Just wondering what people's opinions are on sit up's

Over the years I'm sure I've done a few hundred thousand sit ups I don't think I've really benefited I usually see more benefit from an exercise that involves a few muscle groups than ones that isolate's the abs

I was reading something about the trainers in the navy seals advise against any exercise that isolates a muscle groups especially sit ups

    thoughts?

If it's just a six pack you're after, then situps alone aren't going to get you there. However, situps are a valuable part of exercise regimes in general, as you need a strong core to sustain heavy workloads.

I foresee a very pedantic thread...

    Very true.

Meh, there are much more effective ways to work on your core than sit-ups - overhead squats, captain's chairs, planks etc. I'd be hard pushed to find a scenario that would warrant sit-ups as ever being "valuable" to be honest.

OP, it also depends on what you want to achieve or what results you want from the sit-ups; they'll have different merits depending on what your goal is.

I think in terms of a hierachy of core exercises i certainly would put it in the following order

    1. Reverse ab curls - advancing on to hanging leg raises
    2. Plank - advancing to one leg at a time out to the side for time
    3. Russian twists - advancing to using 15-20kg reclined
    4. Weighted crunches - use more weight over time

Normal crunches or done on a ball are possibly the most over rated, less productive exercise being done in gyms today. If you have to do more than 15-20reps on stomach exercises (or any exercise for that matter) to 'feel' it then you need to move on to a more challenging option.

I thought sit ups were only to strengthen the abs for boxing etc,we used to do thousands in taekwondo ostensibly to stop us getting winded in comps.
