In the following article Ivey pushes all-in blind in the first level/first hand of a $10,000 WPT event with 4 - 3 off suit.

And gets called by a person with KK. Ivey loses.

Ivey wanted a double up so he could leave the event and get blinded off so he doesnt have to play day 1 because he is busy.

To me that a disgrace. What if you won a sit into that event or used a large percentage of the bankroll to play in it . And some clown tries what Ivey did.

    What do you think.

It his money, he can do what he wants with it. If the buyin is too much for your roll you shouldn't be there. Else, its a great situation where you have a great chance to double up.

If you know Ivey is pushing in blind here and you are sitting in the big blind. What is your minimum requirement to make the call?

Considering we are starting with 30000 chips and 90 minute blinds

    I'd be calling with

    -The Rockets
    -The Hooks
    - The Ladies
    - The Dead Mans Hand

Basically any hand that has a name

10 bonus points to anyone who can tell me why it's called the dead man's hand.

Because Wild bill hickok got shot holding Two pair Aces and eights. Technically being dealt A 8 isn't the dead mans hand unless you hit your two pair, although Jesse May would probably say otherwise.

Most people that replied said they would call with the dead mans hand and other mad hands.

    WHAT ?????

Even if he told you that he was going all-in blind you would not call.
Would you risk your whole tournament on a complete gamble ?

And if you say YES. Ask yourself this would you gamble 10,000 on a black jack hand ?

    It the same situation.

Dont reply saying "ill gamble with **** hand" because u know you wouldn't. Unless you had kk or aa

Its a mad play by Phil simple as that .

Of course i would - the average hand is Q7 off so there is a 50% chance he has worse than this - thus if i had say the top 25% of hands you really should call eg KQ, KJ, any Ace, any pair over 9's (im obv not calling with 22, 33) - to fold would be ridic when the odds are massively in your favour

Also would you call if you knew he had 34off and you had KQoff - damn right i would

Maybe 2 points if they knew why he shot him.

Your right, blackjack and poker are the same.
Its just cards and chips. The fact that the house has a huge edge in one and you have a huge edge over Phil Ivey (only situation this will happen) has no bearing

It doesn't matter what type of buyin it is.... Against 34, a8 or q8 is only a 60/40 favourite.... why put all your chips on the line for those odds in the first hand of a tournament with so much play in it? How could anyone know he is pushing with 34? He could have q9 or a10 just as easy and then you'd be screwed

a8 is a snap fist pump call

It would have been golden if someone did have the fabled 'dead man's hand' or 'A8'.

    I can picture it now...

"CALL, A8, YOU'RE A DEAD MAN IVEY, A DEAD ****ING MAN!!!"

    *Fist pump*

Fittingly, Ivey probably would have dropped dead with a combination of fear, shock and respect.

Its not scared money... its just the smart play... i can't believe that so called respected players on here advocate a call with a marginal hand such as a8 or even a useless hand like q8... With 200 or 300 bbs in the first few levels, hour long clock etc, i think i know what i'd do with my money regardless of whether is €20 or €10000. No way am i taking a flip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

a8 isn't a marginal hand when there's someone open shoving every hand blind.
