The 1ba4 labs on monday and thursday are split up so you won't be in all the time.

Term dates have changed for this year I'm afraid. For some reason, TCD is no longer following the classic Oxbridge 3-term structure; there are now just two 12 week terms as seen in many other universities such as UCC. Which sucks.

...Anyway, back on-topic, that 1BA5 lab on the timetable is only for a few weeks in Spring, and you only do 1BA2 and 1ba3 up until Easter, so in the last term you'll have a lot of time off- we had Fridays off last term last year! :D Oh, and notes are only of limited use in CS, i found, it's all about practicing and trying stuff out in your own time

Edited for being unnecessarily patronising :P :P

I think he's implying most CS people spent Friday drinking pints of whiskey in mahaffey's. Alas, those days are gone now that its been replaced by the dreaded "lumbard" hole.

So what's the story with books and all? When will we be told what books we need?

Or will we just be "advised" and stuff?

What kinda books do we usually have to get?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 580 ✭✭✭karlr42

Get Digitial Design by Mano for 1BA4(you do experiments out of it), and Data Communications and Networking by B Forouzan for 1BA5(you're expected to read it). That's pretty much it, anything else is discretionary.
You're given a book for 1BA2 that covers everything you'll do during the year, and 1BA1 gives you a maths workbook-kinda thing. You're not expected to have anything, just walk in with a pen and paper and go with the flow, you're told everything you'll need.
FWIW, I bought Digitial Design and it was a great help to be able to read it anytime. All the other courses reading won't particularly help, it's doing.
Also, all this information is on https://www.cs.tcd.ie/courses/ba/localMerged/jf/ if you can access it, so check there first with questions.

Is there any 2nd, 3rd or 4th Years who have, and are willing to sell, Digital Design by Mano. It's for 1BA4.

    Quick response appreciated :)

We were urged to buy this one for the sake of passing the course. This book can't be taken out of the library either.
So if there's any 2nd years out there with the book, let them know that the first years will buy them off them. ASAP

    1. Go to google
    2. Type in 'site:tcd.ie subject librarian'
    3. Find your subject librarian
    4. E-mail them to let them know you need this book (and tell them the lecturer who said you need it - they'll either order some in or bump up some from stacks)
    5. Take out book (should be available fairly soon after)

There are copies on shelf of Mano, guaranteed. If Coghlan told you they're not there, then he's lying.

He said, (more or lesss exactly this), that there are only five copies and that they cannot be taken from the library.
Prior to this he hypothesized that in theroy one could make an attempt to pass the course without reading the book, but strongly suggested that we do not do this. At which point he told us to find some second years that have no further use for the book.

Seeing how there's only 5 books in the College and there are ~ 40 in the class, I am speaking on behalf of the class here.

If anybody has a copy of the book, or can put me in contact with somebody who has a book, please PM me ASAP.

    Thanks.

I wouldn't take anything Coughlan says too seriously, he's a bit... unfocussed, shall I say? He is wrong about there being 5 copies, he's probably working off old info there.
There are, without doubt, copies in the library, hell, I'll check tomorrow to prove the point. You will definitely need it, it's a great resource and you'll also need it if you want to prepare for your labs ahead of time. Lot's of handy tables in it; though most of it will only make sense by the end of the year(if you're lucky).
And I won't sell you my book, I paid good money(€70) for it(so I could write notes in it), and I want it as a reference for this year. Not many(2, as I recall) others in my class bought it(those who did have old editions)- it's in the library!
Take Myth's advice, he knows what he's talking about.

Yeeeeeah, I did notice that... Though I thought letting us off 2hrs 35minutes early was a nice touch!!

I am going to the library in the morn so I that I will know for myself what the story is.
But I'm sure you can appreciate, karl, that there are others like yourself who may want a copy for themselves for notes, quick refernce etc.

The SU bookshop DEFO doesn't have any.

Indeed, I appreciate that, in fact(for this particular book only) I would say it's a good idea getting some sort of copy for yourself- it's useful for anything to do with binary number system and boolean algebra. But people can do what I did- save up and buy it.
I got it in Hodges and Figgis(sp?) on Naussau St., top floor.

Coghlan has been stating that there are only five books in the library and that none of them are LEN since I started first year. Don't take it to heart. There were roughly 8 or 9 copies of Mano on LEN a few years ago, doubt the number has changed since. Also, considering that it is more than possible to rotate books between a bunch of you (or, SHOCK HORROR, work together) and add in the fact that very few in first year CS actually bother to venture into the library until 2nd/3rd year, there has invariably been little issue with it.

Oh, and you definitely can't really pass DLD without Mano in some way, that doesn't, however, mean you need it all the time. Head into the library every two weeks, do an hour or two of revision on DLD. Write your own notes. Keep this up regularly, even less frequently, and you can do quite well in the subject. Share a book with someone when it comes to labs.

DLD is not a hard subject, just quite different to anything you've done previously. Good luck./

Excellent advice there. I can't add much to it, just agree you have to keep up with it constantly, because it's a world unto itself that's impossible to drop into and understand without time.
But I loved it once I understood what was happening and it all came together, looked forward to the exam!

    Hi Peslo,

    Welcome to CS.

The searchable catalogue of the college library is online at http://www.tcd.ie/Library/ -- hit the 'Online Catalogue' link and on the page that pops up go into the main catalogue (from 1920). Searching for digital design comes up with eight copies listed in SLEN (which are the books undergrads are able to borrow from the hamilton library). Go upstairs in the hamilton library and on the left find the shelves that have books under 621.38.

With all that said, you'll have a hard time getting your hands on a copy of it when exam time comes and it's one of the few courses you really will want the textbook for. I've had my copy of mano for many years and don't intend to sell it; bought new in hodges+figgis back in the day. If you've got access to a credit card you can get copies cheap on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Design-3rd-Morris-Mano/dp/0130621218) or else try upstairs in chapters bookstore on parnel st. (Ive spotted a copy there from time to time). Don't bother buying it new.. use a copy from the library until you can get your hands on a reasonably priced second hand copy.

Yeah you're right, I went to the Library today and I found 8 copies of the new edition. I took one out myself so I'm gonna get a good start on it this week while I try find a few secon-hand copies if there are any available. But when ya think about it 70 euro isn't a huge for this sorta book, and at the same time somebody selling theres(that they're not using) could make a few quid easily.

Yeah I picked up a copy too during lunch...I sat down reading it, there were three copies left when I sat down and within 15 minute three people from our course came and took those copies, so at the moment they're all out on loan.

Got one of the library copies :) I know a 3rd year with the 3rd edition... I wonder how different it is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 580 ✭✭✭karlr42

Not very AFAIK, just less emphasis on HDL(which you don't need to know about(until 2nd year, and even then it's a different language) and can easily skip). Maybe a few different end-of-chapter connections, nothing that will affect your learning.

    Few tips on Digital Design:

-The 4th edition is not necessary. The 3rd edition is fine, and even the 2nd edition would do you though I wouldn't buy that personally.
-There's a pdf online somewhere (of the 2nd and 3rd editions, 2nd one is better quality though), which you should find easily enough. I lasted until about April using the pdf of the second edition last year for labs etc. (I really wouldn't recommend studying from a PDF though)
-Do not pay €70 for the 4th edition unless you like wasting money. Last year I bought a second hand copy (perfect condition) of the 3rd edition online for a measly $3. Postage was $7, so in total I payed $10, or ~€7. Had I bought the 4th edition in Hodges Figgis, I'd have payed 1000% of that price.

And where to buy the book for such a low price? Well, someone's posted a link to amazon, which has some for low prices, and also someone on here recommended the site www.abebooks.com to me last year and I'd like to recommend it again. See: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=mano&sts=t&tn=digital+design&x=0&y=0 for a list of all the copies of Digital Design available. Unfortunately, from a quick glance I see that while there're loads of really cheap ($1 with shipping under $10) 1st and 2nd editions on there, the cheapest 3rd edition one seems to be about $14 with shipping of about $11, although that's still pretty good. Make sure you do check shipping costs before ordering from there, however, since some of the retailers charge extortionate amounts for shipping (for some reason it tends to be the ones from the US, whereas ones from say, India (where my copy came from) or Hong Kong, bizarrely have substantially lower shipping costs).
