Can anyone recommend any real 'scary' movie? ****, anything with an 18's rating will do!:D

But seriously, the last movies i saw that would even come close to this was House of 1000 Corpses/The Devils Rejects.

Is there anything of late i should make sure to watch?

well rob zombie directed those films and he made the recent halloween film too. So you could check that out but you'd be likely to be disappointed as it is more mainstream and bland than the other two.

wolf creek is the only movie thing that springs to mind.

Event Horizion is one of the few films eve which truly creeped me out when I first saw it.

Dead Man's Shoes, The Killing, The Devil's Backbone, Gone, Cronos and Pan;s Labyrinth would be some of my favourite genre films of the past few years.

I really can't understand all the love for this film, I thought it was very bland and not scary in the least.

Try The Eye, Japanese version not the remake.

    Agreed on both counts.

'[Rec]' is being given serious plaudits, bought it myself on the strength of reviews here. Haven't sat down and watched it yet though.

I liked Sunshine too. Not an outright horror, but does have that unsettling feel. I have to admit I was fairly scared myself towards the end!

I really liked 28 weeks later come to think of it. Pretty sure others will disagree with that choice though :)
no country for old men is a superb film. Not a horror though - but a very strong thriller.

    lol!

    Seriously though. :)

Audition, Funny Games, Borderland, Haute Tension, Visions Of Suffering, Ichi The Killer, Storm Warning (a bit like Wolf Creek) to name a few!

Not forgetting the grand-daddy of gore films - Braindead!

Good call. 'Inland Empire' aswell if you're looking for something more recent by the great man. Highly dark and unsettling stuff this. Brilliant!

The Orphanage is the most recent one that stands out for me

Its movies like these that scare the bee-jeesus out of me more then the horror, spooky or jumpy motion pictures.

There're the type of movies that make you want to switch seats...

[REC] as already mentioned. The Orphanage is very good (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/) But if you really want to scare the bejesus out of yourself I'd check this one.......http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095655/

Why anything with an 18's rating? That's not exactly discerning criteria, is it? Bloodrayne has an 18's rating, maybe you should give that a try? :)

Seriously though, a lot of great and very scary films have been rated 15. Without a doubt, one of the scariest films I've seen in recent years was A Tale of Two Sisters, which was a 15 cert, and absolutely chilling as they come.

Nothing against the 18 cert, but you probably should broaden your horizons a bit, because you might be missing out on something terrific otherwise.

hmmmm these might be a bit old for you. Anyway I am going to start off two classics from John Carpenter.

    The Prince Of Darkness
haven't seen it in years and might be a bit dated

    The Thing
pure class and the effects still hold up against any CGI of today

    The Woman In Black
A TV movie from the late 80ies but a good old fashioned ghost story (maybe hard to track down)

    The Changeling
One of the greatest horrors of all time

    Touche...

I only mentioned the 18's part to highlight the fact that very few seem to be made anymore, at least compared to 20 years ago. Studios seem to want to sacrifice certain elements of an 18's to appeal to a wider/younger audience.

I'd go for more classic movies. Like The Shining. Scared the crap outta me!!!

Someone said Dead Man's Shoes, thats a brilliant one too.
Amazing performance by Paddy Considine. :D

Actually one that really scared me was the original "The Haunting" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057129/ note the crappy cgi'd remake, this is in black and white directed by Robert Wise who followed this up with the Sound of Music would u believe, well worth checking out u can catch it on TNT every now and again. No sign of an 18 rating on that one ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Very old but Hitchcock's 'Birds' will do it for you. I think the original Candyman is good and last but certainly not least The Exorcist. That is the scariest movie of all time for me.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,043 ✭✭✭me_right_one

Watch "the exorcism of emily rose". Have some spare undies ready. Its a true story, wikipedia it or youtube it. You can hear the young one talking in her demonic voice.

Also hellraiser and hellraiser2, the blair witch project, and you have to watch sleepwalkers

    "Let the Right One In."

The most recent thrilling horror I've seen was 'The Mist', but next time I watch it I'm leaving the room before the end!:(Can't bear to put myself through it again! I'd recommend '30 days of Night' and
'The Grudge' and I also loved the 'Jeepers Creepers' movies too.

The Mist - really??? - I thought it was the most dreradful sh*te id seen in years. Id leave the room before the start not the end. (horses for courses though)

Proper suspenseful Horror movies are few and far between these days, a few diamonds among the rough are

1: The Orphanage - Dir. Guillermo Del Toro
2: The descent -Dir. Neil Marshall

Agree with those above who say Dead Mans Shoes - brilliant but disturbing film, with a real tour de force from considine, but its not really a horror more 'Count of Monty Cristo' than 'Rosemary's Baby'.

More recently 'Let the Right One In' (Swedish vampire movie) is also a class act but again not really scary

The thing is though, I read about the hugely disturbing ending before i watched so I didn't know what to expect. I was peeping through my fingers the whole way through it! I don't know if I'd have been so tense if I hadn't been preparing myself for something awful, know what I mean?
'The Descent' was well scary I agree:eek:. 'Creep' wasn't bad either.

Yeah i get ya, the anticipation might have built the tension up for you. I really couldnt understand all the good reviews it got though - im generally not a horror man anyway- too desensitized watching Freddy/jason movies with elder siblings as a nipperis

By the way if you want a good thriller/ revenge flick, have a look for a Korean film called OLD BOY - one of my fav's

    As mentioned previously,
High Tension (Haute Tension or Switchblade Romance) is great, the subbed not dubbed version.
    Old Boy is excellent.

Of course the subbed version - dubbing only good for comedy value in old martial arts flicks.

I'd also suggest a few more obvious ones I didnt see mentioned: 'No Country For Old Men' should be on the list, also Cape Fear (either version), Duel , The Game ( the one film i can suspend my dislike of Michael Douglas for), Usual Suspects, the conversation, Misery, Carrie, North by Northwest, Jaws (dont know if that was mentioned), Is Leon Haute Tension?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭Ann22

I thought the Final Destination films were great. 'Jaws' yeah what a classic, I'd watch it over and over, I could watch An American Werewolf In London again and again and really enjoy it each time too.

Is there anything to be said for the exorcism of emily rose? Did anyone here ever see it? I'm just dying to know if I was the only one who genuinely got the heebee-jeebies from it

Pure muck but the kills were pretty inventive(pt 2 especially, log through sheriffs wind screen, actual gore not CGI)Noice.

    The Strangers.

90 odd minutes of suspense, I was terrified throughout.

I thought the strangers was crap.
Rosemary's baby. Chinatown. Chinatown is not a horror it is film noir but it has a horrific feel to it imo.

Have to say, I'm a huge horror film buff, but i've yet to find a film in recent years that's genuinely scared me.
When i was 8 or 9 i hd a habit of staying up late during the summer just to watch classic horror films. have to say the only ones that had any sort of impact on me psychologically were "Halloween" and "Poltergeist"
    why?
because they were targeted at the suburbs (not some delapodated house in the middle of the forest and/or desert) and the main victims were children.
I watch these films not and i look upon them with admiration more so because they've been the only one that cuased a lingering fear for months after watching.

SO, it can be said i've been easily desencitised to these films
although i think it you want a irking experience i'd say try
    Jacobs Ladder
somebody mentioned thses films earlier and i have to agree
sheerly for spectacle value i'd watch Hellraiser 1 and 2 and The prince of Darkness they just dont make them like this anymore!

I've also seen Event Horizon and Sunshine were mentioned
Similar films but I'd pick them because the "alone in space" genre is chilling if you really think about it.

    Most Importantly
To really get the full experience of a horror film i'd advise you go old school and watch them in the right conditions
Turn off all the lights and wait til everyone is in bed. haha ;)

I did this with Darkness Falls, its a poor film but it made it more interesting.

I would agree with that. You could ruin a film by not watching in the right atmosphere. I saw 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' after a few glasses of wine so i wasn't in the least bit scared:o, if she'd been on the sofa beside me, I probably wouldn't have been worried either:D. I've heard a few people saying they found it mad scary so I think I may have spoiled it for myself:(.
'Halloween' has to be the best slasher horror film ever made.. I saw it first when I was 11 and was so scared..I still enjoy it, the music is class. I saw the start of the remake and switched off. They seemed to portray young Myers as a disturbed little boy who you felt pity for, not the creature described by Dr Loomis in the original, the boy with evil in his eyes that he tried to reach for the first few years and the last few, he spent trying to keep locked up.

See, as much as i like the first one, i think the remake is a decent film. It portrayed a more realistic psychological approach to it, and summed the story up in one film...
unlike the poxy sequals where you find out he's possessed by a druid thingy... serious, what the hell was that?

Seen The Ring when it first came out. Couldn't look at my telly for weeks!!:o
Kinda lost its scariness as I got older though.
Anyone mentioned Nightmare on Elm Street?
P.S. If anyone has The Horror Channel, watch some of those films. Scary, yet bloody hilarious!!
