Should I Appeal, 1% away from an A

I got 84% in History, 1% away from an A2. Should I appeal? I dont need more points but I worked more for History than any other subject and was aiming for an A. Should I appeal? Im I likely to go up to an A2.

Teachers' opinion welcome in particular. Thanks.

Appeal imho. You've worked for around two years for the exam and if you think you've been marked unfairly then go for the appeal. It would be a nice thing to have, an A in LC History. :)

    Yes..

Appeal if you feel you deserved it and the marking wasn't applied appropriately. While it may be insignificant in the greater scheme of things, bad marking shouldn't happen, and you deserve a fair result based on the work you've done

If it really bothers you then appeal, once you get your course though, how you got on in the LC becomes irrelevent. Ye won't loose marks anyway.

It's the Leaving Cert. It's like finish 4th in the special olympics.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Teachers' opinion welcome in particular. Thanks.

This teacher says unless it makes a difference for your course leave it be. Thank your lucky stars you got an A2, there are plenty kids in the country who try their absolute best and get a D3 in Ordinary Level and are thrilled with it.

YOU know you did enough work for/deserved/should have got an A1. Part of being an adult is knowing these things and not needing a big sticker or badge to say so.

In a few years, nobody will care what you got in your Leaving. It doesn't mean a lot really, in the overall scale of things.

doesn't matter if the whole world doesn't care, if OP cares then defintely appeal......part of being an adult is listening to your own heart and mind and not being influenced by the posse.

p.s please read the OP properly :D

Go for it, if they realise that you are 1% away from an A2 then they might search for that extra couple of marks, the people who mark the papers arent going to disturb their quotas by bringing you down(they do have quotas, people say they dont but they do!)
It will only matter to you in the end, but if you worked hard and feel you are justified the A2 then just do it. You wouldnt do down enough to lose your points if you are just 1% away from an A2!!

That's totally irrelevant.. Some people are delighted with a D3 because they feel that their work has paid off, they got what they deserve, and fair play to them.. For many, it's a great achievement.. However, others could be very disappointed with a B1 or A2, as they felt that they have not got what they deserve and that their work hasn't been sufficiently rewarded... So if you felt you deserved a higher grade, then you shouldn't "thank your lucky stars"

Your leaving certificate results are important for 5 days. From the wednesday that they come out to the monday that the cao comes out.

After that nobody cares what you got.

Well, it made sense when my teacher said it in class. My teacher is ancient and goes to that conference thingy every year

i dont want to get into an argument, but when the Chief Examiners report comes out every year and they document the grades and percentages of people who sat that exam, and they compare it to the last few years, why is it that the results are always so similar? Ive seen a few examiners reports from www.Examinations.ie It seems too conincidental to have the results all the same...
and i do realise that they look at a sample of all the papers and then change the marking scheme, Its not just thought up, written down and set it stone for that year

no....i want you to explain statistics......i want a 4 page essay here in the morning :D

yeah the law of averages and the numbers involved 50,000+ says they will be roughly the same percentages but when you look at individual subjects like this years accounting which a lot of people found rock hard - will the percentage of grades be the same as previous years? i'd say so

There's a chance of your marks going down. But if your points are safe above the level needed for your subject than I would say why not.

I had two different markings in my history script. One was in red pen and the other in green pen...does this mean that mine was picked outta the bag first and then checked again...Coz thank God for that second check, your wan with the red pen was taking marks off me left right and centre!

There wasnt an argument here when i started writing the post..
and i have no reverse gear.. just plough through or go throught every post and knock it down til it doesnt have a leg to stand on!!
there are quotas in the sense that if there are too few A's they will need to go through the B Papers to bring up the amount of A's and the opposite too..

Red pen is the assistant examiner (the people who do most of the marking). Green pen is the advising examiner (the more experienced people who monitor the assistants and make sure they are on standard).

A script marked in green pen as well as red is therefore more likely to have been marked accurately, as it has been monitored by the advising examiner. it is therefore less likely to change on appeal.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 27,315 CMod ✭✭✭✭spurious

The red pen is the original corrector, the green is their advising examiner (usually someone who has corrected for years at many levels).

Your script could have been sent to the AE as part of the random sample of 20, or in a selection from one of the groups of 100s, or the original corrector may have wanted guidance on how he/she was correcting. Either way, it sounds like it worked out well for you.

if thats the case then surely all your history classmates should view their scripts and if theres no green ink then appeal like crazy

sounds like you were pulled out of the bag unless it was the one marker and red just made them real angry and green made them normal :D

I thought this would be the case too I have to say and when I started to apply for jobs after college I had removed the leaving cert results from my CV at the time. I ended up putting them back on after a few queries about it. I was suprised at the level of interest but I suppose its a benchmark state exam /shrug

No, its not its what i meant when i said quotas, and its only a slight difference in my opinion!
and yes, i am on the fence as i havent had a script sent back, but in this case i would tell the OP to get it rechecked!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

I got my course, yet I'm still getting two, maybe three rechecked.

Why? Because I'm still unhappy with my overall LC results. As far as I'm concerned, I set myself a target at the start of the year of certain grades in certain subjects and for the majority of them I failed to reach that target. That why I'm rechecking them, because I still feel I should have done better.

The fact that I already received my first choice has absolutely **** all to do with that.

Might as well go for it. You won't lose the B1 (or at least it'd be very surprising if you did).

On the other hand, you don't need it and by the time you get the result back, you won't care about it anymore.

I think it's about €37.50 per subject (refunded if you get awarded a higher grade) but I may be wrong about that.
