressing mail, please please let me know.

Setanta are the absolute scum of the earth. I am still trying since 1st December 2008 to cancel my subscription. Yet again they have taken another payment from my credit card. That's now a Dec, Jan and Feb payment thay have taken since I first requested to be cancelled.

Anyone know if I can tell my credit card company to block their requests?

You cannot get a bad credit rating from Setanta.

All bluff and bluster to make you do things their way.

When did you last ring them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

you need to write to them. I wrote to them twice and then when i finally cancelled my DD they rang me up begging for me to stay and offered me 3 months at 10.99. Phone calls to them are useless as you either get cut off when you say you want to cancel or they say they are transfering you to the relevent department when then your on hold for ages and ages. If you do speak to someone make sure you get a reference number.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

Got an email off Setanta today threatening me with debt collectors for an outstanding amount. Ive replied to them saying, It would be nice to know how much i owe & how i go about paying it, instead of threatening me with debt collectors! They told me i have to ring them to arrange payment! Last time i rang them it cost me 15e!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

    Don't bother calling them again.

i know, but why on earth haven't they informed me i owe them money & why cant they tell me how to pay via email and why do i have to waste my money on expensive phone calls?

They are a joke, A lot of their non premier league football is on FTA!

They make serious money off the phone calls. That's why they only want to deal over the phone.

Nope. Setanta are not a bank or finance house.

You dont seem to get any response from them, Only time you do get some response is when you call their premium rate number, your put on hold, shoved from pillar to post & then sometimes cut off so you have to go through this all again!

Ive watched about 2hrs of Setanta in the past month. The only thing keeping me attached to them was the Indian premier league of cricket, But not 100% sure if this is going ahead now & just for that alone its not worth 22e a month.

Most important post in the thread. This is how I cancelled, hassle free. You are still giving 30 days notice, so you might have to make one more payment depending on the timing. Keep a copy of the email, and if they still debit your card, forward a copy of the email to your credit card provider and request a charge back. If you are having problems with direct debit, an idea might be to switch over to credit card payment, as you seem to have more protection when paying for things with a card.

I would also say that you should request a read receipt which proves that someone at Setanta actually opened your email. The 2 together would be enough proof that they received your cancellation request.

Where would one get their Setanta account number. Would a viewing card number suffice?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Would a viewing card number suffice?
    I would think so.

Sky always ask me for my account number which I don't know. Giving them the viewing card number is always enough for them to find my account.

I think it should as they are tied together. Its also on any letters they send you.

I just gave them my address and name and last 4 digits of Credit Card it was being debited from. They told me my Customer number and asked me to email requests@setanta.com with my Name, Address, Customer Number and a brief reason for cancellation.

Cancelled last month. They say it takes 30 days to cancel, but in the meantime, if you pay your subscription, they keep you connected until the next subscription due date.

I cancelled for a few reasons, first, it was €18 p/m when I started, then over the last year has gone up to €22, plus when the price jumped first from €18 to €20, I was never informed.

When I called then to cancel they dropped subscription to €10 p/m for 3 months, so I kept it. At a tenner it's worth it, but more than that, no chance!

After the 3 months was up, I called to cancel and they gave it to me for €7.50 for 6 months! That was a bargain. It went back up to €22 last month so I decided to cancel and use the difference for Sky HD (Still deciding if I want it or not though)

A fella called me last night asking if I would stay for €10 p/m for the next 3 months until the finish of the Premier League. This time I declined, not enough on Setanta to warrant another 30 quid, especially since I'm paying mega money for Sky Sports anyway.

I find Setanta very cheap expensive programming. IE, It's Expensive, and the quality is cheap. When you compare it to Sky, there's no comparrison to quality and coverage. It's cheaper to head to your local and watch the game than subscribe to Setanta for the amout of games you'd "actually" want to watch.

This is true if you watch maybe 1 or 2 games a month. Then there is the other sports they show.

Two Games a month, three pints a game, maybe a packet or two of nuts = around €15 per game or €30 a month. Setanta €22 per month or less if you keep hounding them.

I'd say better off subbing to them up to end of next season when they lose some of there rights.

3 games (if even a month for me) 1 bottle a game, (drive so you can't drink) :)

I'm only into Premier League and most of the games I wanted to watch were on Sky this season, so for me, it's wasn't worth the money. For others, I'm sure it is. Depends on how much you're into other sports, personally, I'm wouldn't sit down and watch much else.

My original post was to clarify how to cancel (as per thread) sorry for going off topic on how much I didn't like Setanta

I agree, i wouldnt watch much else either, for the amount of games they actually showed for the 22e it just wasnt worth it. Ive interest in cricket, especially the new IPL but that was so much up in the air if it was going ahead, that was another decision to cancel. Most of Setanta's FA cup matches are availble FTA either via ITV or DSF germany, so that wasnt a seller for me.

IPL is going ahead now in South Africa, so ive now lost interest in that.

Ive fianlly been able to cancel my sub, A guy rang me up saying i owed 1 month, which i paid on my credit card.

So thats that. I doubt ill ever subscribe again to Setnata. Getting a foreign sub is the way to go for next season. I can put up with non english commentry.

Below is the text of the cancellation e-mail I sent a couple of hours ago following an unsuccessful attempt to cancel over the phone. Has anyone else heard of this extended 30 days nonsense?
I wonder if I'll hear anything back.

    "To whom it concerns,

As per phone call with Shane & Paul earlier today, I wish to cancel my subscription to Setanta with immediate effect. I understand that you require 30 days notice so I expect the service to be discontinued in exactly 30 days from today.

Your representative Paul earlier told me that the company would serve me with 30 days notice (!?) after my next billing date, and that I would then have to pay a further month's bill for a service which I do not want. This is totally unacceptable.

It is for me the customer to give you the company 30 days notice of my wish to cancel, not the other way around!

I have been a customer of Setanta for a couple of years now and to be treated in this manner is nothing short of disgraceful. It had been my intention to re-instate the service next August however I will not now be doing this. Instead I will be posting details of my experience with Setanta on several high profile Internet discussion boards, so that others will become aware of this shabby practice.

To re-iterate, today 27th April 2009, I rang your company to advise of my wish to cancel my subscription.
I spoke with Shane/Shay, confirmed my address, Sky viewing card number, phone number and e-mail address, and advised him I wished to cancel. After some discussion he advised me that he would transfer me to Paul in your "customer loyalty" section.
Paul then came on the line, asked me to confirm all the same details as before, and after offering me a reduced price for 3 months which I declined, he then said that the 30 days notice period would start only when your company wrote to me, at an unspecified date after my next billing date, which itself is some 25 days hence. This would mean a minimum of 55 days notice, with notice to begin at the company's behest!
After all this, he only then mentioned that I would need to send an e-mail to this address in order to activate this longwinded and downright outrageous process of cancellation.

    Sincerely,"

    .....

I get the sarcasm, but I'm not sure what you mean by "work" there mossy. What is it you think I'm trying to achieve?

I don't want anything to "work" - all I am doing is honouring the terms of my contract and advise 30 days notice to cancel.

Indeed, I made that point to them, however this reply (surprised how quickly it came; within a few hours) suggests they are sticking to their assertion:

    "Dear Mr. Redmond

    Thank you for your e-mail.

I am sorry to hear you wish to cancel your subscription with Setanta Sports however, I can confirm that your request will be processed and your subscription will be terminated 30 days from your next billing date."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

That is bull excrement. 30 Days from today that is all they are entitled to. Their way means it can be anything up to 60 days notice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,889 ✭✭✭cgarvey

It's sneaky, and Setanta aren't alone in doing it, but here's how it works.

You are obliged to serve them 30 days notice of cancellation of your contract. So on March 1, you say I want to cancel, meaning a cancellation date of March 30th. Howveer, your billing date will be somewhere between there (and if you think you time it perfectly to the 30 days, your request will magically not be processed until the day after!).

Say a billing date of March 15th. When that comes around, they charge you another month's subscription (as the contract is still in effect), bringing you to April 15th. Your contract expires on March 31st but you've pre-paid another 2 weeks (ish), so they don't cut you off until then.

When they say 30 days from your next billing date, the contract is null and void after your 30 days notice, but they still provide service from your end of your contract until the end of your billing date (prepaid). It's easier explain that to most people as 30 days from the next billing date.

I've no idea on the legality of all that, and would question what sort of contract exists for the period between your billing date and cancellation notice, but that's how it works. Setanta aren't alone in that, even if it is sneaky.

Also if you cancel your DD they will not cancel your account. It took me nearly 4 months to get rid of them. I cancelled my DD after my 30 days after i stated i would settle any outstnading amount up with them via cheque, but they then told me it had voided my termination of my account. They had suspened my viewing after the 30 days but i was still paying for the service for another 3 months. I was issued with a recovery letter saying it had been passed onto a debt collection agency. I wrote to them a final time attaching all my documentation that id sent to them, basically saying try to recover something that i was not suscribed to for the last 90 days & ill take you to court for fraud.

Someone rang me to say that i would just have to pay 10.99 for the final days over my last payment date until my 30 days notice had expired.

I agreed, paid by CC & so far so good, ive heard nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭Iamhere

Rang this week to give my notice wanted to stopped it for the summer, was offered 10.99 for the next 6 months, which i thought was good... so i took it...
