If i was you, I'd be picking up that phone and demanding to speak to a manager. Make him/her explain why you've had no reply and in the meantime, CC your email to editorial@argus.ie, editor@dundalkdemocrat.ie and editorial@dundalkleader.com

Stuff like this makes me so mad!

Let's put some perspective on this. Bad service and poor response from a restaurant. Yes, bad form. But letters to 3 newpapers about it? Come on! It's on thing posting on a messageboard for a moan, and Emailling the company involved but it's hardly news-worthy is it? If it is, then by way of balance, we should write to the local papers every time we get decent service, or nice food somewhere.

Consistent bad service and rudeness from a restaurant passing themselves off as a fine dining establishment...

Its not the first time i've heard bad reports about that place. Its time they were exposed for the shambles they are. Its not news, no. But its local interest. The same as tree's being planted in a park or a new business opening - not news, but of local interest.

If they are being so appallingly bad then people need to know about it.

These would appear to be isolated cases, I have been going there at least once a month since it opened and have always had good service, but I only go at lunchtime on weekdays, if was as bad as you claim to have experienced, it would be closed a long time ago. Bigneacy as a business person yourself, you should understand that its mostly those who have a bad time who take the time to comment on a business

absolutley, the good reviews very rarely bubble to the surface. I haven't had a bad review, and thats the way I would strive to keep things. I know one thing for sure though, if i ever got a bad complaint I certainly wouldn't ignore it... it'd be top of my prioritys.

I've been to The Left Bank many times , both for lunch midweek and dinner at weekends .
Food has always been perfect , with generous portions and cooked perfectly .

No complaints about the service either .

Just from reading this thread and seeing peoples favourite takeaways and the same ones mentioned again and again, such as Tonys, Roma etc...

What makes there food so good that you would go back and go further to praise them here, im just interested to no what exactly is it as in is it the quality of food, portion sizes, service, price, special offers etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭bigneacy

    1. quality of food - most important, the food has to be good and the place has to be clean. even a whisper of bad hygiene and its off my list.
    2. portion sizes - i specifically don't go to mullens any more because the portion sizes are so poor. average size would be tony's or isle de france
    3. service - bad customer service would put me right off. a smile and a friendly hello costs nothing, no smile and bad customer services costs everything.
    4. price - low prices aren't really important, if the place is the same as everywhere else and are just as good if not better then it gets my vote
    5. special offers - don't really use them but a lot of people would i suppose.

having just been reminded when you mentioned the roma, i must mention something that happened a few weeks back, Sunday evening, went in and expected a crowd ( 6.30 ish) but lo and behold we had our pick of seats, recession at its best though probably not helped by the offers that the likes of the kingfisher has i'd imagine considering the roma don't and have never to my recall done any kind of offers .

anyhow, sat down the back facing out with my dining partner facing me. there were maybe 4 other tables occupied. while we where eating a crowd arrived in, 6 adults, and a buggy with baba in situ. all very respectable looking. they sat down and where immediately approached by one of the girls (foreign national, very friendly) who in embarassed tone told them they couldn't stay as they have a buggy. (i do know there is a sign on the door saying no buggies, but i would have assumed this was dependent on how busy it was at the time) They looked at her kinda stunned but before they had time to react one of the older ladies who i know has been there years came behind her and said ' no no sure yis can come up to the front (seats facing counter ) we'll sort you out'. At this, the young girl said 'no he said no way'. i knew she most have meant the boss man, who in all my years going into the roma as never so much as proffered a smile to i or as far as i can see any of his patrons.

But the older woman persists and says' it'll be grand and takes the buggy on up as they follow behind. they sit down, and next thing, boss guy comes from kitchen, beckons the younger one, has a word, and returns to the kitchen. the young one then goes to the re seated ppl, talks animatedly and they get up and leave without much fuss to be honest.

We were gobsmacked ! the poor girl was almost in tears as well. i can't understand the mentality and ignorance of the man. I mean fair enough if the place was jammed but it was empty and not much fuller when we left. the buggy would have been of little impedence where it was. 6 adults at perhaps 15 - 20 quid a head. the man has the manners of a spud. Disgusting and cowardly way to treat ppl.

As regard the question, cleanliness and and good chips are about the only reasons you go to the roma...........they're miserable so and so's portion wise and the owners are far from friendly (though the staff are fine)

ventured into McGeoughs for tea during week. I usually stick to the warm chicken salad which is yum and massive (€10) but they are doing a deal where you can have a 2 course with tea /coffee for €15.50. (sure i couldn't afford NOT to have that !) so i had the starter and a main and my OH had main and Dessert. Warm chicken salad is one of the starters so happy days ! and i have to say the steak with all the trimmings for main was cooked to perfection ( its amazing how hard it is to get it just to my liking ) medium rare closer to rare ! The oh s dessert is a set one of a medley which i have to say, me not being a dessert person was just sublime ! i Actually don't know how they can afford to feed ppl for that price. Highly recommended. (I'll even forego the peevement of being charged for two bottles of coke in lieu of what was a pint of splash coke, and 5.50 for a 'glass' of wine which is literally a glass rather than a 1/4 bottle which they used to do, but you can't have everything i guess )

Sorry lads but it has to be said that for a quality meal, you have to keep your options open to areas outside of Dundalk as well. Hands down the best place I have eaten is a little place right on my doorstep, just north of the border. Garvey's out the Armagh road makes the meanest panini I've ever tasted, and I've tasted both good and bad in many places (eg... good = The Copper Kettle, bad = Jockey's; great pub grub but the paninis are to be avoided). I usually end up going for their Chicken Chilli and Cheese panini when we eat there so can't personally speak for many of their other dishes, but their Sunday turkey and ham is to die for; meat cooked to perfection, chunky vegetables and I sucked through my mash and didn't find a single lump! Their stir fries are also superb, and their side salads are dressed in a sauce that makes eating salad tolerable! (I'm not a huge healthy eater .)

Service is brilliant with friendly, attentive staff and a chilled, relaxed atmosphere during the week. We have been the only customers in the room on numerous occasions, and some say that an empty restaurant is never a good sign but this is likely because many people don't realise that there is a restaurant to the back of their pub. Sundays are chaotic though, and in order to gaurantee yourself a table book well in advance; we went down one Sunday evening and waited in the bar to be served; we ended up waiting a good 40 minutes and ate in the bar room! However, the quality of service and food has never deteriorated from our first visit, and the prices are extremely reasonable, especially if you pay in Sterling; 3 main courses for €20!

I know I'm starting to sound like a bit of a brochure here but my family are probably the place's best customers; we are in a habit of popping down for dinner every couple of weeks. Nice places deserve to do well now more than ever. We've recommended it to many of our friends and family and they've never been disappointed. A must visit for top-class food, ambience and service, at a very reasonable rate! :D

For great food, a brilliant menu, decent service and value; I think you can't pass Darver Castle at the moment.

would disagree wholeheartedly with the above, of all the sitdown places of a similiar type the roma is the best.

the cutlery is stainless steel, and clean as are the plates and cups, unless you get one with a chip or crack why would you complain. if it aint broke don't fix it. anyway i feel the green crockery gives it more of an english caf type feel !

it's ridiculous to suggest that they salvage old food or drink. the fact that it's packed out with people waiting to be seated when there are plently of vacant seats round the corner in the europa is testament to the popularity and quality of the food.

the service from those longer term waitresses has always been very pleasant in my experience. my only gripe with the place isa when buying takeout the owner woman can be a bit dour from time to time.

of all the takewaway sitdown diners to give out about, there are plently higher on the list than the roma.
I had one of the above experiences in roma today. popped in for something to eat and was parched with thirst. I asked the waitress for a bottle of fanta lemon only to watch her pour a small glass from the bottle and return it to the fridge. when she brought it down I asked for the rest in of the drink and she told me they didn't give out the bottle. Somewhat confused by this answer I called her back to ask why when I had ordered a bottle of fanta had I just received a small glass of it. I assumed €1.90 was buying the bottle not 2 mouthfuls. She said I could talk to the manager who finally appeared after 10 minutes and was not at all nice. When I argued that the menu doesn't state 'a small glass of fanta at €1.90 ' and I asked for a bottle she said well we don't do that here. As fanta lemon isn't a popular drink I suppose it will lie in the fridge until the next unfortunate customer asks for a 'flat' half glass of fanta!!!!Surely trading standards are being abused in Roma?? I will certainly not be going back in there. Also a man working behind the counter threw me dirty looks the whole time I was there....as if I should not question their dodgey drinks policy. Overall I wasn't impressed. Food was below average and totally overpriced.

Spicy Bites takeaway on Riverlane do a great Kebab.

Been there twice and tried 2 different Kebabs and both were fab. They do other Indian dishes as well but I haven't tried them and I don't think I will as the Kebabs are too good to pass :-)

Always seems to be very quite when I've passed. I'd say people haven't got wind of it yet but top notch Kebabs.

the lisdoo is bang-on and very reasonable ,
fitzpatricks wouldent be my cup of tea ,,the service is very sloooooow and if you ask for anything slightly different like "no onions " with your meal your gonna have hassle .
