Following the "Year Book Idea" thread, I would like to ask you to sign up if you would like to be part of the book and to have your picture in the book.

You would get obliged to submit one photo and to buy one book if you sign in.

Counting of the participants will be closed 14. 9. 2008 at 23:59:59. There is always a way how to add another pictures, but the head count is important to estimate size and the price of the book.

Submitting photos will end in October. <--- To be specified later.

    Vote, please, to be counted.

Would you like to have your Photograph in the "Boards.ie Photography Book 2008"? 128 votes

Yes, I would like to be part of this project.

What if the pictures suck? Like ALL my pics suck. Would you maybe not be better off with a peer-voted system for choosing entries?

    No, thank you.
Well, no. It is opened Book to all Boards.ie members with respect to some basic rules of the society (as well as Boards.ie). And it is everyone's opportunity to post her/his picture.

Would you have to submit a photo by the 14th or just make it known that you would like to contribute a photo by that time?

If it's the latter, i'm in.

edit: Screw it, i'm in either way.

This thread is only for counting participants. I have already edited the first post.
We will decide when to close submitting the photos, but that should be at the end of October.

Im in, What way is this going to work, everybody submits an Image/Images and then a selection Panel/Vote decides which ones make the final cut, will there be text to accompany the pictures?

Jesus if it keeps growing at this rate we'll be into hundreds!

Maybe the poll should be closed a little earlier so as to avoid random people signing up? Costs do go up based on how many pages, and I think it'll lose charity appeal if the cost is prohibitive.

Could we maybe set a total page count? It'd be nice for each photographer to have a page each...

I'd be up for it, but I don't mind dropping out/sharing a page or whatever if the numbers are getting too high

pricing guidelines with Blurb (just as an example...) here

You have to allow for shipping as well Sinead, so add roughly €2 to those prices.

I did a run of thirty six 8x10 hardcover books of 40 pages from blurb which cost US$1,122.92 giving a unit cost of US$31.20 (about €22). The boards book will be probably 40-80 pages in price, therefore dearer. The 7x7 books are lovely but a bit on the small side, 8x10s or 10x8s are better for showing off your work.

We need to cap the number of paid-up entrants, as above 80 will make the book too dear. In fact with an 80 page book you get something like 76 usable pages, not sure but I can check if needs be. The poll is fine to run over 80 though, it's when the chips are down and the money is required that the numbers matter.

    Hugh

Shouldn't it also get cheaper (at a unit level) the more you order though?

So if 80 people are in it, at least 80 will be buying it? Or does that matter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

    No, thank you.
It'd be cheaper at unit level, but how many do we order? Just the ones we want ourselves? Or do we order more for charity sales?

Its gonna take some working out...

Also - what format? I know the portrait and landscape layouts are nicer than the square, but then you're potentially excluding a lot of people from their first choice of photo as I understand it. I want landscape myself for the photo I have in mind but I'm sure a lot would disagree. So maybe square format is better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,155 ✭✭✭PopeBuckfastXVI

    No, thank you.
Wouldn't a square format allow both portrait, landscape & square, while potentially leaving room for a little writing in the whitespace such as

    Title
    Photographer
    Location
    Date
    Description

    or some such?

Yes it would, but, square from Blurb is only 7 x 7 which is smallish. I have printed up both 7x7 and 10x8 and the 10x8s are a lot nicer. Portraits can still be put in landscape books and vice versa, just more whitespace around them.

Sinead, about the number of books, I think each person would have to commit by forking out the requisite amount of cash, so if you think you could sell three books, then pay 3 x the unit cost and sell them yourself for whatever price you can get, and give the balance to charity. In other words put the onus on each individual to sell rather than the group. It's a pretty thankless task ...

On blurb, there's always the possibility of re-ordering more books.

Thanks man! I'm afraid the border thing is here to stay!

Guys you gotta get as many people involved as possible. I'm pretty sure the unit cost will drop alot more than the increased cost of extra photos - once you hit a given volume. It's a good ol' break-even analysis!
