Yeah saw it about a month ago.Wasn't expecting much but it blew me away.Far better than all the Borne movies put together. Its been getting some really bad reviews from Empire to name one, for whatever reason.I can't understand why.All I can think of is that some people might be put off by the violence in it, which I must say is excellent, real Jiu Jitsu in a movie for a change.Hope we get a few sequels , Neason was excellent in it.He does stuff to people in it that you'd expect Rambo or Statham to even go,"Ah, now that's a bit harsh".

when he is talking to the guy on the phone and tells him he will hunt him down, i was like OMFG this is going to be amazing
another fav bit of mine was when he was electrocuting Marco and just said i believe you, but left the switch on :D

A must see guys and i agree surpasses bourne in so many ways.

bourne in retirement!! simple as!! and its great to see neeson kick ass again

    Thread already here

    Here's what I posted -
Went to see this on Saturday and it was quality. Good story line. Thought Neeson was excellent in a toned down bad ass kinda way. The action was believable unlike other **** that has been released lately (I'm looking at you 'Wanted').

    Well worth seeing

have been looking forward to seeing it, but want to see it in the cinema, so i'll have to wait til the 26th. damn and drat.

Ya i'd usually aheam... get this as soon as i could aheam get a decent quality version but cause i'm a fairly big fan of his and that he's irish i'll go see it in the cinema.

    Looks class though.

BTW never trust empire's reviews! They have given some awful dross 3/4 stars(Indy IV anyone?) and panned other films that where very entertaining. its all a matter of what your into

They gave Goldmember 4 stars.... 4 STARS! I loved the first two and still find them funny but i honestly didn't laugh even once during Goldmember, thankfully I had got in to see it for free so at least I had not wasted money on it.

But back on topic, Empire suck and Taken appears to be a very good movie, really looking forward to seeing it when it does finally come out. (even better, the trailer really interested my GF so she can't wait to see it either! If only she felt the same about Transporter 3:D)

When is this released in Dublin?

Real Jiu Jitsu you say: would that be Koryu, gendai or competitive. Now I have even higher expectations, Damn it.

    Empire's review was a disgrace.

Super action movie, really enjoyable gritty action.

Delighted to stumble across this thread, saw the trailer only last week and was one of the few trailers that actually made me say " I got to see that" without prior knowledge of the film.

I was a little put off by the review in Empire but I'm really considering not getting it anymore, they're reviews have become dire lately, if they do any big piece on a film it seems its guaranteed a 4 star rating and dont get me started on the pointless debate thingy at the back!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,649 ✭✭✭Not The Real Scarecrow

agree with above post totally about Empire.Getting sick of it lately and getting really pissed off with total film too. Both are only a shadow of the magazines were.I used to get Empire because of the longer interviews and sometimes had different articles, Total Film was less serious and dealt with alot of movies Empire wouldn't even mention. However lately both are way too similar and offer little difference in their articles.I really miss Hotdog.Does any one know if its still on the go or could they recommend a better mag.Even though I'm sick of the other two mags I still get em cause they pass the time on the bog.

How have people been to see this when it's out the 26th?

I seen it tonight, right time right place to be offered invites for this (I have no idea how to get these or why or what people get them) really really enjoyed it! Even my GF enjoyed it!

Love the bit with him on the phone when he's tells them he will get them, it's nearly the whole reason i wanted to see the movie after seeing that in the trailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Neo#

How come Empire gave it 1 out of 5? Unbelievable. Only a little article describing how terrible it is. I think it said you should avoid any fleapit showing the wretched film, or something along those lines. I havent seen it yet but the article put me off a little. Maybe Taken didnt pay off the magazine the way they were supposed to????

I see but I was more hoping someone would be telling me about advanced screenings and the like. Also maybe people had other means of getting to see these movies...

For some reason I thought Ireland was always reasonably early with releases? Most of the time i hear from mates in Holland they haven't seen something yet because it's not out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

Saw the trailer. Looks pretty cool. I love the scorned action hero in leather jacket seeking vengeance action thriller genre.

I wouldn't mind Empire. Last year or so they only give good reviews to Megabucks Blockbusters or Obviously Went Out Of Their Way to be Indie Flicks. It's all politics. Just look at their review for The Dark Knight (not that I didn't love it), they list off their problems with it, but then 5 stars.

Neeson as a action man should be interesting

    Review plus some spoilers
Liam Neeson is in excellent form as retired CIA operative Brian, an overprotective father who knows the world only too well. Railroaded into agreeing to let his estranged daughter, Kim spend time in Paris with friends, he is highly suspicious of the journey. No sooner does she land in France, Kim and her companion Amanda are quickly befriended by the lovely wolf in sheep's clothing, Peter, and immediately kidnapped and sold into slavery as prostitutes.

What follows is a very fast, furious and time-limited hunt for the kidnappers who took his daughter and her friend. Brian is bereft at the thought that Kim has been kidnapped, knowing exactly what will happen to her if he does not find her but swings back into action with all the technical gadgets and martial arts moves to make you very jealous. The kidnappers are swarthy, nasty, unrelentless and very committed to their profession. Their callousness shines through at every given opportunity.

What makes this movie believable is that we know female trafficking is on the rise and you wonder at the ease of how these women are targetted; the crooked cops get a look in too. What makes this unbelievable is the happy ending - most women who are trafficked rarely get to behold their families again. If they do, it is usually more than a few years, not days.

Nevertheless, a banging, ruthless, By-Any-Means-Necessary and Taking No Prisoners, Liam Neeson do this movie justice and I liked it. Other Holloywood actors have done this role before (Steven Seagal) but Liam is by far the better and more convincing. A must for Christmas DVD.

saw this a few months ago, sure it has flaws , but if you take it for what it is , its actually quite an enjoyable flick, i quite liked neason in this role even though i had jason stathom in my head the whole way through watching it:D

Neeson is bad ass in this flick . You have to let alot of stuff go I.E the ending.

but i wouldnt put anyone off seeing it , great movie for people who like bourne or rambo.

    Neeson in the new Rambo?

Just back, great film, suspend some reality and enjoy Nesson kicking the hell out of everyone he meets.

Much more believable that he has that capability that someone like Damon in Bourne.

    Really enjoyed it

    Thanks for the merge.

It really is the ultimate bloke film of the year. I'll just say what we're all thinking: the Empire reviewer is gay.

    Speaking of Empire:

    http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=23320

Proving that age is no barrier to kicking ass and taking names, Liam Neeson popped into London on Wednesday night for the premiere of his new action flick, Taken.

“I love the fact that this guy is described as being in his 40s rather than some guy who’s like, ‘He’s 27, he’s cut, he’s in the gym every day’,” says the Irish actor of his character Bryan Mills. “It was like, this is a real guy you know.”
Neeson plays an ex-secret service man (a “Preventer” in his own words), who embarks on a brutal and violent hunt to track down his daughter after she gets kidnapped in Paris.

“He’s given up his trade to be close to her to make up for times gone by,” says Neeson. “So he’s an obsessed dad.”

The role gives Neeson a chance to take on the hard man mantle but how does he think his character would fare against the granddaddy of action stars?

“Bryan versus Bond? Well Bond would have all the gadgets but I’d have the dirty tactics.”

This was one of the worst films I've seen in ages. Awful plot, confusing and borderline idiocy.

    I loved it. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

    Really liked it.

The mongo at rte.ie also gave it a 1.

The story behind it isnt exactly masterful but I didnt get bored in it at all. To be fair he should have killed the wife over her little white lie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,531 ✭✭✭patch

I thought it was a great 'bourne in retirement' flick.
IIRC empire gave district 13 a review of 3 stars. Seen as this is the second movie from the same director they might have at least mentioned that.
There must be some politics going on in the background we are unaware of.

i put off downlaoding this film and then saw a clip for it and thought this looks interesting

downloaded it and ****ing loved it

talked my dad and a friend to going to see it gain with me on friday with no information other than i liked it and liam neeson was in it
when neeson says 'i will find you and i will kill you

they both just looked at me and said this is going to be class
when he shot the french cops wife in the arm it was like WTF this guys not kidding

if you have seen it in the cinema and have somehow 'legally' seen it online you will notice it is edited in one place which really suprised me.
the electrocution scene in the online version is much grittier, instead of puttint the gator grips on the chair he drives two nails threw the guys knees and connects them to that, you also see the guys face and upper body as he being electrocuted

Which is strange as that's the way it was shown in the trailer.

I don't know about that. Reviews are helpful and can be insightful. Having said that, I like sites like metacritic. Empire's review of Taken was pathetic though. It was almost politically motivated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

They have got a point though.

Just replace the word 'daughter' with the word 'oil' and you've pretty much got yourself American foreign policy.

They just missed out on the fact that it's a very enjoyable film...that's all.

Sure, but if a guy from Cleveland takes a dump; replace the word "dump" with "Iraq's oil" and you also have America's foreign policy.

What annoyed me about the review is that he read all of this crap into it. It's a straight revenge flick. Guy lose daughter, guy kills everyone to get her back. Simple as that. The fact he was ex-CIA was simply to explain why he was such a deathninja.

I'm sure if you take any film at all, you can probably extract a political analogy from it. Except Team America:World Police - That was just a love story.

    Saw this yesterday.

Quality movie, 15 mins of father loves daughter to get the story going then BAM loads of killing and action.

    It was fairly short though!

    ryoishin wrote: »

It was but I think it stood to it, Some films are needlessly long espically in this genre, I only got a chance to watch this last night cause I always watch films in the cinema if the lead in them is Irish. The Idea that this deserves a one star is simply baffeling, It's no masterpice but it did exaclty what i expected it too do.

IMO you just cant trust critics, Someone will ALWAYS hate or like any film ever made.

Neeson was very good in it, my only two problems was his unbeliveably vile x wife and some of the dialoge was questionable. but TBF he does come across quite insane in it
when he shoots the cops wife being a highlight

All in all I'd give it 3/5 (which is high for me cause I think 4 stars is thrown around way too often)

Off topic the directors other film "district 13" is excelent so i would suggest to try and watch it.

I was thinking of seeing this tomorrow becasue of the lack of any other decent films in the cinema. So basically would you say its worth the admission. I like bond/Bourne films so I presume I will like this.

Ya I really think you would Budd, I suppose the best way to put the film is a retired Bourne who kinda go's a bit mental. Now, having said that the Bourne Films are much better but seeing its a good action film.

best film i have seen in a long time!! probably because the storyline actually had some truth to it rather then some far fetched fantasy that some films usually have!!

i thought the ending was a bit blunt but no def recomend it!
