Hi all my wife is looking to start self defence classes. Living in D15, local would be good but she doesn't mind travelling. She bit nervous about starting very small and light. Any body know were there is one starting up soon would be great.

    Cheers

I have a Taekwon-Do class in Castleknock which might suit her.
What exactly is she looking for?

Bujinkan has self-defence applications and I'm accepting new students for an 8 week beginners course starting in a few weeks - it's in the Liberties if she doesn't mind travelling a bit. Highly suitable for women too.

Check my website below for details.

lots of martial arts/ self defence giong on in the coolmine sports centre. last time i saw there was a choice from:
judo - over 20 years and going strong
    kung fu
    Aikdo - going for 20 years+
karate/self defence classes going for 20 years + with Tom Ward .
    think there might be taekwondo.

and just up the same street at Verona FC there is kick boxing.

Hey you should delete that post before the mods see it or you'll probably get an infraction. See the sticky right at the top of the forum.

OP I would recommend Jon's class in Castleknock, he takes a different approach to most taekwondo teachers. TKD is good fun and will get you fit too.

i dont mean to be bad but that is bullsh!t.........click the link and it leads you to there website headed "the very best in mixed martial arts" advertising as an mma club and it is a pure money spinner the "instructors" as far as i can see or remember have never competed in any recent mma shows and i genuinely think this is someone trying to rip people off using the mma name, anybody else agree???

Who needs to compete when you can put pictures of Chuck Liddell on your website

As Roper pointed out, no discussion.

Thread has to be seriously modded now. Judomad and muckwarrior serving one week bans.

I think that you need to carefully assess the difference between a self defence class and a martial arts class.
There is a big difference and I teach both. In a good self defence class you can get some good basic awareness ,threat evaluation, hard drilling under pressure and nasty life saving skills in a few lessons.
In a martial arts class this could take a long time.

Thats interesting Martin, how do you come by that assumption?

hey martin you seem to have very well thought out opinions on martial arts and self defence. do you mind giving us a brief history of your experience in martial arts/sd? I understand you a JKD practitioner with over 20 years training in martial arts. is that true?

    Hi Jon
Martial arts classes usually have beginner ,intermediate and advanced levels and it may take years to get to advanced techniques.
In a self defence class the emphasis should be to get the student to be confident to defend themselves very quickly eg in a couple of lessons/hours. One of the main things is to raise awareness and avoidance of trouble and if it kicks off to have the confidence to hit hard ,fast and get away to safety.

In relation to the other question
My martial arts training goes back more than 30 years and my story and lineage is on our website www.jkdireland.com
My background is in Karate,Kickboxing,Kali. I major in Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do which I have practiced for the past 21 years.

Would agree with that. Thanks Martin

If your wife is looking to do a self defence course in Dublin I would highly recomend doing Krav Maga, it is an Isralei military martial art, designed solely for the purpose of quick, easy self defence. I done the weekend course a few years ago and would love to have done it full time but I live 100 miles from Dublin so its not that easy for me. The guy (Patrick) runs 12 week courses aswell, which can be done on a ongoing basis. The weekend course was made up of about 50% women, all ages, young girls going travelling, middle aged women and men working or living in the city, guys like me who like martial arts, no level of skill was required and by the end of the weekend teenage girls were flipping 6ft guys over their shoulder and kicking them in the balls.
If you want instant self defence do this course, it wastes no time on style or tradition, i learned more in a weekend than I did in a year at kung fu.

    www.kravmagaireland.com

This is the place I went, Patrick made the whole weekend good crack and I lost nearly half a stone weight.
I will deffinately do this course again.

Does your martial art curriculum follow this trend? having beginner, inter and adv levels before you get to the advanced techs? Why would anyone teach fighting over years and years ( martial arts by your description) when the important principles can be thought over a couple of lessons/hours (SD by your description).

That sounds amazing. It really is incredible to see what the human body can do to another, once your training partner is compliant.

    Guys,

can we spin this back around to dealing with the OP's question?

I can create a new thread for discussion with Martin if people so wish.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 397 ✭✭motherfunker

If you want to pick holes in it, thats fine but the guy asked for self defence classes for his wife. This course offers quick simple lessons in self defence that are useable by even the smallest, lightest of girls or guys. The flipping 6ft guys was just a way of getting my point accross that your size does not matter. I was not trying to bum up my martial art or get business for myself, the guy asked for self defence classes for his wife but I suppose she could do 4 years of tae kwon do and become really arrogant and then she would be ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,621 ✭✭✭yomchi

4 years? If she came training with me I could have her arrogant in less than a month :D

Sorry OP, i'll say no more, now back to your original enquiry.

    But could she defend herself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 346 ✭✭Martin25

JKD teaches the same curriculum from beginner to advanced however it does take a while for a person to be able to do it well.
For example how to drop an attacker very quickly.
Some arts keep the curriculum at a certain pace because they want to make the most money from the students.

I'd recommend Sharon Hutchinson. She's a very well qualified womens self defence instructor and a great gal to boot with an infectiously postivie attitude. Sharon's details are as follows - www.shieldselfdefence.com

Alternatively I can pm you her number. She does a variety of courses in a range ov venues and I'm sure that there woudl be one to suit yout wife's needs.

    Best of luck.

Bruce Lee said a 85lb woman cant throw a 200lb guy so what to do;few idea's,fingers in eyes, punch to throat or simple kick to the groin then run for her life quite simple as Bruce intented

Did the class look anything like this

    http://www.break.com/index/self-defense-dorks.html

Sucessful throwing does nt have to be a fancy flip. You can unbalance someone to the point that they fall over and hit there head off the ground/wall etc.

I'd also really recommend Krav Maga.. - a weekend course followed by regular training if possible in Dublin at their club. Or she could do a 12 week course. They offer a money back guarantee and I can personally attest to the fact that this is stood by. I started training at the club after a weekend course with them and another with a different Krav instructor, but couldn't maintain regular attendance due to the distance I live from Dublin. Patrick had no qualms about returning my pre-paid fees minus the classes I did manage to attend to and showed further generosity beyond this (I won't say what cos I don't wanna lay him open to anyone who might take advantage of other people's generosity. Let's just say I was very happily surprised).

Bring a change of clothes - it gets very sweaty!

Go back and do the course again every year or so if you are not attending the club weekly would be another piece of advice I'd give.. There's also plenty of material out there in book and dvd form that you could both use to refresh her memory at home in private and to supplement the training.

I can also recommend the Karate system in Coolmine run by Tom Ward. In fact it was originally designed for women’s self defense in mind.

If she's interested in Kung Fu (Chinese Martial Arts), she could visit this website: www.taichikongfu.net. Sifu Sam Sun is teaching different classes in Castleknock area and City Center, for different levels of students.
