Wouldn't mind donating a few drops.

What kind of dirty questions do they ask you about past sexual encounters?

I heard they can be wicked filthy indeed.

And are you allowed have some small quantities of ganja in your bloodstream?

    Nope,but I have taken plenty!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,493 ✭✭✭RedXIV

they ask are you gay, have you slept with prostitutues, have you HIV, all fun questions like that :)

I've given quite a few times, but the first time i went was after a serious session the night before and they wouldn't take it. So i'd imagine it'd have to be pretty clean.

Oh and your iron level in your blood has to be high

Yeah have done it loads of times

No drugs or drink in your system

They ask questions (in full like one form total) about your sex life std's homosexual etc

    Pretty non intrusive really

Of course you have to sacrifice a small goat to be allowed in ;)

Thanks for the link. Just answered the questionnaire - I can't give blood! I lived in England between 1980 and 1996 which is a no no. They say I could have Variant CJD.

What the **** does CJD have to do with england in the 80s? Was it in the water or something?

I once gave blood so much that the hot nurse chick who was taking it fainted cos of my awesomeness.

I cant give blood. Tattoos. Face and knob piercings, a frankly impressive array of intraveinous drug abuses and the STD smorgasbord.

I'm on Roaccutane. If a pregnant woman got my blood her baby would be deformed.

Personally, I'm willing to take that risk, but the doctors say no.

    I've never donated myself.

I remember when I was in DIT Kevin St. some of my mates went to give blood (just to get a free pint) and they wouldn't let them cos of their frequent drug abuse! T'was funny. Probably had to be there though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

I've always wanted to. I should, but I think drug use is a problem...
I've some friends who give blood and then go out for a session cause with the low amount of blood in their body they get drunk real quickly. Sounds like a good idea!

They wont allow me either, its like an elite club where the unclean can only look in from the outside!

I can give blood but I've been having endoscopies for the last 2 yrs every 6months and you have to be 6 months over an endoscopy before you can donate. dang. :(

As I mentioned a few times before, my blood isn't good enough for the Americans*. I keep trying every once in a while to see if rules have changed. :/

They don't, but they test all the blood before it's used, so they can tell if it's contaminated, hence they won't accept you next time :D A lot of blood donated gets put to waste because it doesn't meet standards, unfortunately

Yes despite being incredibly squeamish and cowardly when it comes to pain, and despite having blood that likes to twist needles in my veins.

    I deserve a medal. Really.

I'm overseas on uni scholarship for the past 3 years. The American Red Cross will not let me give blood because of the mad cow scare of a few years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,077 ✭✭✭Shelflife

yes about 25 times now got the pin and all, unfortunatly they wont take it anymore because of the cjd/uk thing , pity really because my son needed blood and without it he wouldnt be here today.

if you can ... then do you are literally a lifesaver.:D

I give blood 2 or 3 times a year. First time was just because I was curious about what blood type I was and it's the easiest way to find out. :)

As far as I'm aware cannabis is ok they ask you no questions about it only questions about Cocaine and Heroin, or any other snortable drugs.

The blood is filtered so shouldn't make much of a difference if have a small amount of THC in your
    system

They don't, all the blood is tested to see if it's clean before giving it the patient.

Remember the first time I went and was asked what type of blood I have, didn't even think and just said red.

TBH, anyone who's nervous about the needle / pain thing, it's nothing really and tiny pinprick, compare that to the poor guy who just had his leg's crushed into the engine of his or her car. It's a tiny sacrifice that really does mean so much.

He, I eat and take loads of free biscuits and always have a wimpy friend who'll come; not to give blood but to get a free sandwich and cup of coffee.
Didn't think they still gave guinness though...

Maybe you and wimpy look like trouble and they hide it from you.

I have given blood a few times. The last time I went they wouldn't take it because I was anaemic and now I can't donate for a year or two because of a new tattoo.

I never gave blood, but I had a blood test before. I imagine the procedure is the same?

Still have a bad taste in my mouth over it. They had these glass tube things they put the blood into. I was sent to get a test by my doctor. When everyone else was getting one little tube taken out of them and then being told to go home, i was sitting there like a prick whilst Nurse Dracula took FOUR tubes out of me. I felt so weak, and i had to cycle up a hill to get home.

So she took four tubes, but the fun was only just beginning.

The minute she got up and turned around, she dropped them on the floor and smashed them.

So all in all, i gave eight little tubes in my first and only blood test. I felt horribly weak going home. I had to walk with my bike.

I never even got the results... and that was over a year ago :(

So I guess they take your details etc when you go to give blood. Do they tell you if it's accepted or not accepted?

Not allowed..CJD balls, and I've a rare blood group too, AB negative!

    Oh well..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,077 ✭✭✭Shelflife

its all barcoded and would be linked back to your details so i would imagine that the next time you went you would be told.

    Yeah I've donated about 4 or 5 times... I'm 20 years old

Takes little time and could save someone's life.

The needle does not hurt, so please don't let that dissuade you!

According to the IBTS, only 3% of people in Ireland donate blood. Dunno if that's eligible people or just people in general, but it's still low!!!

    www.giveblood.ie

I'm an organ donor too, because, well... what am I gonna do with my organs after I die? It's a waste. You can order a card via text (see my sig).

I'm considering giving platelets, but it takes 50 minutes to do and you have to go into town for it :( Anyone done this? Is it an ordeal?

Also, has anyone donated bone marrow before? I had always thought it would be mega-painful (needle through your bone!!!), but the IBTS site says it's done under general anaesthesia

I've given 20 times at this stage, got the pin the last time, actually I think it should be about 23 but I've moved several times over the years so I think they had one or two records on me and they didn't get merged properly. I started in college when I was 18, if I had friends along donating with me, we used to try and get beds beside each other so we could race to see who gave the pint the fastest. The nurses were amused anyway :)

I asked about platelet donation the last time I was there and from what I remember they don't allow you to donate blood while you are a platelet donor. It's really only practical for those living in/near Dublin, so I can't do it.

not allowed to due to the whole living in the UK thing during the early 80's

    :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,473 ✭✭✭R0ot

Never given blood, every time I have blood taken for tests or anything I always feel incredibly ill afterwards, not a needle thing just something weird when I lose blood like that. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,772 ✭✭✭civis_liberalis

I wouldn't be too cut up about not being able to give, If you can't, you can't. Sure they don't like pay you or anything?

There would be lines for it if they did probably...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

I really should give blood at some stage, though I've been saying that for years and haven't got around to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 488 ✭✭dl

They had these glass tube things they put the blood into. Nurse Dracula took FOUR tubes out of me. I felt so weak, and i had to cycle up a hill to get home.

Each vile holds about a teaspoon full... no wonder you were weak! :p

I used to donate plasma (now man made)... they would centrifudge the plasma out of the blood & put the red blood cells back into you, it took 3 or 4 attempts to extract half a litre of plasma & over an hour to do it!

I can't donate blood now due to the medication I'm on but over the years that I did I manage to achieve a silver pin, a gold pin, a gold drop & the porcelain pelican (100)!

I recommend everyone that can donate to do so, its no big deal & there is definitely a feel good factor... I'd still do it if I could!
