Well thats my baby. She's having a new engine this week along with clutch and timing belt kit.

Also I have a set of the BBS RA alloys to go on, need a refurb first though. Then I'm going to have the car machine polished to bring up the paintwork.

The only modifications I'm going to make is an uprated suspension along with uprated brake discs.

The car is totally original and only has 70,000 miles on the clock. New engine has similiar mileage too. I'll keep this thread updated as I go.

cool, what engine are you putting in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

It's a 90 spec 1.8 GTI engine. Going to be leaving the car with the K-Jet fuel injection though

She was an english one, but its been here for around 20 years, well wear!!!:D

She was an English one, owned by a lady who bought it new in London, retired to Cork with the car. I'm the third owner, last owner put it in storage for a good while (boards.ie's very own Mr.Junkyard)

Well I'm really happy with it, and it'll be on the road by this weekend all going well.

I'll be breaking a 90 spec 5dr GTI too so if anybody is looking for bits let me know

Staying with the 8v... It's plenty quick for me, it's not being built for breakneck speeds :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 rs cab

I believe the 8v is suppose to be a better engine.Great car wouldn`t mind gettin one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

TBH I have no experience of the 16v, but I do understand that they give a little more trouble than the 8v, also acceleration to 50mph or so is roughly the same so I'm told

Joking aside I'm tempted to leave them on, they are the originals from the car. I think I'll go with the BBS wheels though

Wasn't joking at all! Very fond of steel wheels on classics.
The BBS are very nice too, well suited to the car (and classics in general I'd say).

You could always shove a VR6 in it at some stage.....;):P

Car was registered here on the 9/1/90 in Cork (funnily enough!)
It was registered in the UK on 8/8/86

Hmm,so there was 296 1986 cars imported to cork between 1/1/87 to 9/1/90,maybe she thought she would get the new year registration!!!:D

I didnt get through the whole thread, but it would take some engineering to finish it,not least the twin clutches, twin throttle cables and twin gearlinkage, that would have to work perfectly in synch or one gearbox and engine would end up in bits with a missed gear!!

Very nice GTI you have there. I had a white 86 with the 8 valve engine and very similar wheels to your BBS ones. It was also an English import and had about 77,000 miles on the clock before it went walkabout one night

If your getting the paint work done Onkle, i'd reccomend you have a look at these lads
    http://www.detailer.ie/

Have a look through their forums etc. to see the work they do. And since your up there way it might be worth a try. Seem to do some smashing work.

Best of luck with the car, looks well, very jealous. As for the wheels, it's a hard choice but i'd prob go for the BBS, sure if you don't like them you can always throw the steelies back on:D

I've seen their work, looks top notch. A friend of mine works in a bodyshop and is gonna do the work on it for me though. I intend to get a full respray in the coming months

Fair enough, wouldn't be worth your while so spending so much on it. I'm guessing the fella in the body shop won't do they wheels for ya. I was shocked the last time i went to a fella i knew well in a bodyshop to ask him to do a wheel and he nearly ran a mile. Is this the case with all of them?
Have you any project plans for it after the respray?
www.vagdrivers.net should be of help to you too. I know you've plenty of parts at your avail but there is plenty more for sale there and plenty of good honest advice as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I'm set for parts, have a full car ready to be broken. I'm not going to do anything to it apart from suspension and brakes. Keeping it as original as possible, better that way. Plus Junkyard would have my guts if I defaced the car in any way :D

Actually forgot to ask the guy in the bodyshop about the wheels :o must do that tomorrow lol

Haha, that's the way to do it. Sounds good. Do keep this place posted. A few shots of the interior and before and after polish would be nice:p

Interior is mint. Had a full valet done on it when I bought it and the seats came up brand new. Drove it up from Cork and not a bother on my back, drove down to Cork in an E class on Saturday and my back was sore after it(I injured my back a while ago and long drives are a killer still)

Looks like you have your new daily driver. I have a mk 4 atm and find the seats very comfortable, and i was driving a mk5 a good few times and could never get the seat to sit right or comfortable. Now you have a good excuse to drive the Golf:D

It was about 10 years ago, and I had owned it for about three years. I got it back, but unfortunately it was too badly damaged to repair. Anyway, never mind all that, they are a great car and I hope it all goes well for you.
I have often thought about buying another one though, and might some day!

Sorry for bringing this thread OT again but I saw on some forum somewhere where someone in Croatia stuck two V6s in a Lupo! Was still a work in progress when I last saw it, though he got both the engines running at least.

I was down in the garage today. New engine is in, it was stripped, cleaned and had a new timing belt kit including water pump, new oil pump, put an alternator from a GTD onto it. Then new clutch and new flywheel too. New headgasket while it was out too and everything cleaned.

It sounded poorly though..... The problem seemed to be with the dizzy so off I went tonight part huntin' and took the dizzy from my parts car along with a few other bits. So I'll call to the garage tomorrow and see how the progress is going. Hopefully there'll be no more problems although there could be any number of things cos the lump going in is from a digigfant car and mine is a K-jet so hopefully the lads haven't missed anything

Have to say the lads working on it are fantastic. A lot of the bolts had to be drilled out (being a 22 year old UK import) and the Polish lad that works inthe place did it all, he must have the patience of a saint. Fair play to him. These lads really know their stuff and have recently fitted a Honda s2000 engine into an '84 RWD corolla!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

Things seem to be going pretty well with her, I'll get new pics up soon. The lads working on her are actually delighted to be working on it cos they're sick of the usual run of the mill stuff.

That looks a fine example Junkyard, make sure you get plenty of use out of that one. What happened to downsizing the collection?? :)

I actually bought a place in France in the end and I'm in the process of moving some of the stuff out there, I still have to complete my ultimate collection and this was on the shopping list for some time.

Well.... I called to the garage today. Turned her over and up she fired!! :DSounds fantatsic. Engine is totally rebuilt. A compression test was done and the engine might as well be brand new.

I won't be able to take it home for a few weeks cos I'm in the process of moving but when I get her home I'll take some more pics.

Delighted with the car. Any more jobs that need doing I'll do myself now

    Happy days!!:)

Indeed!! I was just short of skipping away from the garage today.

Although the car has a silly single headlight badgeless grill on it atm... But never fear I have the original!! It'll be the first thing I do when I get it back :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭DaveCol

Well I dropped up again tonight to sort out my bill. The car was outside so I was able to take it for a spin. So good to be behind the wheel of her. The engine is sweet and it pulled very well. Clutch is nice and light now too.

Next thing now is tyres and brakes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

........ The garage where the car is at the moment have to put all of the cars outside during opening hours and then put them back in every evening. The young lad that moves them in and out lost my key today, my only key after moving it out today.

The mechanic rang me asking if I had a spare which I don't so I had to give him the go ahead to snap my ignition. Grrr all the locks and ignition will have to be changed from my parts car. And I'd already agreed to sell them to somebody.
