Advice needed on lockers

Anyone know what time will I need to be in at on the first Monday to get a locker in the Arts Block....?
Are the lockers there all the same ?
I know that the big ones in the other areas go fast. But not sure about the Arts Block.
It just says on the website...
"application forms are available from the security desk on the first day of term".
But I thought they give you the key there and then.
Do you already need to be registered to apply? If you are not registered, and you can't till later that day, how do the porters know then that you are a TCD student?
(also will there be lockers in Luce Hall this year?)

You'll need to be in at about 6. It's not until after registration they're given out though as far as I know.

Nope - you get an application form from the security desk just inside the arts block door, then you fill it out and drop it back at some point later that day to the Superintendent's office (it's a few doors down from the security desk) and get your key then. So, as Antithetic says, you need to be in as early as possible to get the form, but after that you don't need to join the second queue to get your key; you can go and sleep and then come back when the crowd has died down.

For incoming freshers, registration takes place during Freshers' Week. Lockers are given out on the Monday of week one, which takes place the week after FW. So if you're a new student you should already be registered by then, and if you're a returning student you'll have your old card to show them.

So just to clarify - For a new student, can we get the forms during Freshers Week and collect the Key the following monday? or is it all done on the monday?

Is this only for the Arts block? What bout the hamilton?

Forms can't be collected until first thing Monday morning in week one (i.e., the week after Freshers' Week) - and just to reiterate, that really means "first thing" if you want a decent locker in the Arts Block. Not sure of exactly when the deadline for turning them back in is, but I know it's not immediately on Monday morning - probably the end of week one or thereabouts, but check that when you get the form.

And the Hamilton lockers are doled out through the Arts block security desk/supernintendo's office too, as are any other ones (I think there's some in the Museum Building or something?); they'll ask you when you get to the desk where you want a locker.

There's Hamilton (very few of these), Lloyd, Panoz (or East End - where most of the lockers in the 'Hamilton Building' are) and maybe some other places down near the hamilton.

Personally I always went with the Hamilton or Panoz lockers purely for the fact it's 24 hour (which was very handy when studying in college on the Sunday).

If you just want a bog standard locker just come in normally and pick up a form. Come back with the form completed and the cash dollars when you're free. No point queuing, there are now plenty of lockers.

    Pretty good.
Nobody has mentioned the (not-so)important issue for the cost involved for acquiring such a locker.

    Did anybody ask?

There is a 15 euro deposit and 15euro rental charge. The deposit you can get back at the end of the year, or you can keep it as the deposit for next year.

Also big lockers do go first. If you're in early you'll basically get to choose where your locker is and which size it is. SO you may for example be offered a big locker on the 3rd floor or a small locker near the arts block cafe/ed burke.

Oh in a general locker update, many of the lockers on the ground (2nd floor) and basement of the arts block have been replaced. if you have renewed one of these lockers for the following year your stuff is in a black sack in the cloak room and you need to go to the superintendents office to get the key to your new/old locker. You don't need to pay the rental till terms starts but can still get the new key.

Would it be recommended to get lockers, do most students prefer to have them??

Well not most students, cos only a minority have them. And there is far less of a queue now that there are more lockers. Like the first respondent says, you just need to be in by 6pm in the first Monday of term to pick up the form

Theyre definatley very handy to have. Especially if you have a few very heavy books, sports gear, etc etc.
I got a locker last year, was well worth going in early.
Theyre quite small, but big enough to hold a small bag and a book or too. (Or a small mangonel, tools and a cardboard box :P)

Just to point out in the last couple of years there has been no problem getting a locker in the Lloyd or East End/Panoz if you come in at 9/10 on the first Monday. You're only going to be looking at a 6 a.m. start if you want a locker in the Arts Block or Hamilton.

Only two types lockers worth getting imho are:

    1. Large Arts block ones
    2. Hamilton / Panoz ones as they have 24hour access.

DON'T FORGET TO TICK THE BOX FOR TWO YEARS.

Save yourself the hassle next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

Or if you do forget to tick the box, remember to go and ask the supernintendo next May/June if you can keep it for another year.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 8,260 Mod ✭✭✭✭Jonathan

    Oh and another thing iirc.

There is generally 2 queues. One for the locker sheets and one for the SNES.

Once you get your locker sheet you can come back any during that first week to the SNES when the queue is gone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭Peslo

    By SNES you mean....

    Supernintendo Chalmers.

I think it is Norman Richardson. The name sounds familiar but I may be wrong.

    Have a gander here.

Why, what different types are there?

Like I've read here that there are ones in different places (I'd probably be going for lloyd/hamilton anyway cos I think CS is around that general area) and then apparently there's slightly bigger ones too? Are they the only differences?

Yeah that's it. The big ones in the Arts Block and the ones in the Hamilton are the first to go. The Hamilton ones are the same size, I think, as the Panoz and everywhere else. But if you don't care and just want one in the Panoz or wherever don't bother coming in early just pop in at 10 to 9 or even later that day or (as I did) two weeks later and you can pick up a locker then.

/me wonders if the SU elections will feature someone saying they'll get bigger lockers in other areas of campus as an election promise.

Maybe I'll run for election this year in that case. What was the name of the horribly racist. conservative, homophobic Texan guy that ran around when you did Myth? He posted here for awhile. I think me need another candidate on a similar ticket :)

I'm sure there's many people who could fit that description.

The Texan accident might be difficult to find though

I believe you're referring to Chris Gambino, and he ran in 2003 (twice I think, since the second time was for the welfare officer position which came up) and 2004. I think he's in Iraq at the moment btw.

Yep, thats the one, we need another Cambino.

ok see if I have this rite-- in at 6am monday after freshers week, thats the 6th oct, for a big locker in the arts bldg...? 'm looking to get a big locker as I'll be commuting on a motorbike and i'm not trudging all round campus in leathers and carrying a lid...
where's the superintendents desk? is that the security office or in the arts building?

    thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Yep, you'll know you're in the right place by the que. Also you can check in backs and stuff at the arts block and the Hamilton, that will probably be easier then a locker.

The que will start at the main doors to the arts block and go down the ramp. As you've a motorbike you shouldn't have as many problems as others trying to get in for 6am.

I'm bothered- I ticked the box to keep my locker for two years and went in to give in my key in June, but the fella there said to hang onto my key.

Just went back to my locker and they went and changed the lock. What's up with that? I want it back!

Did they also change the locker?

They've changed a load of lockers this summer. If you have ticked to keep the locker and spoken to the SI then go to his office in the next while and ask him was your locker one of the ones that was changed. He'll give you the new key and your stuff can be rescued from the arts block cloak room.

If they haven't changed your locker they may simply have made a mistake so go in and just point this fact out to them. They change the locks on lockers for which they don't get the keys back and that haven't been renewed.

does the engineering soc give out lockers for a euro or something in Week 2?

Yeah. Unless they've changed lockers though they're pretty small.

If you're an engineer you should have 24 hour access though.

Sorry if this is is a stupid question but I just wanted to be sure before I set my alarm for 5am, can postgrads can get lockers in the Arts block without any hassle? I missed out on the lockers in the postgrad reading room and don't want to queue only to be told they're for undergrads only.

2 classmates of mine had lockers in the Arts block during 2006-2008 whilst the rest of us had them in the 1937. I don't believe anyone had any hassle.

5am? :eek:I thought it was ok as long as you got in before 6pm?

Regarding lockers in the Lloyd institute, Can I swipe in there all night? I know I can get into the Hamilton all night but I've never tried to swipe into the Lloyd? Does it depend on what course I'm doing?

As far as I know, first thing in the morning if you want one in the Arts block....any time during Monday if you want one down the Hamilton end of campus.

In early if you want one in the hamiltion building itself. No rush for east end ones.

Assuming it hasn't changed you can't swipe into the Lloyd after a certain amount of time. Maybe as a postgrad you might be able to but I dunno.

So there's one queue outside the arts block for all the lockers regardless of location?

There wont be any rush for those in the Pharmacy building (Panoz I think?!)?

How big are the lockers available? I'm a JF Eng and would like to store my kick-scooter somewhere during the day.

Does the Arts Block open early this Monday? Or is getting in early just to get a place in the queue?

Hamilton ones are school sized. 4 vertical.
Arts block ones are double sized.

Nope, only a very small amount of the Arts block ones are double sized. The rest are the same as Hamilton.
